Does any one know if they are repaveing the Grapevine this week? And how much road work is on the 5 at this time? We are heading down Wed. And hope to avoid too much construction.

I went down a couple of weeks ago and the Buttonwillow part wasn't too bad. Going down was a shorter 1 lane part than coming back up. The coming back part was about 3 1/2 miles.

We drove the I-5 by Buttonwillow and it was bad going down to So. Cal. It took us 1.5 hours to get through it. On the way back up we took the 43 to 58 rote to avoid the gridlock.
We traveled that area of the I-5 two Fridays in a row at 4 p.m. So it could have just been bad timing on our part. If you have a smart phone, check your GPS before you hit Bakersfield area and see if the traffic in the area is in the red avoid that area at all costs.

Today the signs are flashing about the road construction at Frazier Park.. Southbound. There is no way to tell when the traffic there is going to be bad and how long the wait might be but to play it safe I would get gasoline and use the restroom before I started over the Grapevine... and remember the rest area up there is closed!

Thanks Everyone we leave tomorrow morning at around 8:30am  we usually try to leave earlier but my daughter has to pick up a book at school and that's in the opposite direction:confused3. The bookstore opens at 8 am and we will leave as soon as she gets back.

We did this trip 2 weeks ago, left the bay area around 6am. We hit a bit of traffic on 5 south going down but wasn't too bad. Maybe added 15 minutes to our trip. Coming back though we left much later as I slept in till about 830 and being a much longer stretch, it was pretty much at a dead stop for parts of it. Added about 30-45 minutes to the trip. All in all, not the worst. I used to commute across the San Mateo bridge before they widened it so I got quite used to stop and go traffic and taking an hour to drive 15 miles.

drove from SJ to San Diego on Sunday 6/24....sailed right thru.
single lane just south of 58 (buttonwillow) for about 3-4 miles.
Grapevine was clear no construction.
Drove back to SJ on 6/25 ...good until you get just north of Anaheim...around Norwalk...old stretch of I5 with less lanes...stop and go for most of the way thru LA from there...just past the old Firestone plant.
Then smooth sailing the rest of the way home. Single lane same area going north just before 58.
We left SJ at 5am on Sunday with no traffic or slow downs at all.
Monday we left at 6:30 Am an got into LA during commute time...other than that no real problems either direction.
