What's the drinking age in Nassau?

The legal drinking age in the Bahamas is 18.

The counselors in the teen club told our DGS that the limit is by height, not by age and that many of them would be "legal" there. BUT that if they heard of any one in the group drinking while there, they would not be allowed back in the club. Don't know if that was true, but DGS believed it.

Thanks, I am trying to give some freedom to my DS and friend. One is 17 and one is 18. Don't get me wrong , my son hangs out with a great group of friends and have never caught him doing anything illegal. That being said, I am not naive enough to think that he has never tried it. I am just worried that they might try to buy a bottle in the Bahamas and then end up all sloppy drunk or something like that. I have friends who have brought their children on board other cruise lines and let them drink. (even buy for them) They figure it is a controlled enviorment and that they are supervising so some how it is safer. I just feel uneasy about it. Has anyone else expierenced this?

One thing I can tell you is that the drinking age on DCL is 21 at all times, so you don't have to worry about your DS's friend drinking onboard. The legal drinking age in the Bahamas is 18, but it is true, if you're pretty tall, they'll serve you regardless of age. It probably would be PRETTY easy for your DS and his friend to get off the ship and purchase alcohol, especially because the friend is legal there. So, you have two options. First, since your DS is under the age of 18, he does need parental consent to leave the ship without you. His friend is only 18, and isn't old enough to be considered a guardian to allow them off the ship together, you need to be 21 for that. So, you'll have to let DCL know that you're o.k. with him leaving the ship without you, if you don't he won't be able to disembark without you. You could revoke their being able to go ashore without adultl supervision and just let them have full access onboard. Now, my kids are only 7 and 4, but I wouldn't let my 17YO off in a foreign port alone, especially the Bahamas. I'd guess they'd be off the ship for about 1 minute before they are offered to purchase something MUCH more illegal than alcohol!!!

Your last comment is sooo true. While in Nassau a couple of weeks ago my 49 yr old DH was offered that "Not legal" stuff on more than a couple of occassions and we were only in Nassau 4 hours or so. Funny, it was always when I had my back turned.

Let me say that I had parents who believed in showing their children the world. We had traveled around it by the time I was 18. We used to spend the holidays in Nassau for several of my (and my sisters) teenage years. We were allowed to go "unsupervised", as well as drink alcohol. Please believe that just because people are different than you, it does not mean they are out to harm you! If you have a conversation about being safe and good decisions I feel like all the hard work you have put into raising your child will come out when you "cut the apron strings". I agree that the conversation should also include not smoking any pot (I think the kids call it weed now, lol) because I know all too well that the likelyhood of them being offered is good. Of course it is probably just as good Monday at school.

Easy for me to say.......as my children are 12, 10, and 6! Wonder if I will feel so safe in a couple of years.................

LOL-didn't even feel safe leaving poor old DH on his own in Nassau. Came back and not only was he offered "weed" a couple of times, but he was covered in shell necklaces and bracelets and paying a little three yr old girl for singing "He's got the whole world in his Hands" to him!

Last time I was on the wonder (about 6 months ago) the counselers told all the teens that it IS legal if you are 18 on shore, but the moment you set foot on the ship you're in US territory and it is 21, so you can be put under "Stateroom Arrest" for the remainder of the cruise, then be handed to Floridas athoritys when you got back, I think they exagerated quite a bit, but I dont think I saw anyone getting drunk on shore....

It not that I even mind if he had a drink. I look forward to the day when I can have a couple of pops with him. Not worried about dope. He and his friends are on the straight and narrow about that stuff. I just have this visual of him or his friend being dragged across deck 9 because they are to drunk to stand up. AAggggghhhh!

Yes, the Cosulers told us about the singing children, They tell you "I sing you if you give me dollar" so of course they're cute so you say yes, then they sing one line and stick out the're hand for a dollar, and you have to pay them because otherwise it is stealing!! So jsut avoid the singing kids

and the children offering to take a picture for you-these are the same ones that "sing" too. It was too funny-once you pay one to sing, they are followed by a "choir" ready to do the same.
