I will be driving from ct and someone suggested getting the ez pass for the tolls in new york and new jersey. For those who use ez pass, do the tolls have a gate that goes up after it reads the pass. I just want to know if there is a way to know if the pass is being read.

I believe you can get as far south as DC using your EZ Pass all the way (and now up into Maine, with NH being an annoying outlier at the moment). I am pretty sure there are no gates on the EZ Pass lanes, and that you simply drive on thru at 10-15 mph, a light flashes that toll has been paid and then you drive on. I cannot remember anyplace with gates along the way south. YMMV

It's a pity that it's a whole new transponder system in Florida (SunPass), as I'd love to bring my EZ Pass with us on vacation there.

Hi fellow CT diser ...I have an EZ pass that I got for my trip last year and I used it all the way down to Maryland and DC. Most places have what look like traffic lights with Red and Green and as long as it says green your good, but even if it turns red you keep going and they send you a notice as they don't want you stopping at all at the booths. I got my EZ pass from NJ as they gave me the transponder for free. I put $50 on it and I had almost $20 left after the round trip. I think this made the drive easier at least for us.

Any questions feel free to keep asking!

Agreed, use EZPass all the way to VA, after that there aren't any tolls anyhow until you get to FL. If you're only going to WDW and never leaving teh property, you won't have any tolls in FL, otherwise there are waht five now(?) toll roads around the greater Orlando area that all accept SunPass.

The only place with gates accepting ez-pass is on the Tobin Bridge in Boston. Everywhere else it's an open lane at anywhere from 5 to 55 MPH depending on the lane you're in.

EZ pass will definitely save you time. I live in NJ and drive to northern VA several times a year to visit DGDs. Not having to come to a complete stop thru all those tolls lines on Rt95 is wonderful! You'll still have to have change for the tolls in FL as they don't have EZ pass in that state.

Thanks for the tip:)

Just opened a $25.00 account for our drive to WDW next month.

We'll be driving during Easter break, so if it will save us time, it'll be well worth it!

Thanks for the info. I just wanted to know if there was a way to know if it read so knowing that there is a light gives me some relief.
