dreading going bathing suit shopping with 12yr old daughter

I have a different problem with my daughter. She just turned 14 a few weeks ago, and she looks at least 19-20 yrs. old. She's 5'7", and 128 lbs with very long legs. She is also slightly short-waisted so that none of the one-piece suits fit her properly, Somehow she has got it in her head that she needs a very tiny bikini to "fit in" with her friends. Most of the tops are ok on her, since she's really not large busted (34B), but the bottoms are positively obscene! They are very low in the front, and very high cut on the legs, and her legs are really long to begin with. We have tried swimsuits on in every store that you can think of, and it always ends in a shouting/crying match. She won't consider anything from Lands End, and I won't consider anything with a tiny bottom. She is determined not to have a tankini this year either. I am completely frustrated with her, and if this keeps up she won't be swimming this year at all.

Jill, I don't have daughters, so I really shouldn't be butting in here, but in defense of your daughter....

Your daughter sounds like she was built exactly like I was at her age -- trust me, tall girls do NOT want to look like Quasimodo in a one piece! NOT a good look, LOL!

Tall skinny girls that are not large up top look best in bikinis. I know you'd probably not prefer her wear one, but I had this argument with my mother for so many years and I had such DRAMA with bathing suits, I hope you reconsider. :p :)

Snoopy, I appreciate your input :D Unfortunately for me, I've never been tall and long legged, she's definitely built like my husband and not me!

It's not a bikini that I object to per se, it's the really SKIMPY ones I can't deal with. Surely there is a bikini out there with a little more coverage. She's my oldest and all of this is new territory for me. We were waiting in line at a Subway sandwich shop the other day and I saw a group of grown men in their 30's eyeing her up and down and making comments to each other about her. I swear I wanted to go poke their eyes out for staring at my daughter! I guess I need to get used to it, but it's tough. I still think of her as my little baby, even though she's2 inches taller than me!

Jeafl- I know what you mean about the skimpy bottoms. Even on short girls they show way too much. And I really hate the suits that are only held together with a few strings, on the sides of the bottoms and in the back of the top. All it would take would be one pull of a string from some smart aleck boy running by, as a previous post already said. Of course, I'd be chasing the hoodlum with a sharp implement. :)

My DD is 14, but looks older. We have this same problem every year with trying to find a swimsuit. This year she has gained a little weighed and is so frustrated at herself. Nothing looks right. She's only 4' 11.5" and weighs about 140. She is also big chested which doesn't help matters. She refuses to wear a one piece and looks at the tankinis, but they aren't ven working for her this year. Last year she wouldn't even get a suit and didn't even swim on her first trip to Disney. It' s sad to see her and other kids worry so much about weight issues and the way they look.
