I posted this on the cruise board, too.

We are going to Alaska in 2011 on DCL with some friends.

The husbands want to drive to the port and on the way home stop at Glacier, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, etc.

Is this crazy?

I think that the kids will fight and DH crabby. The kids will be 13 and 10.
I thought 3 -4 days there. On the way home we would take our time.

I've done the drive from Seattle to Toronto several times on the I-90 (including by myself this past summer with a German Shepherd in the back!) and it is very doable in 4 days. I tried it in 3 days when I was by myself but it took me FOREVER to get through Chicago, so I had to stop in Michigan City and do the rest of the drive to Toronto the next day.

On the way back (with DH this time!) we did Toronto to Toledo OH (leaving after lunch), Toledo to Sioux Falls SD, Sioux Falls to Billings MT, and Billings MT to Seattle. It would then be another 2-3 hours to Vancouver. It's tough to plan the route for 4 full days, just based on where the places to stop are - there is a lot of emptiness along the I-90, particularly in the western states. This route would pass close to Mt Rushmore and Yellowstone NP. We weren't stopping anywhere along the way, and were driving 12-14 hours a day (except for our half days). If you're comfortable spending that much time in a car, then it's a doable trip. We chose to do it because we couldn't travel with our large dog at the time of year that we were traveling.

I wouldn't say it's crazy, but it's not a particularly comfortable trip. Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota are pretty boring along the interstate (no offense to those who live there!) and it is a long way.
