Ok, I was all set to drive thru Indianapolis on 65 from Chicago area, but now I'm reading more posts and everyone says to go thru IL on 57. I'm confused now! Which is really faster. We'll have 2 DDs aged 4 and 1.5, leaving at 3am, not sure how far we're driving yet, either straight thru or as far as DDs make it. We're not going on a busy workday, so hopefully traffic won't be too bad. Which should we do and why?

well, we live just off of I-74 & I-57, and we drive over to Indy and take 65 down to 24. Its faster than taking 57.
For the time factor, the speed limit in Indiana has been raised to 70 and the speed limit in Illinois is still 65.

You are far enough south to miss out on the worst part of the journey. Just getting to I-65. we live just off of I-57 and I-80 and always take I-57 down to I-24 and cut across. At times it may take several hours to get through thesouthern suburbs and Gary to get on 65. 57 to 24 adds about 50 miles but we still feel that it is a little quicker and I would rather be driving at speed than sit in traffic.

I too live just off of I-80 and 57, and would most definately choose that route. Most times you'll run into construction on 65. The time that I did drive 57, it took 4 adults driving straight through 18 hours with two meal stops.

Assuming you live west or north of Chicago, I65 is about 30 miles shorter. We used to go that way but now take I57 to avoid traffic congestion. It is a little farther, but I believe takes less time.

We are right by the I-80/I-57 interchange, and I'd toss in a BIG vote for 57. Even if the mileage is shorter, the traffic was virtually non-existent.

Count me as another vote for I57, MUCH less traffic.
