Driving 6000 Miles for the Magic: A Miracle Trip

But our two days of Epcot seemed to have less magic. Epcot was our favorite park in previous trips. But Epcot, you're disappointing me. Will you redeem yourself?
I'm voting yes, it took me 3 days to find the Epcot magic, and I have a feeling your 3rd day you did too.

I'm glad your family helped out the family at American Adventure, and how in the world, can you remember all the words to the song. When we were there, I remember having to go to the bathroom so bad and my dh told me I could wait:lmao: The only thing I could do was cringe at each passing scene of history and knew the ending was in sight. I really need to give the AA another try.

An older man in a scooter started up a conversation with us. He had nothing but praise for Disney. He had purchased 2 AP passes years ago for him and his wife. She was dying. She died that year. Between all her treatments and not feeling well, they only used the pass twice. One of the times they went they saw Illuminations. They loved it.

He went to renew his AP pass the year after her death. The CM asked why the pass had only been used twice. He told his story to the CM…who then proceeded to renew his pass for free.:goodvibes :thumbsup2

Ever since then, he has purchased an AP pass every year.

What a heartwarming story! It makes episodes you witnessed from cranky families all worth it. :cloud9:

I used to work at EPCOT for a college internship. I played trombone throughout the park and most often performed on the stage right across from the American Pavillion. It was the best experience of my life.
These days the Japan Pavillion is my favorite. I love to go to the shops and restaurants and shock the CMs by speaking Japanese.

Chritamae--I'm looking forward to hearing what happened next. :)

I am soooo glad that you are feeling better!

We didn't get to do any of the shows in Epcot on our trip this past week! Maybe when the kiddos are older they will enjoy these! For now...it was a passport around the world! They loved it!

Can't wait to hear about your MGM perfect day! It was just tooooo hot last week!

Thank you to all who are reading, and especially those posting :)

jlcd: Thanks...Lots more journey left, especially the drive back.

nyyankeegirl: Thanks. The drive was kinda crazy. We look back and say, "I can't believe we did that... we actually did that?!"

SueM in MN: Thank you.
I am going to put a link to your report in the disABILITIES FAQs thread on the disABILITIES Board. That way it will always be available and more people may find it.
Wow! :goodvibes Thanks! I hope this report helps others...

tokyodisneydad: Thanks. It's great to see fellow pin traders on board. Since you live in Japan, the crowds will probably be no big deal to you.

KathyRN137: :wave2: All the frustrating experiences faded behind the magic. I like helping people-wish I could do more. There are places that I would love to volunteer and I would love to go t college-but I need a nurse...Know any nurses in California??? ;)

disneymoon 0307: Well, Epcot definitely isn't Universal  But there were a lot of unmagical things...still I am loyal to Disney!

burly: :wave2: Thanks...Epcot has time to redeem. We did have fun-just seemed to be mixed with unfun ;)

Kimberley815: My parents bought a tape of Voices of Liberty on one of our first trips. Great group. When I was younger I especially enjoyed Turkey in the straw...I love feeling patriotic!

LITTLEKID58: Thanks for joining...Now what is
 :)

Tanya90210: Thank you:goodvibes

DisneyJo: Thanks...The bathroom and handicap stalls kinda confuses me, too...I like to think that sometimes people just don't know...

whogirl'smom: Thank you. I like to spread the magic :wizard: Just think what the world would be like if everyone passed on kindness and thought of others...One of the reasons I love Disney is because it strives to be that Utopia.

eyeheartgoofy: Thank you. That America song makes me teary eyed...

Lan: Thank you :goodvibes

OhMari:
in the world, can you remember all the words to the song
I googled a phrase I remembered with the query Golden Dreams American Adventure Epcot Disney World. :) I totally understand the bladder interfering with enjoyment...Give it another go...

Eventer98: I love learning how Disney helps :)

tokyodisneydad: I think it would be fun to work at Disney. My friend Cam has been to a lot of countries. She was really impressed with the attention to details and authenticity of each country.

Goofyluver: Thank you. We always watched some shows. I believe on my first trip, my Dad was a character in England's street show...he had to die a dramatic death :rotfl: Epcot can be fun for kids...I am glad yours enjoyed it.

ellindea: Thanks for the bump.

