Dr. said no Disney :(

This is how we apply judgement when weighing risk. There is no other way.
Better worded, then, would be to say that we cannot look at this as a matter of "overall odds" or "in the aggregate chances". Go back to the car accident versus struck by lightning example. "Overall odds" says that you are more likely to be involved in a car accident. The minute you hold a metal rod in a field during a lightning storm, that changes. My odds of contracting malaria are "x". My odds of contracting malaria while traveling up the Amazon go up. My odds of contracting Zika in my backyard are "x". My odds of contracting Zika at WDW go up.

Agreed, but your odds of contracting Zika while using bug spray at WDW are probably still much, much lower than your odds of getting into a car accident driving around your home town. I stress the word probably because it is a relative unknown. We know what the risks of getting into a car accident are. We are less certain of the WDW Zika risks. But what we KNOW is that there have been zero reported cases of someone getting Zika at WDW.

I'd still go. Might as well not leave the house if it's that much caution. That's just me though.

Guess the hundreds of pregnant women that go to Disney a day have uninformed doctors.

Yikes! I just wanted to come back and apologize - I certainly did not mean for this to turn into some huge debate, nor did I feel the need to really go in depth when explaining - I was merely just venting my disappointment since we obviously decided not to go.

We are huge travelers, and since getting pregnant I've been asking our doctors office about everything (although I didn't feel the need to ask about Disney since like most of you I thought no big seal because it's not being locally transmitted). We just got back from Hawaii and I asked about that too. In fact, we found out our plane was previously coming from Brazil and the doctor advised us to switch planes, so we did. I've seen flies and mosquitos on planes before and honestly, it was just no big deal for us to change flights. Overly cautious? Yes. But I guess that's where I'm falling into. Once hearing what the doctor said about Disney I called another one in the practice who I've been seeing for years (prior to getting pregnant as my gyno but he doesn't do on), we get along really well partly because he does food and wine every year. He was honest in saying they just don't know, but the office is advising against it. Yes, I'm in NY and there are a lot of foreigners here as well, and yes I'm still going outside. That's just silly. Purposefully being in lines and confined spaces is a little different than merely going outside. Honestly if we said Ft. Lauderdale I'm sure the dr would've had no problem with it. I've seen many tour groups, especially from Brazil (the mecca of zika right now) and even in Disney I've gotten bitten before. It's rare and unlikely that the perfect storm will happen, but at the end of the day, after being explained that and knowing what can happen to the fetus in the off chance it should happen, it's just not something I'm willing to risk. For a vacation. It's not a life or death trip. We go every year, and while I'm extremely bummed because I was looking forward to it, I get the reasons behind it.

I'm not going to get another opinion from a different dr or anyone else. When youre pregnant, at least at this office, you see an ob for everything. I'm not going to search around until I get the opinion I WANT to hear. If I'm not going to take the dr's advise, who is certainly more qualified than me in pregnancy, then why bother going to one?

Anyway, again, this wasn't meant to be turned into a big debate. Now going back to just being bummed out...

I just read on a news site that Government officials are warning congress that Zika is more of a risk that what many believe and that the areas at most risk are Brazil, Puerto Rico and Florida. Hmmmmmm....

I guess there are areas that are of higher risk after all... Like Florida. Some seemed quite certain that wasn't the case.

Lots of opinions by lots of people but looks like if you are pregnant maybe being cautious is the best thing right now. Unless the Government is full of it.. And that's a debate for another time and place. Haha.

As far as this turning into a big debate.. Why would anyone be surprised by that? Lots of highly opinionated people on this forum that could turn a thread about snow cones into a heated discussion. Lol.
It what makes this fun...

