Drive or Fly?

We are hoping to be heading to Florida from Ontario, Canada in the middle of Sept. I'm just a little unsure about flying. It would be cheaper to fly than to rent a van and drive (mine is just too small to accomodate us all on such a long drive). It is also a nicer and quicker trip to fly. My only issue is I know that it is hurricane season. Now with six kids the thoughts of being stranded in an airport for days is definately not appealing. Also we fly southwest interet or ding fare so I don't know if they will charge a lot more for a flight if ours is cancelled? Any recommendations?

If you purchase your airfare and your flight is cancelled/changed due to weather or other problems you will not pay any additional fare. You will be placed on the next available flight for your party size.

However, yes there is a chance of sitting in an airport for an extended period of time.

However, with hurricanes they do move slow enough that airport officials will notify that the airport will close at least 24 hours in advance, so you should know before you even leave for the airport. You should be able to stay at your hotel until the airport opens back up.

For example, in Sept 2004 we arrived at WDW 2 days before Hurricane Jeanne was supposed to hit. When we arrived on Friday night, they had already announced that the airport would be closing late Saturday night and would not reopen till Monday morning. My son was only staying for the weekend and was supposed to fly home on Sunday night. I simply called the airline later Friday night and they rescheduled his flight home for Monday night. I was on hold with the airline for almost 2 hours, but my son did not spend any extra time at the airport.