Thank you to everyone

Hooray! Does this mean you're going to post another chapter today??

(Oh, and I think TFS means, "Thanks For Sharing". :)

I was excited about MGM. Almost all the attractions are wheelchair accessible so we could do a lot. We got to the park a little later then I wanted-I believe between 11:00/12:00. I noticed that the longer we were on vacation, the longer it took us to get going. One thing we always did was eat on the way in the car to save money and time.

A tip I got from the disboards bathroom thread was that the bathrooms outside the park entrance were always practically empty. No one was in the bathroom! And the wheelchair stall was huge! About the size of a Companion bathroom-complete with sink. It gets Christamae’s seal of approval.

After our obligatory first attraction we entered the park. The older gentleman who passed us through the turnstiles stopped us to give us congratulations pins. Maybe he thought we deserved it just for being there. We are quite a sight. I figured driving 6000 miles was quite a feat and he told us to wear them…so I put one on.

First we headed to Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. We all love this show. The CMs at the entrance told us to be back 30 minutes before the next show.

Now I know the next attraction gets a lot of bad rap…but we love it!

Sounds Dangerous, baby.

A show that sends tingles down your spine and puts you in the action. Who can deny that your heart rate accelerates when the bees escape? Or checking the length of your hair in the barbershop scene?

A word of warning: this is NOT for children. There were several groups with small kids and the CM repeated no less than 6 times that the show had intense scary scenes in complete darkness and may not be appropriate for some guests. Within 5 minutes of the show, several guests left…

But not I! I like a little thrill.

And then a new chapter in my life and legacy born…I purchased a beginning lanyard set and became a pin trader. I also bought this pin:

pin47179

After dutifully and proudly putting on said lanyard, we were off to Indiana Jones. A family favorite. On our last trip (before my trach, vent, feeding tube), Dad was chosen to be an extra. This showing would have even better memories.

The CM asked us if we wanted to sit up front…Up front-there are wheelchair seats up front? For shame that I –master planner and disser-didn’t already know this.

We excitedly accepted. A new perspective. And especially nice for Grandma since she is blind in one eye and greatly impaired by wet macular degeneration in the other.

On the way to our seats, we chatted with the friendly CM asking how things were. “Things have been crazy…in one word-Brazil. These huge tour groups come in at different times in smaller groups-and then want us to put them all together in the best seats and make other guests move. And two weeks ago, a group from Argentina was here and I guess Argentina and Brazil have some bad blood because there were several fights between them…But so far, today has been pretty good…Have you guys seen the show before? (Yep, every trip-one of our favorites)…Have you ever met Indy? (…No…) Well, stay in your seats after the show and I’ll make sure you meet him and he might have something for you…

Cool!!

The show was very good with great special effects, stunts, and some humor thrown in. Sitting up front definitely increased the ability to see details like expressions and movement. And I could feel the heat from the explosions.

Some pictures of the show:

100_0175-2.jpg

First we met the ‘bad guy’ from the show.

100_0179-2.jpg

The guy was really funny and friendly.

100_0180A.jpg

Dad asked some technical questions. Like, did you know that the show has the largest moving set in the world? And it weighs…a lot. I can’t remember the exact number.

Then Indiana Jones himself.

100_0181-2.jpg

He was very nice. He has worked for Disney doing this show on and off for 16 years. He really enjoys working for Disney, “Disney takes good care of its entertainers.” And we were presented with Indiana Jones hats!

Danielle perched her hat on her head and the ‘bad guy’ said teasingly,
“You know I usually beat up people that wear that hat.”

After a little more visiting, Indiana excused himself to take a shower and prepare for the next show. We were off to Backlot Restaurant to eat.

I like all the props and exploring the room helped ease my impatience while waiting for everyone to eat. The bathroom was okay. I barely fit inside the stall-but I fit. The one complaint I had about MGM was that the Companion Bathrooms were hard to find and very few and far between.

With bellies full and bladders empty, we were off to Muppet Vision 3D. This is one of Dad’s favorites. All of us enjoy the quirky humor and wit. I had forgotten some parts like when the character comes on stage looking for Bean…A cute, fun show

Time to cool off and have fun under the sea with Voyage of the Little Mermaid.