Very sorry to hear that your trip won't work out.
My wife is 18 weeks pregnant and we are leaving for Disney in a few days so I have been closely following this topic. My wife told her OB at her last visit and he just said have fun. We just got back from the ultrasound today and she reminded him we are leaving in a few days and he just reminded her about sunscreen, staying hydrated and since we are driving from Michigan to take frequent breaks and walk around on the trip down and back.
All doctors have their own opinions just like everyone else, just because they are an MD doesn't mean they know everything. The really good ones realize this. We have lots of experience with doctors, I've lived in a hospital for months due to my daughters heart condition (she's doing great, you would not even know she has one now) so I've talked with hundreds of doctors. We have had very bad and absolutely fantastic.
With all that in mind my wife said even though she thinks it's an overreaction for your dr to say that, she would have trouble enjoying her vacation with that in the back of her mind the whole time

Ugh - jealous!!! Have so much fun!!! Yeah, it would just be in the back of my mind and I don't think I'd have a good time. I'd freak out every bite I got( and I always get them). Totally sucks because if he didn't say anything I would've never thought twice about it! But he did.. And now here we are haha!!! Hope you have a blast!!!

It's okay op, be disappointed. It stinks. But think of how incredibly lucky you are to be pregnant when so manyt struggle!!!

I would do the same in your shoes, I would NEVER forgive myself if I went against dr. orders and contracted the virus. Not worth it IMO. Just dream of the day you get to go as a family!!!

Just a hug. When things don't work out the way you want, just enjoy life as it is. The best part, WDW will most likely always be there, and memories can be made there when you are ready to visit. Trust in a doctor is important. If some of the other doctors in the OBGYN group had their way, instead of the doctor I wanted to have help deliver my DS, delivery would have been much different. You're allowed to be sad and vent. And, a big congratulations. Sending wishes for a happy and healthy mom and baby.

Yes, that's funny! But so is saying that most doctors were below average students! I can't stop laughing over that one! :rotfl2:
I could understand someone saying doctors are very well versed in their profession, but lack knowledge about some "normal" subjects (thus appear to lack common sense)

You're not alone OP. DH and I are trying to have a baby and we have a trip to WDW planned for September. If I conceive before our trip, we will cancel. It's not worth the risk. Disney will be there for our (and your) next trip. <3

My odds of contracting Zika in my backyard are "x". My odds of contracting Zika at WDW go up.

I don't believe that's true because WDW utilizes mosquito management techniques on their property that the average person doesn't.

Clearly no stats back this up, but I can say anecdotally that I personally have been feasted upon more by mosquitos in my area than ever in WDW. In fact I can't really remember being bitten by mosquitoes on any WDW trip over the years, and I have read multiple posters here who have said the same thing.

So then what now? Stay inside 24/7? Honestly wondering here. What can someone do?
Keeping in mind no cases of it contracted within the US, all were exposed elsewhere and returned with it here

I have limited how much time I am spending outside. Normally in the evenings I would go sit outside after we put our son down and just talk...Im not doing that this year. If I wasn't pregnant I would be just like everyone else on here..Oh it won't get me...I'll be fine. But with a pregnancy I am a little more concerned.

And those who are saying the doc is wrong and all is it bothering you that she isn't going...I mean is it really bothering you all that you can't eat, sleep its always on your mind....probably not. So why keep harping on that the women isn't going and all. Here in MD they are going to start testing mosquito's. They will catch them and test them...and until that report comes out yes I will keep limiting my outside time. And I am OK with that. Plus this damn hot humid weather is getting to me faster than it normally would.

I don't think anyone is really harping or giving OP a hard time. Pretty much everyone has agreed that OP is making the correct decision for herself, even if it's not the same decision others would have made. However the fearmongering and misinformation/skewed facts really don't do anyone any good either. Knowledge is power.

In the past 10 years we have spent the following days in Disney and stayed at their resorts
10 days Saratoga Springs
9 days Coronado Springs
13 days Caribbean Beach
14 days Pop Century
15 days Pop Century
61 days at Disney Resorts. All during June July or August. During that time we have spent an additional 14 days at Disney Parks but we were staying somewhere else so...
75 days at Disney in the past 10 years and I have been bitten by ZERO mosquitos!!
Here in Michigan we had a camp fire a couple days ago and I got bitten 7 times while sitting around the fire for about 2 hours.
My relatives live in Plant City Florida and I get bitten every time we go there, but never in Disney.
Also, we are night people and are always either at a park until it closes or at a pool until it closes. So yeah, I would say Disney has pest control down pretty good...
