driving for march break

Hello Disney fans,
Anyone driving from
Hamilton/Oakville area for march break? if so what route are you taking Buffalo or Detroit?
We normally go thru Buffalo and then catch the 75 near Cincanatti just wondering if we are going the long way

Just came back last Sat. for two weeks down FL, I took the I-79 and I-77,
the drive was very nice, but the road is very windy, i can see why Winter driving might not be a good Idea for this route, but if snow is not in the forecast during the drive, you will have no problem.
I left From Toronto on Friday Feb 13th 5:00am arrived in Orlando Sat. 8:00 pm stop over at Colombia SC.
I actually took off my winter tires and put on my summer tires before the trip,
turn out to be the right decission. after Pitts PA temp. was near 10C and rising to 24C by the time I get to Orlando. My Hakka would have melted and the winding road in VA, West VA, and NC would have slow me down quite a bit with winter tires.
I would love to drive this route during the fall, i can imagine how beautiful it will be.

We're driving next week - going through Buffalo, down I79,to I77/95.

It's about three hours faster than going i-75.

We live in Sarnia so we usually take 75 for March break. I think 77 is a much nicer drive, it was beautiful one year we went in May. We came up 77/79 with our trailer one year and we found it more "hillier" than 75. Also , we saw a lot of speed traps, but thankfully not an issue when pulling our trailer. From our starting point I find 75 faster. Anyone going through Detroit this year though take note of the detour at the bridge. You will need to take 94 to 275 or there is one other detour but just make sure you check it out, because you don't want to get lost in that part of town!

That is a lot faster, WOW! Last time we went we took the Detroit route as per our GPS. I def think we will try the Buffalo route this coming September.

Leaving in a week and a half, and we always do the 79/77/26/95 - takes 20-21 hours to get to WDW. We usually stay in Charlotte, NC or Columbia SC on the way down and on the way home. This trip we're stopping in Bristol, TN for three nights first (Nascar race! ), so we'll be driving 9 hours the first leg, then do the next 11 hours from there. Beautiful drive, especially if it's not snowing since you go through the mountains. Enjoy!

From what i have read it seems silly of us to go thru Buffalo and then reroute to the 75 highway. What do you think? From all the replies it looks like no-one else does that. Pls help ! my husband thinks its better to go thru Buffalo and get the 75 around cincinatti i dont want to be driving any more than i need to

Going through Buffalo to then head over I-75 is not the most direct route to WDW. Unless there is something you folks want to see over that way.

We have driven the PA/WV/VA/NC/SC/GA/FL route two yrs in a row. In February. We always check weather,and have the other route as a back up, but we have been blessed wiht good weather (save around Erie this yr for an hour or so on the way down). We hammer away to Savannah (18 hrs first yr and 16 this yr). We stop only for gas, and everyone has a "pee" break, like it or not with gas stops. I pack a lunch and we stop at a Cracker Barrel (usually in NC) for dinner. We book Hampton Inns in NC, SC and Savannah and cancel before 6 once we know we are good to go further.

Coming home, we leave Fort Myers at 7 and stop around 9 or 10 just inside Virginia. Don't want to navigate those mnts at night!

I always hope for good weather. The other route is longer (we are in the Burlington area) and I have heard not as scenic. Also the drive to Detroit is the most booooring ever! Could be why OP's DH want to go through Cinci!

I will be driving I-79/I-77 tomorow. Anybody can tell me where mountains start? Are we talking Morganstown WV, or it is much more South in Virginia?

South of Pittsburgh on I-79 there's a very steep part. Hilly/mountians the rest of PA, WV,& Virginia. Once in NC your pretty well done with the hills.

A you head south on I-77 in southern VA there's an incredible view to the east around Fancy Gap, VA. Driving through, WV on US-19 is beautiful.

I asked my question as Google Earch show rapid elevation growth just in VA, yet in different forums I read that drive in I-79 from Morganstown south is called "Death valley" or something. Thanks for the tip on Fancy Gap - I'll try to stop there for a few min.

Should I just go down I-75, and take a few more hours but have peace of mind that I won't die prior to meeting the mouse?

Well to get to I-75 you need to head down the 401 and drive though "carnage alley".

Driven I-79/US-19/I-77 dozens of times drive through many different types of weather, no issues. Drive to road conditions, stay alert and know your route. Bad weather can happen on any road. Much less traffic on I-79/US-19/I-77 than I-95 or I-75.
