Dress code for parks

Ok, my profile picture is the one below:

This was taken at Epcot in one of the kiosks where you can take a picture and email it to friends/family.

To be honest, that shirt actually looks a little "lower" than it actually was, just because of the angle of the camera how we were trying to lean over to get into the picture. We never had a single person say anything to us, nor do I find that shirt inappropriate. So, you can see her shoulders and the top of her chest? So what? According to some of the responses, this shirt shouldn't be allowed. I say why not? It's not like anything is hanging out all over the place, and the fact was it was about 98 degrees that day!

I can understand not allowing shirts that show a large percentage of a woman's chest, but just your basic tube top? (My wife's even had a string that went around her neck, just so she wouldn't have to worry about it falling down). She's "gifted" in that area (actually, that really is a bad picture, you can't even tell...lol), but she's not showing anything that is even remotely "sexual" in nature. Last I checked, I haven't found the collarbone and upper pectorals very sexy on anything...lol

P.S. Oh yea, and we're locals, and that has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

First of all, you guys are too funny! I have to admit I do unfortunatly weigh exactly 300 lbs. Do any of you really know what that looks like. Unless you are a health care provider taht takes weights for patients then I bet that you don't. I could be wrong. Now 300 lbs looks different on some people then it does on others. Let me say I am very active, I have been overweight my whole life and now I just focus on trying to be healthy. Maybe I will lose some weight in the process. If I do lose weight it will be for health reasons, it will not be to please the guests that are forced to look at me when I go to Disney. I do dress modestly, but even if I weighed 120 lbs I would still dress in good taste. I saw a very small women dressed half naked last week at a parade and that was just as disgusting as a fat person dressed half naked. Anyway , I will try not to scare any small children while I am at Typhoon Lagoon in May. I will have on short sleeves so you may want to watch out. Now I have never scared my own children with my size. But then again I have raised them to know that people all have the same feelings regardless of our size,age, income, race, etc.

I was kinda going here. When I read the OP Post, I thought to myself " A tube top DOES NOT look the same on everybody". I have a size "D" chest. A tube top looks a lot more...suggestive...on me than it would on someone with a size "A" chest. I don't even wear tube tops without a shirt on my shoulders or something. It could be that his wife looked a little more...street than sweet(lol)...if you know what I mean. I probably would have gone OFF on the CM and reported her but I would have taken the tee shirt. Some folks just don't know how to talk to people. I understand the OP's disdain. It's like adding insult to injury.

asn't trying to lump them all together, just pointing out that not all cm know the policies. Also, this policy doesn't really define "proper attire."

Maybe they should change it to “common sense”?

The last time I looked, WDW was located in America. I find that inexcusable that WDW told the lady to change her top and put more clothes on.

The last time I looked, WDW was a private company doing business in America, and is entitled to make and enforce any rules it chooses as long as they don’t violate city/state/federal laws.


To the posters who are asking why the OP went to Guest Relations at Epcot: After rereading (and re-rereading) the original post, it appears that the incident occurred when they were boarding the Friendship Boat outside the International Gateway with the intention of heading to MGM. But I’ve been wrong before. I don’t think I am this time, but I could be wrong about that, too

I am a guy who is a big guy. I am 5"11 and weigh 270. Why are women the only ones being dragged thru the mud here. I have seen just as many men at WDW walking around shirtless in the heat and nothing is said by CM's, I have seen men in shirts way to small and there bellies hanging out. Its just a fact of life people come in all shapes,sizes and colors. If a guys bellie is showing should he be told to change???? If they feel comfortable enough with their bodies to allow this so be it. As long as the appropriate areas are covered. I don't have to look at it I can turn my head, walk the other way etc. I personally think big or small there is definately size appropriate clothing. I always wear a shirt with sleeves and shorts that come to the knee. I have to go now and refill my mug from last year and go pool hopping,........

Do you have a picture of what she was wearing? I mean, some of us, who are more endowed than others, may look a bit more inappropriate in a tank top than others.

