Dressing Modestly...

Now I have the opposite problem with plus sized clothing. I find that all the plus sized stores think all heavier women have ginormous breasts! I am here to tell you that no, not all of us do.

Yeah I know you're right--I know some plus size women with small breasts. And I can totally believe that you/they have the opposite problem I do and I'm sure it's just as annoying.

There must be some particular breast size the manufacturers are aiming for though--the perfect breast size for plus size clothes. I'm guessing it's about a C. Chubby women with C cups must have all the luck! :lmao:

I don't think empire waists are attractive on a lot of people. It makes me look pregnant.

lol....I like the empire waist cuz it actually makes me look like I have b00bs!

I think everyone should dress how they are comfortable. I think longer pencil skirts and oxfords can be very cute and trendy... and sexy without putting anything out there. I'm not a short skirt wearer, but after I have my baby, I actually have b00bs for a short period of time....so I'm wearin that pushup and a lower cut top than normal... it makes me happy !! LOL

Yeah -- I always think women wearing empire waists look kinda pregnant!

I think the only people who can pull them off are:
a) the very very young
b) very tiny, small-boned women and
c) women who are actually pregnant :lmao:

It's kinda astounding that the fashion industry thinks empire waists are flattering to women in general (or especially that they are marketing them in plus sized :scared1: )

lol..maybe that's why I like em.... I've been pregnant for the past 2 yrs it seems....lol...otherwise I'm pretty small (but not so young any more :sad2: )

I'm fairly small (5"8, around 130 pounds, size 4) and empire tops look awful on me.:scared:

Right now I'm looking for spring/summer clothes and having quite a bit of trouble. It seems like all the longer skirts/dresses I can find are at more expensive stores like Banana Republic and Club Monaco... and I have tuition to pay!

Skirts and dresses are particularly difficult because I'm tall, so they tend to run shorter.

Any ideas?:goodvibes

lol, there ya go! :lmao:

Actually, on the few women who can pull them off, I LOVE empire waists and think they make them look so beautiful. :lovestruc

Oh, honey if I only had that problem. I really don't know where to tell you to look. Do you have a Kohl's nearby, they have a great selection of clothes at reasonable prices. They are always having 70% and 80% off racks near the back of each department and usually offer coupons.

Suzanne

Thanks Suzanne! I live in Canada so we don't have Kohl's here, but I am planning on driving down to the US sometime in the next few weekends for a girl's shopping trip and I'll check it out. Am I right in thinking that Kohl's is like a department store?

Oh, and when I say they look awful on me... I mean even I'm too big for them! They make me look like I'm pregnant or they cut my chest in two. Not a great look for me. There are a few people who they flatter but I am surely not one of them!

Wear what you feel comfortable in. Forget what others think.
Great advice, and it works both ways: While others should not disparage dressing modestly, you shouldn't disparage dressing less conservatively. Indeed, there should be just as much respect for the decisions of those who choose to dress less conservatively than the norm as the decisions of those who choose to dress more conservatively than the norm.

There is a HUGE difference between dressing modestly and being a modesty dresser. Modesty dressing is a lifestyle that I stumbled across several years ago and it was a real eyeopener. I am not going to say anymore about the lifestyle, but lets just say I learned about all kinds of things I didn't know really existed outside of a bad lifetime movie.

I am also a plus size gal who likes to keep covered up and stylish and my favorite place to shop is CJ Banks. I use to go to Kohl's and Catharines, but since I found them, CJ Banks is my favorite.

Thanks for the clarification on the focus on the face thoughts. I'm following you now! :teeth:

Yes, modesty as a lifestyle is certainly different from what we are discussing here! I too learned some eye opening things when searching for places to purchase clothing! LOL.

Men's pants are far better than women's for the most part, aren't they? They have pockets, sturdy seams, and are generally more comfortable. They don't work for all women though, that's for sure.

