Dress code @ California Grill?

It is ok to share. I rarely do it, sometimes my wife and I will share a dessert. I love to eat. So sharing does not appeal to me too much. At any rate it is not cheap to share, just enjoy yourself. Merry Christmas

CG is one of the two restaurants on-site that has consistently had a dress code in recent years. They're usually very good about letting folks know it when they make PS. The dress code is typically expressed as, "No tank-tops," but I've heard them relay it as "casual-neat" at times.

They also say "no tank tops" for Bistro de Paris when you make the PS. Or at least they said it to me. Maybe I just sounded like a tank top wearer?

Also, at Shula's, I noticed on the menu outside of the door it said either "Business Casual" or "Resort Casual". Can't remember which, but it definitely was on there. Now, they didn't say anything about it when I made the reservation, and I did see at least one guy with a t-shirt, so I guess its either not official or just not enforced.

I believe last time I made a reservation they did say either no tank tops or no tee-shirts....not sure which.

While it's true that you can come very casual (i.e., sloppy) and still get in, it's appreciated by most folks if you could clean up just a bit to the resort casual level. It is a very nice restaurant and has a lot of business convention folks as well families.

Heck, they make you wear a shirt with a collar to play golf at WDW.....I'd think they could have that minimum in the better restaurants.

The other day, I called to change my PS time for CG. This time, the CM did explain that they appreciate it if guests dress in a "resort casual" way. Then she briefly explained that this means neat shorts, khaki pants, golf shirt, etc.,etc., etc. is most appropriate. She was very nice.

If these codes are "enforceable", rarely will you see them "enforced". These restaurants simply cannot afford to turn away any paying customers, unless what the people are wearing is SO off the wall that it would offend the basic sensibility of almost everyone. And even then they would probably try their best not to turn you away.
I'm pleased to see the WDW restaurants having this sort of policy. They know that there are lots of folks like Uncleromulus who appreciate the chance NOT to have to dress up just to go and get a meal. Heck--I can dress up at home. In fact, it's XMAS Eve and I'm dressing up for dinner tonight at the Accomac Inn. But why would I want to do that at WDW, where casual and comfortable (and neat, of course) is the name of the game??

Why are you dressing up for Christmas Eve? Maybe it's because you are going to a nice restaurant to celebrate with your family and it feels right to do that. People at WDW are also celebrating different things....anniversaries, birthdays, recovery from illness, getting together with family in the face of illness, etc. and they like to have some restaurants where they can go and feel special....not just eating a meal in-between park runs. There are all kinds of places to eat at WDW. An in-park restaurant, even those at Epcot, should welcome folks in just about any legal attire. A minimum dress code in the upscale hotel restaurants wouldn't be an undue hardship on anyone and provides a different atmosphere for those who are seeking that as part of their vacation experience.

Enforcing these codes in some of the restaurants could actually bring more lucrative business. Many organizations would not hold their conventions somewhere that did not provide places where they could hold business dinners in a nice atmosphere.

I really don't think people have to be "dressed up" to show proper respect for the environment they are in at a WDW restaurant. In fact, I would much rather see well mannered people in shorts and polos than the group of loud, obnoxious, drunken conventioneers (who were dressed in slacks, dress shirts, and sport coats) we had to deal with the last time we were there. Granted, they were probably the most appropriately dressed group in the entire restaurant, but they acted the least appropriately, IMHO.

However, I do think the basic requirements of "resort casual" should be met--no tank tops, no swimsuits, no flipflops, no cutoffs. All this is JMHO, of course!

Amy, I agree that clothes don't necessarily make the group. And I'm not asking people to wear sport jackets. All I would like to see is people who shower if they've spent the last 12 hours in 90+ heat and put on a clean polo shirt and khakis (or even dress shorts). Just try to look like you are going to a nice place and not the city dump after cleaning the garage. It probably is hard for WDW to enforce such a policy. That's why I'm thinking the "golf course" rules might apply....no collarless shirts and no short shorts. That's not putting undue pressure on anyone to pack for WDW. If you've got the minimum of "resort casual" then others won't feel out of place if they do feel like dressing up and don't feel like V&A's is the only place to do that.

Pa@okw95: Sorry, I just realized that the reason I could not figure out how you spent as much as you did was because being florida residents, we use our disney dining and entertainment discount card which gives us a 20% discount on the entire bill. That's actually one of the big reasons it does'nt cost us as much. Happy new year!

Wow!! Fortunate for me that Disney sets the "dress codes" and not you guys!!
OH--I dressed up XMAS eve because I wanted to--just as anyone can dress now at any WDW restaurant. Last nite most folks were dressed up. But some weren't--including a couple in jogging suits!! Did it bother me? Did I attempt to get them tossed out?? DId I request a table where I couldn't see them??? Did I vow never to return??? Did I flatten the tires on their car in protest?????
NO!!
They ate quietly--we ate quietly and we all had a fine dinner.
And while I'm at it--it was snowing and ice/raining out last nite. Guess which couple had an easier time getting to and from their car---.
