Our trip South last March, we spent the first night in Buffalo, and the second night in Charlotte, NC, arriving around 8:30. This time, we're spending the first night in Erie, and the second in SC, just past joining the I-95, but that's going to be a push from PA. We probably won't get there until 10 at night, even leaving at 7am.
By the way, big thumbs down for the Days Inn in Charlotte, we found it dingy, dirty and cold. And we had a major problem checking out, which was partly their fault, partly ours for getting a "rate" from one of those discount places that advertises on Tripadvisor. DS is still Days Inn phobic...
As far as our route, we went I-90, I-79, I-77, I-26, I-95. At the time, CAA was doing a travel advisory recommending avoiding route 19 through Summersville, because of rampant tourist ticketing, so we just stayed on the interstates. It was beautiful going through the mountains, and on the way back we discovered a little treasure - the Sleep Inn just north of Charleston, WV. It has a family restaurant attached with great home-style cooking, and sweet potato fries.
Kungaloosh!