I do agree that the CM at the gate was rude and I would ask to see a dress code.

Hmmm - if it were MY birthday, I'd just accept that free T-Shirt as a birthday present and get on with my life, go into the park and have fun!

As much as I love cute little tops, I'll know simply be a good guest and obey kindly rather than have a hissy fit.

Your top, seems fine. You are not "falling" or showing off some things that may be indecent. I was commenting on how I have seen a good many woman showing off a little more than they should because of their size. It was as if they chose to wear those kinds of clothes just to show off what they "got" and thinking they are cute.
(Which is whole lot squeezed into what seems like size 12 children's colthing)

Just to add in:
I have taken a good many trips to Disney - even wearing some "revealing" things, I had a shirt that was a string halter and tied in the back ... that's it. No one ever said anything to me either.

My DH and I were a couple of weeks ago and he said he saw a shirt with the "F" word on it. He didn't point it out at the time but this thread brought it out in conversation.

WDW needs to be more consistent when it comes to enforcing dress code issues.

That was obviously not.

On the same note I saw a shirt that said, "Rehab is for quitters." What kind of message does that send?

And how about, "Watch out, I have a bad attitude", to which I respond, "Hey, man, you're at MK, drop the bad attitude!"

I don't need a civic's class to know what's right and what's wrong. Also, this customer of WDW, in my opinion, was harassed.

Prior to booking a trip, WDW should outline the clothing that is allowed and not allowed and don't be generic.

Ah, once again someone fell asleep in Civics class, I see.

Because it is America, and because WDW is Private Property, we can pretty much enforce any dress code we like, as long as it's not discriminatory. Your rights end where our rights begin and we have the right to limit what we will allow people to wear -- or not wear -- at our business, conducted on our property.

I will also remind you that neither you nor I know how exactly the guest was dressed, as the OP has neglected to post a photograph of his wife -- and judging from the range of responses and villification here, I can't say I blame him.

I went to the Halloween party last year and I think I saw about 2000 Jack Sparrows. Of course there were big Jacks, little Jacks, fat Jacks, skinny Jacks, and maybe one or two of them resembled the "real" Jack. I haven't seen that much eyeliner on men since La Cage Aux Folles.

I guess Halloween is the exception.

Halloween in an exception. You will see people of all ages dressed up. They do ask that you don't wear a full face mask, an offensive costume, and a few other rules - just FYI.

Yet had it had spaghetti straps, it would probably have been considered acceptable. That's so strange to me. I'm a very modest person - even during the summer I'm walking around in jeans like an idiot because I prefer being covered up - HOWEVER, I can't imagine a tube top not being allowed at a theme park! And I can't believe people are saying they shouldn't be allowed. People are trying to stay cool and comfortable in the parks, and the best way to do so is by wearing tank tops, tube tops, and other sleeveless attire. Even though I normally don't wear things like that, you better believe I'll be in shorts and tank tops every day (I don't own any tube tops).

For those of you who think women wearing sleeveless tops are "harmful" to a family environment... we've been to topless beaches before with our young children, and they didn't think ANYTHING of it. They played and we had a nice family time together despite the presence of bare breasts and revealing bikinis. So I hardly think a woman in a tube top is going to scar my children for life.

It seems the puritanical tide is coming in once again in our society, and people are getting more and more uptight about things like this -and it's really a shame.

Amen, sister. When I see anyone who is dressed in more revealing clothing, I worry about their impending sunburn, not whether I should be offended. I'm also usually resentful that the bikini-wearers look better than I do.

And I would be very curious as to what the poster who objects to heavy women in tube tops would like them to wear. Muumus? Sweatsuits? A sign that says "I'm sorry my size offends you?" What garbage. It's 9000 degrees in Florida. Wear what won't give you heatstroke.

Well, it's been my profile picture for a long time now, and I've never actually shown the full size picture in any of my posts (profile picture to the left). Since this thread was about tube tops, I thought the picture would be appropriate to show that it's not really revealing much, and there are much worse things out there. Also, that people wear these tops all the time and never have anything said to them, it's not like it's a bikini top.

