Hello,
We are planning a trip to Disney for next Dec. 2007. Has anyone ever driven from New York State? If so, what route did you take, how long did it take you, did you stay over night on the way or drive straight thru (WHEW!), and any other relevent info would be greatly appreciated! We are traveling with 2, possibly 3 teens and one small dog....towing our RV. If anyone has ever stayed at the Kissimmee KOA, please offer your opinions and info on that campground as well! Thanks so much! :cool1:

Hi,
You did not say what part of NY you are leaving from. It is a big state.
I just moved down here, drove from near Hartford CT to Orlando. I took I95 all the way to I4. With a few stops here and there and with rain slowing us down to about 40mph in the last part of GA and all the way to Orlando it took approx. 21 hours. We drove straight through.
I do not camp, so, I cannot help you with campgrounds.

Oh....sorry! Good point...we would be coming from the Rochester, NY area. Thank you! :bounce:

I drove down from Cortland in 2005. We took 81 to Staunton, VA where we picked up 64 and followed that to 95 near Richmond. On our return trip, I stayed on 95 until route 17 and took that up near the WV border and picked up 81 there. The first route was pretty (mountain views) but felt rather desolate; the return route went through a few towns which some might feel would slow them down, but I preferred the break in endless highway.

BTW, we took 3 days to go down, stopping at Gettysburg. I drove back in one shot, leaving at 6:30 am and arriving back in Cortland at 12:30 am.

Boy, that's one long drive from up-state! Have a safe trip when you go.

81 and 64 are beautiful areas (and peaceful). My BIL and his family live in Staunton and Waynesboro. We try to leave at 4:30 am to get to Staunton by 1 or so.

MickeyMonstersMom: Which way is faster: 81-66-17-95 or 81-64-288-95? Thanks!

I'm not sure. Since we took 3 leisurely days to go down and then zoomed back, I can't make an accurate comparison. If it helps, 17 "felt" faster. The mountain scenery on 64 gets somewhat monotonous after a while and may have just felt longer than it really was.

Thanks! We have never done 81-64-288-95, but have heard it does take longer. We have done 81-77-26-95 which is beautiful, but over an hour longer than 81-66-17-95. Guess we'll stick with 66-17.

We usually leave Maine at midnight and drive to South Carolina, 16 hours. The 2nd day is a breeze at only 7 hours. On the way back, we do 13 hours the 1st day and 10 the 2nd. We won't fly after a terrifying flight in 2002 :scared1:

We are planning on doing the same thing. We'll be towing our travel trailer in August of 2007. I'll let you know how it goes. I have heard comments from others that they would not do 95 with a trailer, but I have no personal experience on nit. I believe DH is planning on doing the mountains (79??)instead.

I'm not so sure that I'd do 81 with a trailer. The mountains take a toll on gas mileage and speed.

I have done 95 with a trailer and not had a problem. In fact, I would rather do 95 than 81 any time. While 81 is a beautiful ride, It seems just sooo long.

There are at least 5 major routes from 81 to Disney. the shortest is I83 to Baltimore, but its only the fastest at 3 AM. next is 70 to DC, then US 17, then I 64 to Richmond and finally I77 to I 20. All are pretty close in milage and mostly depends on traffic and weather. I prefer US 17, but it is non interstate driving ( though mostly 4 lane anymore). I would watch 77 in the winter , it always seems to get shut down for a couple days due to snow,But i tend to get off the roads any time it snows below PA. because theres always a 100 car wreck just up the road. Also keep in mind I 295 around Richmond and Jacksonville, gnerally faster at rush hour. I've done most of these with a 26 ft travel trailer and I agree on the hills, and also to avoid the cities.
