is there a dress code for kids? ds (11yo) doesn't own "fancy" clothes (or even a shirt w/a collar... at least not that fits him)... would he be okay in plaid bermuda shorts and a plain solid coordinating tee shirt?

also, dd (13yo) has some "decent" capris and bermuda shorts... would they be okay for her?

dh will wear his good khakis and a button down or golf shirt (is that okay?) and i'm planning to wear a fancy-ish blouse and some dressy capris (is that okay?)

looking forward to advice... thanks!

You could put your ds in shorts and a t-shirt, and he'll be fine.

My ds (14) usually wears a polo shirt and a pair of pants/shorts. Personally, I'd think about getting a polo shirt for your son. It's not so dressy that he'll never have occassion to wear it again, and it's comfortable enough to wear in the parks after dinner. It may just be where we live/lived, but most of the boys we know where polo shirts on a regular basis.

unfortunately, he would sooner die than wear a polo shirt or any shirt w/a collar... he's only done so for weddings and funerals... and even then unhappily... but he would likely do so for disney (but i hate to invest in a shirt that he's only going to wear twice!)

Dress code applies to all not just to those over 18. Still they won't kick you out.

My son wore a polo shirt and shorts to both in July, but I wouldn't go out and buy something he won't wear again. I'd feel very comfortable with a nice looking t-shirt and shorts for my son at either place...:)

He will be fine. Dress code allows for tee's as long as there are no offensive graphics or sayings on them.

Can you wear like a nice top with a nice pair of jeans?

what exactly is the dress code? (i guess that's the basic question)
i was told no bathing suits, tank tops, cut-off shorts and ___ (something else but cannot remember what) which i thought was a bit "loose" for those two places... which is why i come to the real source... the DISBOARDS! :rotfl:

Here is what is listed on the Disney World website:

Dress Code Guidelines:

Men: Khakis, slacks, jeans, dress shorts, collared shirts. Sport coats are optional.
Ladies: Capris, skirts, dresses, jeans, dress shorts.

NOT permitted in dining room: Tank tops, swimwear, hats for gentleman, cut offs, or torn clothing. While t-shirts are now allowed, the policy remains that t-shirts with offensive language and/or graphics are not acceptable.

shorts and plain t shirt would work, but the polo or button down would be even better. Our 5yo wore white sneakers, khaki shorts and a short sleeved plaid button down. He was comfortable and "dressed" up.

Maybe take him to the store and let him pick. This a great time to shop for summer clothes so it shouldn't set you back too much. The look of a button down over a tee is common (he doesn't have to button the shirt), so maybe you can work that angle. Many think girls have the fashion "issues". Even at 6 my nephew has his own ideas. Last weekend it was fatigue shorts and a completly clashing tee shirt. We eventually made a change but there were a whole lot of tears in the process. :rolleyes1 I even got a report they had to wait for him to change from his Hulk outfit to a Batman one on his first day of 1st grade this past week. :rotfl2:

letting him shop/choose his own won't help... he has sensory issues since birth and collared shirts drive him to distraction... if i didn't think he could wear a plain teeshirt (which everyone is saying that he can), i would consider canceling the reservation rather than have him be miserable on vacation! (and ruining our meal anyway!)

Your son will be absolutely fine wearing bermuda shorts or jeans and a nice solid colored t-shirt. The dress code is NEVER enforced and people show up looking horrible. Your son will actually looked dressed up compared to some. We were eating at California Grill one time and the people next to us had cutoffs on, their bathing suit tops, and a thin tshirt over top. They obviously came straight from the pool. It was funny for my hubby and I as it provided us with some entertaining dinner conversation.:rolleyes1

Before I get yelled at, I am not advocating not adhering to the dress code but simply saying that adhering to it at the more casual level is not inappropriate. :lovestruc

thanks all! i am sure from all the responses that we'll be fine (and happy and well fed!) :)

You will be definitely be fine. DS7 practically had a breakdown that he had to wear a shirt with a collar but finally gave in. I felt terrible for putting him through that when I saw how underdressed people were. Even adults came in wearing jean shorts, t-shirts and sneakers.

The food was excellent, though, and the sunset was spectacular! Be sure to stay and watch the fireworks!

So funny you should mention the above. We went through the same argument with our ds7. Long khaki pants and a collared shirt and nicer shoes. We were going to the park so he had to wear that there. When we got to the restaurant he saw what others were wearing and was rightfully pissy about how underdressed people were.

So to answer the OP's question- your son will be more than fine in nice shorts and a plain t.

Bermuda shorts and a plain tee shirt are not against the Disney dress code for any restaurant save Victoria & Albert's.

Thanks for the info. I would love to have a dress up night, but it is our arrival day...and i do not want to worry about when our luggage will arrive or staying close to the hotel to change. So, we will be in the same clothes all day.