100_0184-2.jpg

This show is a great place to cool off. I love the underwater special effect! My only wish is that it was longer. The movie scenes make it seem a bit disjointed.

We sped ourselves over to Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show. This show was new for us. Dad was pretty excited. The wheelchair seating was really good. There are actually three different levels-very front, middle, back. We were in the middle section. A nice CM from France took us up the elevator to the wheelchair seating in the middle. This was where I wanted to sit. Nice fans helped combat the heat. The beginning line was ironic,

“Bonjour! How y’all doin’?”

The stunts were pretty spectacular. I found the detailed explanations of the build of the car and engine size, special mechanics, etc. a little prolonged…The family loved it-especially Dad. I thought it was good but not my favorite. Definitely worth seeing at least once.

After the show, another CM took us back down the elevator. Everyone had to use the bathroom and there were excellent bathrooms right outside the show entrance. Very nice Companion Restroom. Since I have been complaining of rude restroom users, I will share this nice story. A Dad was sending in his three girls (oldest looked about 9, youngest 5) but when he saw me and Dad waiting to get in, he told his girls to let us in and sent them to the women’s restroom. My only complaint about this Companion Restroom was that it was only accessible from inside the show area-a pretty big set back to one of a handful Companion Restrooms…

Our plan was to leave at this point (grabbing food before we left) since we were planning on getting up early to hit Animal Kingdom. On the way out we passed Star Tours which had…a 5 minute wait!

Change of plans. Seize the day!

This is one of Mom and Dad’s favorite rides. The plan was for Dad to ride while Mom stayed with me (she can suction-with difficulty in public areas), then for Dad to help Mom on the ride, Mom and Grandma ride, Dad helps Mom off ride. Danielle and I have never experienced Star Tours.

As we were explaining our plan to the CM, the kind older gentlemen asked, “Would you young ladies like to ride?”

We explained that Danielle and I couldn’t transfer.

“Well, have you ever done the non-motion ride?”

My ears perked up, “There’s a non-motion option? The floor doesn’t move or anything?”

“Would you like that?”

“Yes!”

“Let me get these folks off and then we’ll put you in number 5.”

Wow. I think I had a grin permaplastered to my face. This was a complete-very nice surprise. While we waited our turn, Danielle and I did a bit of pin trading. Danielle scored a Cast Member award pin that can’t be bought! I was a little green but before my jealousy could take full effect we were spirited away to our ship.

The CM flipped a little switch before we entered. The maneuvering was pretty tight. As I was squeezing in a turn, I heard a little snap. My vent door came off. Oops. Not a big deal. It’s mostly aesthetic-covering the lights from the control panel. Besides I was off to Endor!

It was fun to experience the peril and humor. I could definitely see why Mom loved Star Tours. It was fun to talk about the ride together. It took about thirty minutes for everyone to ride.

Our Star Tours ‘ride’ was a classic example of Disney going above and beyond.

After our harrowing journey, Danielle, Mom, and Grandma all had to use the bathroom. We used the bathroom outside the park-again empty.

Our Star Tours flight (and rest stop) put us home an hour later than planned. But demonstrated a lesson to every super planner.

Sometimes a change in plans can yield the most unexpectedly magical moment.

Next update on Saturday June 30, Animal Kingdom: feelin’ hot, hot, hot (Saturday July 22)

AK: Very Warm Yet Wonderful- Page 21, Post #313 and #314

Christamae...lovely update! We did LMA when we were there and it was sooooooo hot! And...I hate to sweat!

How wonderful that the CM informed you about the ride's other options. We also did Star Tours and loved loved loved it! Can't wait to hear more!

Christamae,

You gotta love those Cast Members who really "get it"!! What a great surprise! Let me share a CM story:

The first time we saw LMA my autistic son, who was 7yrs old at the time, unexpectedly became unwell and threw up in the stands. (Fortunately it was not crowded and no one got hit!)

We made our way quickly to the rest room so we could wash him off. His shirt was completely unwearable. We stepped outside and a CM had seen us and followed us down to make sure he was okay. After she checked on us, she took out a receipt book and wrote out a voucher so he could get a clean shirt at the gift shop... for free! How nice was that? And so completely unexpected!

I love WDW CMs!

