I don't usually tip above and beyond that unless I have been using the same bartender or server for a few drinks...then I usually leave them a few bucks when I am done.

There are a few places on the ship where you have to tip whether you want to or not (it's not voluntary). All bars, the cove cafe, drinks from roving servers (think sail away party, CC), bottled water sales (such as when you depart for an excursion), all snack sales windows (outside the theaters), and the spa (yes, 18% no matter what service you received).

Having said that, I have NEVER encountered a bar or coffee service that didn't deserve a tip. Over many years, many services, every one has been friendly, attentive, and a pleasure. But tipping someone who sells me popcorn? And the huge tip the spa requires? Those don't seem right, but that's life, just remember that when you choose those services.

The only time I have added an extra tip to a bartender was when they were so good that they would see me coming and have my drink made before I got to the bar!

I do. Making a specialty coffee drink or serving an adult beverage are similar activities in my mind. I usually tip an additional amount to make the total tip at least 25%, assuming the service was timely and friendly. So, for a $5 beverage with a $0.75 auto gratuity(at 15%), I would add another $0.50 on the tip line for a total of $6.25.

I wonder how often that happens to other guests? No one knows, of course.

But whether it's rare or common might be interesting to find out. Perhaps the drink servers have a desirable job on the ship...could be much less stress and more pay than the dining room servers (even with the automatic required tip!).

I do, because I don't really like tipping less than $2, regardless of percent(unless i am in Germany), so i add onto the auto if its less than $2 to bring it up to $2ish.

Up until this trip (trip 9) I thought they were then someone mentioned to me last week and I checked my old receipts! As it was a bar man serving I assumed it would include a tip but didn't! Will be correcting this from now on.

I always round up and then add a dollar or two. If I'm spending that much money on a cruise a few extra bucks by the end of the cruise to make sure I receive great service isn't going to break me.

I, too, was very surprised that I got charged for an 18% tip on popcorn outside the Buena Vista Theater. It was not voluntary. It must be the way most of these people get paid. Something to look out for.

Oh now that's interesting! I feel I might need to pay more attention here but after 4/5 drinks I'm usually a bit less inclined to rotfl

But you got great service. You probably did not wait long between empty glasses. This is why people will often seek out the same bar tenders and tip appropriately. You will be sure to get a bit better service and attention than the person next to you who hasn't built a rapport.
