Hi all! I'm leaving Tuesday and, based on recommendations here, I am hoping to pick up some plastic cups (I've decided not to bring our Tervis) for our cruise.

I'm curious, though, when people say the cups are small on the ship, what exactly is small? Are they cups that we can put a lid on (for kids)? Are they like soda fountain drinks at a fast food place?

I think this is my last question before our cruise :).

Thanks so much!

There are lids available for the drink cups. I think they may even be smaller than 12oz but I could be wrong. I just can't see a regular can of soda fitting in one.

Maybe the lids I was thinking of Vero Beach. We went right after our last cruise.

there are lids and also straws. the cups are small but not tiny, i understand peoples need to bring cups i guess but i just didn't feel it and i need the room in my suitcase for more important things. your children will have no trouble with them.
one thing that was suggested here, and i feel is brilliant, is to bring one of cardboard cup holder trays that you get at fast food places so you can carry drinks for the family and not spill them all over. again, brilliant!

Here are an example of the cups and the relative size...they have lids and straws as well

Just curious, why did you decide to not bring the Tervis and look for another kind? I'm asking because we all bought Tervis pirate cups for our cruise.
Thanks.

As already noted, the cups are small. 12 oz at most but closer to 10 oz I think. They are perfect for younger kids but very small for thirsty adults! We always bring our own larger cups.

The answer to that is put small things like (clean) socks inside the cups before you pack them. This way, they take up very little room.

We brought double walled insulated mugs with screw on lids and straws. We got them at Target, I think the brand was Aladin. They worked great.

I've always taken one of my old resort refillable mugs with me on cruises, they have lids and straw holes and worked great to refill at the soda station.

We've taken our Tervis mugs on 2 cruises now...never had any trouble with sunscreen, and we even used them on Castaway Cay. Yes, we use a lot of sunscreen. Our cups still look brand new!

Lucky! I used sunscreen the first day I took my 2013 Tervis dcl cup outside at home and ruined the exterior. Coppertone SPF something-high, put it on my kid, didn't clean it off my palms, held the mug. Permanent palm prints hazing the plastic.

The finish/exterior of Tervis cups can be damaged by sunscreen.

From Tervis's website:

http://www.tervis.com/use-care#sunscreen

Thanks for the information. That makes sense - sunscreen can do damage to other surfaces such as nail polish too.
I am surprised to hear that about the Tervis products - we have a bunch of Tervis cups that we use poolside in Florida, some of them are years old and none show any evidence of damage from our sunscreens. I think we'll take a chance with our cups on the cruise.

Sounds like you're using a Tervis-friendly sunscreen. What are you using, so I know to think about using that instead?

I wish I could say that we've stuck to any one brand, but I'm sure over the years it's been everything from the more expensive labels to no-name generics.
Out of curiosity, I did a bit if browsing on the web and it seems that the aerosal propellants in spray sunscreens (and bug sprays, etc.) may be the culprit. Sprays have been linked to damage of many plastic surfaces including car seats, sunglasses, Nook cases and so on. We don't use sprays so it makes sense. I guess we'll stay away from those and wipe hands after applying lotions. :beach:

Aerosol spray sunscreen and bug spray supposedly takes out the waterproofing on tents as well (according to our local Boy Scout Council). They only let the boys bring non-aerosol products to camp.
