Dressing or Stuffing?

We don't put it in the bird anymore but we always call it stuffing. Can't quite grasp calling it dressing,

For those of you that call it dressing..what do you call the stuff you put on your salad if you call stuffing dressing????

We call it stuffing. We always cook it outside the bird (well, we almost always make just the turkey breast instead of the whole bird b/c no one in my family eats wings & legs) in a casserole dish. My mom and dad are from NY & NJ, and I always thought it was a North vs. South thing in regards to whether you called it stuffing or dressing. I think my in-laws call it stuffing (they live in SE Virginia), but that might be because all MIL makes is Stove Top Stuffing (almost every night b/c FIL loves the stuff).

Anyone else eat dressing instead of stuffing?

That is what we call it in my family. It is not cooked in the bird but seperate.


So what do you do in your family?

We always do dressing around here. But, then again with our huge family get togethers are the holidays, stuffing a bird wouldn't be worth it. We go ahead and have it already carved up for everyone to add to their plates in the buffet line. BTW, my mom makes the BEST dressing!

Years ago my mom started fixing a pan of stuffing/dressing in addition to stuffing the bird, because we always ran out, and everyone loved it so much. Well, then no one wanted the drier pan 'dressing', only the super-moist and delicious stuffing from the bird. So she started mixing it all up together. YUUUUUUMMMMMM!

We call it stuffing whether in or out of the bird. I think dressing is more of a southern term but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time .

I always heard that if you put dressing inside the bird, you ran the risk of getting salmonella or other food poisening. Yuck! So ours is always cooked outside of the bird and we still call it dressing.

Being a southern-bred girl who moved to the north, I use the terms interchangeably, but I never ever put any inside the bird because it makes it too mushy and who needs to the extra worry of salmonella.
