Driving and looking for a "new" experience....

OK I know someone on the boards can help us. We're looking at driving down the 1st week of March from Canada via I95.to I84 and down I81 .We've done this route many times and know most of the pitfalls, however this time we'd like to try something different, maybe a few less days at WDW and sidetracking into NYC for 3 days, taking in some of the sites and a play OR going into DC and doing the some of the Smithsonian. My question is where to stay and how much to expect to spend for a decent hotel and any advice on whats a must see in either area AND possibly a not to be missed place to eat?