That being said, without actually seeing what his wife was wearing, it's kind of hard to judge. If it was nothing more than a basic tube top, than yea, I think the cast member was way out of line, and I would have gone to management for sure. That's just embarassing and uncalled for. However, if it was your basic tube top AND there was a V cut down the middle and no sides to it, than yea, the cast member probably made the right call. At this point, it's just speculation.

Oh yea, and I was showing off my hot wife too. Hey, we just got married, let me do it while I can! lol

I contend you do, in fact, need a Civics class when you begin saying "Last time I checked, WDW was in America!" This implies that you felt the guest's rights as an American citizen were unlawfully infringed by WDW. They were not. You can say it's your opinion the guest was harassed, and I will continue to counterargue that you -- and I, both -- are in no position to have an opinion that counts for squat without seeing what the guest was wearing.

That said... I agree with you 100% that WDW needs to be more consistent in enforcing policy.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but just wanted to throw out the other side of the "Local" coin. I have lived in Florida (Clearwater and Orlando) since 1982 and Hubby has been here in Orlando since 1999. I don't even think either of us owns a pair of shorts. We always joke about how you can spot the locals because they are the ones wearing jeans in the middle of August because locals are use to the heat. I am fairly average height and weight, so it is not like I wear pants to be conservative, I am just more comfortable in jeans and a nice top. I just think it is funny as I would look at someone that was in shorts and a tank top as a tourist and those in jeans and a tee shirt when it is 98 degrees out as the locals...

I too am a local, have lived here all but the first five years of my life, and I tend to wear jeans, capris, or pants regardless of the time of year. My dh on the other-hand will wear shorts any day of the year. Just depends on what you are comfortable with. You can usually tell the tourists by how red their skin is or if they are applying sunscreen as they are walking whereas most locals have either already scorched their skin so they don't wear sunscreen or they put it on before leaving the house and testing just how hot that sun really is.

First off - Wow. With all of the snarky comments that have already been made, I don't blame the OP at all for not coming back to this thread. He was telling a story from his perspective. No matter what his wife was wearing, the CM's comment was unprofessional and rude.

That said, I'd have been furious at the CM and at the way the supervisor handled the situation, not at Disney as a whole. I agree that they *do* have the right to enforce a dress code - absolutely. But that dress code should be posted clearly and enforced consistently so as to spare Disney's customers possible inconvenience and/or embarrassment.

Now, what *does* make me reconsider WDW is the plethora of judgemental and discourteous comments that have been made on this board - anywhere from calling tube tops "pornographic" (what!?) to irrelevant speculation on the possible weight of the OP's wife. As compared to so many of the wonderful threads and helpful comments that are made elsewhere on the DIS, I'm really, really surprised at the rudeness level on this particular thread. Where did the friendliness go??? Even if we don't agree with OP, we can at say nothing if we have nothing nice to say. (Isn't that what children are taught from a small age???) If this is a representation of the people who visit Disney, then I'm depressed! But then again, maybe my expectations are a little high.

After all of the judgemental comments, can we really expect OP to post a *picture* of his wife in a tube top!? LOL! I don't think so. I don't think we can expect OP to come back to this thread at all.

Of course, some of you have made very gracious and sympathetic comments in defense of the OP (e.g. Liberty Belle, Susan 555, and many others). *phew* Thanks for that, guys! I was almost losing faith in humanity (or the DIS at least) there for a while.

Lastly, I think that the most hilarious part of all of this is the posters who are ranting about the immodesty of tube tops. Have you seen Tinkerbell? What about Pocahontas? How would you describe their very strapless attire??? And have you checked out Belle's famous yellow ball gown? How much more bust can you show without being NC17?

I'm teasing, of course. I love Belle's gown but you know what I'm getting at. At least, you should.

The fact is, if total modesty is so extremely important to you then perhaps you should reconsider Disney as your entertainment company of choice!
