Do I need to wear a dress shirt to Palo? Or will a nice polo shirt work. Also, do I need to wear a tie with my dress shirt. Does the dress shirt need to be long shelves or will short slelves be allowed?

Thank you
Arthur

Dress shirt and tie .. short sleeves are ok.

If you turn up without a tie, you will politely be asked to re-dress!! :thumbsup2

Actually, you aren't required to wear a tie at Palo, my husband will usually wear a short sleeved dress shirt with a jacket, but has also gone with just the shirt and never been asked to change.

The dress code says dress shirt or jacket. No tie is required. If you want to wear a polo, I'd suggest putting a jacket over it. I don't know about short sleeves, my husband never wears them.

We just got home today from a B2B on the Dream. We had a Palo dinner and a Palo brunch. Let me tell you how pee'd my DH was when we walked in for dinner and there were guys in Polo Shirts, tennis shoes AND flip flops. Now they weren't the majority but they sure did stand out. DH did NOT want to wear a tie but I told him that he had too.

Now for brunch we found more of the same. Polos, tennis shoes and flip flops and even one guy was wearing cargo pants. For this meal I allowed my husband to wear a nice short sleeve button down shirt and slacks. He wasn't as upset about this outfit!!! (He HATES ties!!!)

All depends on how much respect you have for the restaurant, and how much class you have or want to show up others! :)

Buffet - flip flops, shorts, t-shirt..... OK.

General Restaurant at Lunch - Shoes/Sneekers - pants/maybe shorts - polo shirt minimum

General Restaurant at Dinner - Shoes - pants - shirt/smart polo shirt

Nice Restaurant (Palo) - Shoes - Pants - Shirt and Jacket if appropriate

Polo shirts are not required or even requested in the main dining rooms for lunchtime. Actually, the "Buffet" recommendations above are completely acceptable for lunch. The request is simply that you be dressed - NOT in a swimsuit or cover-up. For lunchtime, shorts are fine.

Also, DCL does not request for a polo-shirt in the main dining rooms at dinnertime, either. They request no shorts. So men in pants and a t-shirt that isn't ripped or an "athletic"-type shirt are completely within the guidelines requested.

As to the OP's question - you didn't say what time of day you'd be visiting Palo. We tend to see more casual type attire for brunch and high tea - so LOTS of polo shirts. Then for dinner, some are more dressy and do wear dress shirts and ties - but even still there are many polo shirts with a jacket.

Official Palo rule: Jacket or dress shirt and tie.

In November, DH wore a sports jacket. He didn't want to pack it, but did. Some men were in a nice shirt without a tie. Boy, did I hear about it! :rotfl:

This time (last week), DH wore a very nice long-sleeved shirt with a collar (not officially a dress shirt) and nice pants. It was perfect.

He had his full suit upstairs (for formal night) and would have gone and gotten the jacket if needed.

My husband wore a long-sleeved dress shirt and tie for Palo dinner and a Polo shirt for Palo brunch.

My last trip to Palo we called to double check on the requirements as I had forgotten my tie. I was explicitly told that a tie was required, so I went to the store and bought an ugly DCL tie. When I showed up at least 1/4 to 1/2 of the guest were without a tie. I was highly peeved. I've only heard of one person being asked the change and that was because they were wearing shorts. That said, I would still wear a tie next time I went..and a long sleeve dress shirt.

It's all about how much class you have.

Thank you everyone for the comments. I always bring dress shirts and polo shirts on vacations but the tie doesn't always make it. The tie will definely be packed. I don't want be the guy in store buying the ugly dcl tie.

Directly from DCL's website:

Dress Code
At dinner, a dress shirt or jacket is required to be worn for men and a dress or pantsuit is required to be worn by women. No jeans allowed.
At brunch, attire is cruise casual, meaning no shorts, jeans, swimwear or tank tops.

As you can see on DCL's website there is no mention of a tie being needed.

DH just wore a dress shirt and dress pants for dinner. For dinner he wore a short sleeve button down sport shirt and khakis.

DH always wears a suit to Palo. I just asked him if he'd be comfortable wearing a golf/polo shirt to Palo and he said absolutely not, shirt & tie (jacket optional). He does not wear a suit for his job. This is for dinner - brunch he'd wear a golf/polo shirt.

Last time we had dinner at Palo there were a couple of men in t-shirts. It didn't ruin my evening but I found it annoying. I know it's their vacation but the point of Palo is to have a romantic, fancy, childless dinner and does it really hurt to dress up for a couple of hours? If you don't want to dress for the venue then there are other options for dinner. But that's our opinion...

A tie is absolutely not required. This is stated on the website, as noted above. It was confirmed for us by DCL via phone, and I can tell you from 1st hand experience. We have had dinner at Palo on two separate cruises and neither time was a tie required. DH confirmed for me just now what he wore for dinner last week: nice pants and a nice flannel, button down shirt. Last cruise he wore a long-sleeved polo shirt and a blazer, with nice pants. Upon noticing almost no one else was wearing a blazer, he removed it and it was on the back of his chair the entire dinner.

correct. no tie required.
but, DH & DS (now 19 and finally able to enjoy Palo) gladly wore dress shirt and tie. DCL also states "no tommy bahama" type shirts acceptable, but there were plenty of men wearing them. i feel if i'm all dressed up for a nice, quiet, romantic dinner with exceptional service and a fantastic dinner menu, i expect my "boys" to dress for the occasion also. DS enjoyed his first Palo experience; loved the ambience and especially his first "osso bucco" !.

For what it is worth, my experience was about 3 years ago.

We had both brunch and dinner in Palo last week. The only dress clothing DH packed (in spite of my repeated requests for dress shirt and tie) was his tuxedo for formal night. So he wore a collared shirt and nice pants to both meals at Palo (refusing to put on the tuxedo again). To dinner, he wore a nice pullover sweater over his plaid shirt so he did not look too casual. I wish he had brought something a bit dressier, but there you are. You can lead a horse to water....

He carefully perused the Palo dress code, so we knew he would be "OK." Enjoy your meal, our meals there were two highlights from a WONDERful week!
