Cast:
Me- 23 year old Disney "freak"
Grumpy- my "much older" DBF (together nearly 2 years)
Why the trip?
I decided to plan a trip to Disney as a Graduation Celebration for finishing up my graduate program. I badly needed something to look forward to (16 months of Hell), and a Disney trip was just the trick.
Why bring Grumpy along?
Grumpy had NEVER been to Disney. He hates children, hates rides, hates fireworks, hates walking and doesn't show emotion. He really is a good guy though. However, as you can start to tell, we are very much opposites
Obsessive, Compulsive, Planning
180 days out I make the ADRs. I book the hotel, the flights, the rental car. I get the budget as low as possible (I don't have an income yet). I have spreadsheets for everything. My spreadsheets have spreadsheets. Grumpy wants no part in the planning, "You know best, I just want to show up" he repeats constantly.
Best part of all, I finish my thesis, pack up the apartment and move back home. Count down to January 2nd!
Trouble Starts
Grumpy comes down with a cold the day before Christmas. I spend as little time as possible with him. However, my immune system is shot and by 12/28, I was running a high fever and sick for 3 days. Luckily I felt 90% better by the trip!
1/2/08-
5:45am
Grumpy is supposed to show up at my house at 5:45am so my mom could drive us to the airport (isn't that nice of her?
). However, he shows up 10 minutes late and we drive the 20 min. to the airport. That little detail is important because Southwest customer service suddenly went down the drain (unusual for them). There was ONE person checking all the luggage for Southwest. So with tears running down my cheeks and Grumpy still sleepy and frustrated, they call "final boarding" for our plane while we are still checking our bags. Running through the airport and through security (small airport) I made it but Grumpy wasn't in sight. Of course his jeans had too much metal on them and they set the detector off. He had to be wanded. I wanted to strangle him.
We made the flight with literally no time to spare- they pulled away from the gate as soon as Grumpy was seated. It was not a good way to start a vacation.
10:30am
At the airport, one of my bags showed up. The other two didn't make it. Southwest wants us to pay them $20 a bag to deliver the bags to the resort. I send Grumpy to the rental car (National) and I take Magical Express. I had no intention of paying them anything for the trouble they caused earlier and I was not going to spend the day waiting around for 2 suitcases!
12pm
Finally on our way, time flew by quickly. We checked in at Coronado Springs where I am welcomed by a wonderful cast member. He provides me with 5 First Timer pins for Grumpy. 1 for Grumpy to wear and the rest were extras for when Grumpy threw it out behind my back. I was surprised Grumpy wore the pin willingly and kept it on the whole trip! Maybe I could change Grumpy a bit
Next up: Can we salvage the day?
