I wasn't sure where to post this, but I am just looking for opinions. I realize at this point it is all speculation, but I have to make a decision. Our current plan is to leave Richmond friday night around 7pm and drive straight through to disney while the kids sleep (2 adult drivers sharing drive time). Now I am getting concerned about rain and wind conditions due to Irene and am wondering if it would be a better drive if we left on thursday night instead?? Opinions??

Well, since you are asking for opinions:
Based on present track and timing, IMHO, leaving Thursday night would be a better option. It seems like the storm is staying East until it hits NC, so you should be able to slide past the worst of it.

A few years back, we drove down while that storm freakishly parked itself off the Daytona Coast for several days. We waivered about when to leave, but in the end, we drove right through it. It's not an impossible drive, but definitely more stressful with the wind and rain than driving through thunderstorms.

Thanks for your reply. This is what I am thinking also. Can't get DH to give an opinion so it is stressing me out!

We were in the reverse situation a few years back. We were in Disney and a hurricane was coming and we decided to leave a day early to try to get past SC before it was due to hit shore. I don't know if we made the right decision, but even though we were not in the center of the storm, it was still very rainy/windy - really terrible driving especially at night and with the tractor trailers blowing all over the road. Probably my worst driving experience ever. I don't mean to scare you, just want you to be prepared. I would leave as early as you can to try to be past it before it gets close. Good luck!

Thanks! That is exactly what I am afraid of!!! Thursday night is the earliest we can leave, I wish we could leave during the day but that is not possible. Glad you all made it safely! How scary!
