Can I wear these on a plane since they have a gel insert?

No.

If the gel insert can be removed, that part may be put in checked baggage (not a carry-on) and you can wear the shoe itself minus that part.

Wow. I didn't think of that. I was really looking at these shoes the other day and overall they are really comfortable for a $20-$25 shoe. There are about 8 styles for men as well. With Wal-Mart starting to sell these I wonder how often the TSA is going to be running into this? I imagine 100,000's are selling at that price and really this is the first time liquid gel is in every version of the brand.

I can just see over the next month how many complaints there will be as these waves of Wal-Mart shoppers go traveling over the summer.

I think this is one of those, sometimes it will be fine, sometimes you will run into an issue (similar to my 3-1-1 bag not being compliant - see other thread). You just have to make a decision if its worth the hassle if they will not let you through (and they don't have to), or make you throw them away or retrieve your checked luggage and store them.

I had some brand new ones in my carry-on and the TSA took them away from me at Houston Hobby. Maybe if I had been wearing them I might have got to keep them because TSA may not have wanted to touch them.

It never crossed my mind when I went back in November and there was no mention of it either going down or coming back.

And they saved my feet. I had absolutely no blisters at all this trip.

Check the TSA website. My DH wears them in all his shoes and has never had a problem. Kind of weird that you can't carry them but....I'm sure they have their reasons..... Maybe they are not supposed to let him wear them????
