Drinks During Gym Class? (inspired by WDWAurora's "fire lane" thread)

I'm probably just an insensitive meanie, but why are modern kids so prone to dehydration when I don't recall a problem when I was in school? We got drinks from the fountain at the appointed time, and I don't recall anyone having problems because they couldn't sit at their desk sipping water all day long. IMO, kids today are being raised to be such needy wimps - have water on demand all day - get snacks constantly (why can't they finish a one-hour soccer game w/o snack?!?!?) - etc. It's just so self-centered to me. But I'm sure many will disagree.

:dog: ITA!

I am sure it is because there are kids who run to the water fountain every 5 minutes for a drink....to avoid doing the things they don't like in Gym, to talk to their friends who may be instudy hall and wandering around, to dawdle around, to see if they can get a peek at the cute guy/girl who they know walks by the Gym every day at 1045AM on their way to wherever...it wasn't that long ago that I was in school and these were all very "important" reasons to go and get a drink of water.

Any healthy kid who is able to take Gym is not going to become dehydrated in a 30-45 minute Gym class.

Put me on the list of insensitive meanies. When I think of some of the things I did when I was a kid, it's a miracle I survived by today's standards. ;)

I graduated in the 80s and I remember being in the band and dehydration was a huge problem for us. Our band director would tell us all the time to get drinks out of the fountain between classes throughout the day because come practice after school, kids would drop like flies!

And this is just speculation about younger kids, but I bet back when we were younger, more kids ate fresh fruits and other foods that had a higher water content than they do now. How many kids do you see munching apple or orange slices at lunch compared to back then? Kids' diets are pretty horrid these days, which could contribute to dehydration.

My DD's gym class is two periods long so more like 90 minutes and they do harder stuff like running a mile, cross country, and other activities where you really do need a drink.....

We never had drink at gym in ES (it was an AP room so no fountain)... but I can remember asking to go for a drink after we got back to regular class...

But then again maybe they don't give the kids drinks....you know they still make our kids do full sits when as adults the first thing an arobics instructor or trainer will tell you is that crunches are better.

In my gym class (HS level), there is a water fountain in the gym, but we generally don't use it. The only time we use it is during the pacer test (the worst, most strenuous fitness test known to man, lol) or at the end of class. We are allowed to if we ask, but we generally don't. We are all pretty much sweating by the end of gym. The other day, we were playing a really stupid, pointless game, but this one kid, who is fairly athletic, was sweating so bad. His shirt was soaked and sweat was dripping down his face. Not once did he get a drink during class. Of course, when we came downstairs to the locker rooms, most people got one. In elementary gym classes, I really don't think it's necessary to get a drink. JMHO.
