Ok my SIL is getting married in San Diego ( I know this is Orlando board lol) thought you may all be able to tell me your experiences. She does not want to check her dress in her luggage but I doubt she can carry it on... HELP! How did you get your fancy wedding dresses to their destination? :rotfl2: they are flying southwest

I got married in Las Vegas with a huge dress. I REFUSED to even consider putting it in checked luggage. I carried it on both flights (the first was a very small plane) with no problems. They are very used to this, and were very accommodating to me. I think the flight attendants realized it was better to have the dress taking up closet space (the mid to large size planes actually have closets to hang stuff like that in) than to have a bride freaking out for the whole flight :lmao:

My roommates mom works for an airline and said that a lot of girls carry their dresses on. If the plane somehow runs out of room, the flight attendents will put it in their storage area. No worries. They should accomodate you.

I shipped mine FedEx to a tuxedo rental/dress steaming/bridal gown store that delivered it to my hotel for me. I dunno if there's such a place in San Diego - will she be having her gown steamed/pressed before the wedding? That company might accept the dress for her. Or she could ship it to her hotel. Either way, she can skip the hassle of lugging it through the airport and stressing about it.

i too refused to allow my dress to be out of my site for even 1/2 a second. after a slight argument, the dress had a window seat on the plane to orlando for my wedding. i even strapped it in...

Caryn that is too cute, love it!!!

You should be able to bring it on..I remember somebody telling me that they flew SouthWest and she brought the dress on no problem. Tell her to call and see what they say.

I shipped my dress,it was so easy, not nervous at all.I watched the tracking of it the whole time and put insurance on it God for bid something happened.

If I did bring it on the plane to me I would not check it in baggage at all,I would have done what Caryn did lol.

I carried on my dress on Southwest, no problem. They don't have anywhere you can hang it (at least they didn't on my plane) so I had to fold it in half and put it in the overhead.

I actually called Southwest a couple of days ago. They advised that they do not have a place to hang it and I would need to fold it in half twice and put it in a carry-on bag to place in the overhead bin.

i flew southwest and when i got to the airport, i asked at the desk if the flight was full and she said it was not. so my dress got a seat. i had a conversation with the flight attendant (who thought the open seat should remain open-UH NO)...

I checked with Delta before we flew. The plane we were on had a closet and the staff and attendants were wonderful. We checked in at the desk before boarding to let them know I had a wedding dress and they let us board early and get settled. They even got the dress out for us before we got off and let us off first.

Coming home we were on Jet Blue with no closet but the attendants were very nice and put it into their storage compartment.

Thanks, I thought it may be OK with the flight attendants but I was more nervous about taking it through security?!?!?! :confused3 Does it go through the Xray thingy? Did anyone have Security give them a hard time due to the size of the garment bag?

they made me put mine through the scanner, they wouldn't hand scan it. i even offered to take it out of the bag, but they weren't having it. i had a minor panic attack as it was going through the scanner, but it came out unharmed...

My mother thinks that we have to buy a ticket for the dress. Has anyone else ever done/heard of this??

 that could be pricey!! If you're worried about carrying it on, do what Carrie did and ship it right to Carolyn Allen. I think I'm doing that too...:confused3

i shipped my dress there and back from boston. i have family who lives there and brought it with them. my bridal shop pressed it and put in the box. it was fully insured. I then had it shipped home (carolyn allens was wonderful) fully insured again. We were flying jet blue and they said with us flying on a holiday weekend (martin luther king) the odds were not good of it getting into a closet. there was no way i was going to check it.
expencive way to do it, but it survived and it was safe

Anyone else have any comments on this? We are flying out the day before Memorial Day on Delta, I was thinking about shipping it until the lady at the bridal shop told me how bad of an idea it was and how things in shipping always get lost :( So now I am thinking about taking it on the plane with me, anyone have any problems with Delta? Anyone ever have problems with shipping the dress?

Thanks

I successful carried my dress on both going and coming home from California to Orlando. I kept it in it's garment bag and folded it in half and put it in the overhead for both flights. I had Carolyn Allen's steam it the day of the wedding and had no problems.