From my personal point of view, I don't care if someone is "conventionally gorgeous" or "conventionally plain" and regardless of size, I do find clothing that I consider to be too revealing a reflection on the person's level of professionalism. (I am speaking solely about clothing in the workplace now). I do keep my opinions to myself, but to say that the appearance of a person does not affect another person's initial concept of them is a little naive, eh? :)

But then, I do not dress to attract or enhance. I dress to be clothed, and as simple in my clothing as I can. I simply do not like much of what is out there, and when I do find something I like (for instance, Land's End dress shirt for women) I will buy it in every color I like. Same for trousers! Boring! That's me! LOL!

I also travel quite a bit for work and it's much simpler to have pieces that mix and match without much thought.

I have worn plus sizes in my life, and wasn't ever really happy with the choices there either. I too was not overly endowed :) even at a much larger size, so tops were a particular challenge.

Whew! All this to simply show support for the OP! :teeth:

Have you tried Reitmans? They have a tall department, and their pants are my absolute favourite - they have a couple of different "fits" (classic, trend, etc.) and I could pick up any pair in my favourite type, and I knew they'd fit perfectly. They were very reasonably priced, but professional looking. I know they have a lot of dresses and skirts, but I'm more of a pant girl at work (teaching is hard enough without having to worry about showing leg!)

Hope it didn't come across as me disparaging others who dress less conservatively. I tried to avoid that... I certainly avoid judging the dress of others as much as I can. Of course, I am not perfect and I am certain that there are times when I unconsciously allow appearance to influence the way I view a person, but I try as hard as I can.

Oh for sure! Modesty dressing certainly is different and while I respect it, it isn't something I follow in my own practice. I've stumbled across a lot of interesting websites doing Google searches for modest clothing and have learned a lot from them. I do have friends from church who prefer to wear only skirts/dresses but I love a good pair of jeans!

And thanks for the shopping suggestions, everyone, I'll look into them!

Learn to sew :thumbsup2 ? You also might want to check out Chico's. I know their clothing styles aren't for everybody, but they do have longer skirts that mix&match really well with separates, plus they are always running some kind of special if you get on their e-mail list.

agnes!

For me it has nothing at all to do with religion and everything to do with privacy and self respect. :)

A nun once taught me that the most sensual thing about a woman is her mystery. One has no mystery if one's body parts are hanging out for all to see.

I think it is judgemental of you to assume people who may be comfortable with their body have less self respect. Also I hardly think a Nun is the best person to say what a man may find the most sensual thing about a woman.

And I believe that people really SHOULD leave something to the other parties' imaginations when dressing. I haven't been able to understand the whole "advertising" way people seem to dress in nowadays. :sad2:

::yes::
It's quite gross actually.

OP, I'm a teen and while I'm not as modest as you, I prefer not to show off all my bits and pieces.
I've never worn a mini skirt, and I generally don't wear skirts and dresses. I'm not skinny, but not overweight either and I still get the "chub rub".
I mostly live in bermuda shorts during the summer. Pants are too hot and capris make me look horrible (I'm short - only 5'3). I'll occasionally wear shorter shorts, but they reach about mid-thigh.
I can not STAND low rise pants. AHH! Just because I fit in a 6 doesn't mean I'm skinny! I don't want to bend over and have my pants fall down because they're too low!

My motto is "where want you want. anyone who doesn't like it, tough"!

Just curious to see if there are any others out there who feel similarly to me...

I am a university student and I dress quite modestly. No skirts above the knee, no tank tops in public (though I do wear them around the home), no low cut tops/dresses... things like that. I do love dressing up and shopping... I have lots of clothes and I love finding cute skirts, pretty cardigans, a great pair of jeans, necklaces, bracelets, etc.

A few of my friends jokingly tease me because I always have my shirts buttoned/zipped up, etc. They fully believe in the "if you've got it, flaunt it" theory, but I find myself really uncomfortable when I wear revealing clothes. Male attention from people I don't know kind of unsettles me and I hate catcalls and things like that.

Am I the only one out there like this? The only other place I seem to find similar viewpoints is at my church, but I'm wondering if this is just a religious thing? I don't consider myself to be uptight, I'm just not fully comfortable with my body and showing it off.

Thoughts?

Have you met the Duggers. (google them) They are big supporters of modesty dressing. They have a whole bunch of others beliefs but the modesty thing is really big with both thier girls and thier boys.
