Okay, I'll be turning 16 in the beginning of August. I still haven't gone and taken the drivers ed. My mom and I was talking about taking it in July.

I was talking to my friend, and by doing researched.. I think in Louisiana you get your permit at 15, then license at 16. (like everywhere else, right?) Anyways, when I take it in July..

I've heard two things..
one- since I'll still be 15, if I get my permit.. I'll still have to have it for one year.
two- since my birthday is within a certain amount of time, I'll only have to have it for 180 days (6 months)

My boyfriend got his in March, a month before his birthday.. and he is getting his license in September. So six months later. But like I said.. I've heard that since I won't be 16 yet, I'll still have to wait a year..

I have to take a 4 week class, only on Saturday from 8am-12pm. And then the last Saturday is the test, then the next Monday you drive.

What's you state requirements for learner's pemits?

Here are a few things for New Brunswick in Canada.

-all drivers under the age of 21 must maintain a zero per cent blood alcohol level when driving.

-drivers with a learner's permit must be accompanied by an experienced driver, and cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m.

-once new drivers pass their road test, they still can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m., except for work or education or if they have an experienced driver with them.

-They can't have more than three passengers in the car.

-The restrictions are in place until they get their Class 2 licence - a minimum of two years after they start driving.

One other change has been delayed until Oct. 1. It would require anyone who completes a licensed driver's education program to wait eight months before they can take their road test. Those who don't enrol in such a program would have to wait 12 months.

You have to be 17 for a permit here
-__-

I'm getting my permit on the 12th or a few day's afterwards
Because I have to get it before drivers ed starts, but you can only get it 10 day before the class starts.
If you are 15 you have to take Drivers Ed. to get your permit here'
But you don't have to take the test
When you turn 15 1/2 you can get you permit with out taking Driver's Ed. but you have to take the test.
So I'm 15 and am taking Driver's Ed. as soon as school get out so I don't have to take the test!
But I have to have my permit for 6 month's before I can get my liscence
So I can get my liscense as soon as I turn 16 since I will have had my permit for 6 months.

Michigan-
Permit at 14 and 8 months after taking Segment I
Take Segment II after about 5-6 months,
License at 16.

I've had my permit for almost a year, still haven't taken Seg II

New York

Get permit at 16, no drivers ed needed
Get juniors liscense after 30 hours of drivers ed, juniors liscense allows you to drive to school and work
Get liscense after 30 hours of drivers ed and you turn 17

Yeah, that's what the are.
You had to have your permit by June 1st in order to get your license in four months.
Most of my friends didn't get theirs, so they have to wait.
I should have mine in July, the license that is. I've had my permit for a while.

Texas!
Permit at 15
you have to have it for six months.
License at 16
and you have to have it for six months before you can have more than one person in the car with you.

NH: you can drive at 15y6m without a permit and with an adult (I actually don't think you can get a permit in NH....you just kinda...start driving).

You can start Driver's Ed at anytime provided that you will either turn 16 or are already 16 before the class ends.

After that, you're free to get your license.

I was almost 17 by the time I got mine because it was so hard to get into Driver's Ed.

in tennessee you can take a test and get your permit when you're 15. after 6 months/when you turn 16 you can take a road test to get your license. that's it. no drivers ed required.

PA.

Like Shelby, you take a written test at 16 to get your learner's permit. Once you reach 16 1/2 and have X amount of hours driven, you can go for a road test and get your license. No driver's ed needed, although it helps.

ETA: I have been 16 for barely a month, and people won't stop bugging me about why I haven't gotten my permit yet! Ugh.

This is pretty much what we can do at 18, but Driver's Ed cuts my insurance like you wouldn't believe. I could have waited until 18 (well, OK, not really. I WANTED MY LICENSE, DAGNABBIT! lol) but after comparing what my insurance would have been...Driver's Ed was definately the way to go just money wise.

Agreed.
Insurance is much cheaper here with Drivers Ed. I also wanted my license early, and I find it's a good idea to get educated. I also hate driving with my parents, and my brother isn't around, so it's nice to have someone who doesn't freak out when I make mistakes. Plus, drivers ed cars are usually equipped with breaks and stuff on the passenger side, so it's safer to practice. Obviously my parents cars don't have extra breaks, so they just yell at me till I cry when I make a mistake.

How much is your drivers ed discount? In Massachusetts it can be up to 20% I think. Insurance is like $200+ a month so drivers ed is worth it.

Not that this was aimed at me, or I know how much of a discount I get here...
but it's cheap enough here my parents will pay for my insurance (I'm driving their cars), my brother has never paid for his insurance. And we're not rich, or even spoiled when it comes to vehicles, my parents just don't see the point in making us pay for something they can easily pay for themselves.

Do you have to have insurance in Canada? I know here you do.

In New Jersey its
-permit at 16 after drivers ed that you take in school plus 6 hours of guided driving with an instructor
-license at 17 but with restrictions: only one person in your car that is out of your immediate family, and there are only certain hours that you can drive
-at 18 you get an unrestricted license.

its kind of annoying. but w/e.