Hope it's not too long til your next update!!

Kathy

p.s. I hope you're feeling better!!

Your words stand just fine on their own:thumbsup2

What an exciting installment. That was great and I love the pictures.
The one complaint I had about MGM was that the Companion Bathrooms were hard to find and very few and far between.
There do seem to be very few in MGM. Many of the ladies rooms have very large handicapped stalls with a sink inside (but that doesn't help someone who needs assistance from someone of the opposite sex).
A hint: First Aid has small printed out lists of where the Companion Restrooms are located. If we haven't been to the park for a while, we pick one up from First Aid in case they added any.
Everyone had to use the bathroom and there were excellent bathrooms right outside the show entrance. Very nice Companion Restroom. Since I have been complaining of rude restroom users, I will share this nice story. A Dad was sending in his three girls (oldest looked about 9, youngest 5) but when he saw me and Dad waiting to get in, he told his girls to let us in and sent them to the women’s restroom
We had that happen to us once on our last trip to. It's very nice when it does.
We had the opposite happen to us on our last trip at Epcot. Got to the Companion Restroom near Canada in WS and tried the door because the little sign that turns from 'vacant' to 'occupied' on some of the doors said "Vacant". The door didn't open; a CM going by tried the door and said it must be jammed because he couldn't get it open either. I told the CM that we had come to Canada to use the Companion restroom because the one in Morocco had also been 'jammed', even though it said 'Vacant'. The CM said he would get something to try to open the door for us.
At that point, a man who was sitting in the area said his DD was in that restroom and that when she came out, his wife was going to go in, he was after her and we would have to wait until his family had finished.
The CM asked them to use the regular restroom if they were able. They didn't say another word, but when the DD came out of the restroom, the whole family left the area.
. My only complaint about this Companion Restroom was that it was only accessible from inside the show area-a pretty big set back to one of a handful Companion Restrooms…
We didn't look for a Companion Restroom inside the show area, but there is one we have used several times right outside the show area.

I am so glad you wrote a new installment, :yay: I have been checking back everyday, hoping all has been well for you and your family.:goodvibes I am looking forward to the Animal Kingdom installment!!

Great day Christamae, how cool to meet the Indiana Jones actors and how lovely to get to ride Star Tours, CM's are lovely and probably get as much out of doing their good deeds as you get by receiving them :goodvibes

Hey, Christamae, I came to see what people had posted since I looked last. It looks like the Tag Fairy left you a memento for your trip.

Yay!! We've both been tagged!! I love it! Thank you, tag fairy!! *I can't find the emoticon w/ the giant grin so just pretend like it's inserted here*
I'll throw in these guys, too. :woohoo: :yay: :dance3: :cheer2: :cool1: :woohoo:
That was one of my favorite moments of the trip, too, so it'll be so cool to have a tag as a reminder!! I really like the colors, too. Thank you times infinity!

First, thank you, tag fairy! I am honored!! Here's some emoticons for you:

:cool1: :woohoo:  :cloud9: :goodvibes  :hippie: :wizard: :) :thumbsup2 :yay: :dance3: :flower3: pixiedust: :dancer: party: :jumping3: :upsidedow :Pinkbounc :flower: :flower1: :grouphug: :cheer2: :worship:

Goofyluver: Sweat=yuck. I actually get sick if I get hot...We combated the heat with spray fans and instant ice packs. I used an ice pack or two during LMA. The big fan I was under helped, too.

KathyRN137: Yes, CMs make the magic. Thanks for that story. And I am feeling better.

tokyodisneydad: Thanks. There are a few more pin trading stories...

eyeheartgoofy: Thank you. MGM was our favorite park this trip-we will visit it again in a few days.

SueM in MN: Thanks. Sorry about the not so nice family. I had a Mom and her daughter do that same thing in that same rest room...And thanks for the tag fairy notice

DawnA401: Thank you. AK will be on the 30th...It was a fun day and I met Wes Palm

jlcd: Thanks-MGM is fun-I wish I was there...I have Disney withdrawal.

DisneyJo: The Indie actors were nice-he posed for pictures and signed autographs for several people who came forward after the show.

CatStarr: MGM is great & a great day

Thank you to all reading and especially those posting!

AK on the 30th
