Has anyone read it? Has anyone followed/tried to follow his program?

I need to lose weight and I've tried Weight Watchers, I've tried counting calories, and I've tried to avoid the kitchen!! Nothing has worked. So before I buy the book I wanted to get some feed back from those who have tried it so I can see if it really works or not.

Thanks,
tara

Well, I bought the book and there is sits unread  . So, I'm sorry I am of no help. I'm a WW fan and have had the most success with that program in the past, since there are no specific limitations. Just learning to eat proper portions. Right now with me the problem is motivation. I don't have it, wish I could find it. Anyone seen it???? :teeth: Good luck Tara on finding a program that fits you.

I am heavy too, I have a friend whom I work out with who is a Physical Therapist, and he just did a continuing education course update on all of the latest in diets. WW is the best. It is reasonable and has the built in support system. The Dr. Phil book is also good because he didn't write it. (My friend hates Dr. Phil) The book was written by several dietitians who actually understand how diets work. The problem with many of the Fad Diets out there are that they starve something to get you to loose the weight. After you finish the diet Most people go back to their old way of eating and because of the way the body works (to store fat for times of famine) you actually gain more weight back!!!!!

The best way to loose weight is slowly by making better food choices with exercise.

Also, there are a lot of people who see themselves as FAT who AREN'T......OK I'll get off my soap-box.

Dr. Phil's Diet is supposedly good.

:bounce:

I have also found my greatest success on WW. With many changes in my life in the last few months, I have realized I am a stress eater. I have made a commitment to take a deep breath before just eating what ever is available. Good luck to you!!

never buy a diet book from a fat guy

Well, Dr. Phil is not fat...He's actually just a large man who is very fit. But, the main problem I've heard about his diet book is that is focuses more on the psychological part and is very short on actual nutrition advice. I subscribe regularly to Shape and Fitness and they both rated it very low.

However, I have to say honestly and bluntly, that I just don't get is when someone says "I've tried everything and nothing works." I find that impossible to believe. Eat healthy foods, eat less, and exercise a lot more...How can that not work? I think the problem is most of America has been brainwashed into thinking they need a fancy program to help them lose weight when really common sense and good old fashioned healthy eating will do it. No program in the world is going to help a person stop putting fork to mouth...That has to come from within a person.

RM thanks for bumping this so that it gets some attention!! Maybe we could swap the book! heheheh

Ohana...you are right there are plenty of people who are not heavy but think they are. For me, I have a vision of myself that I would like to return to. That is the pre children, post college size that changed after entering the "real" world. My dr. only wants to see me lose 20 pounds (that would put me at 160), I want to lose a little more! I figured Dr. Phil couldn't write the whole thing since he not a nutritionist.

Suzannews...I did WW and did really well for the time I was on it, but then I got lazy about county the points. I also have a hard time getting to meetings, I know I could if I would plan a little better...but I'm thinking about trying to put the energy into finding time to get to a gym like curves.

Disney01...I'm glad that losing weight and maintaining weight is easy for you. Unfortunately not everyone is capable of doing it themselves. I like the idea of Dr. Phil's book helping to understand the psychological aspect of why we eat and why it is difficult for others to lose weight. And to be quite honest...as a teenager I screwed up my metabolism by refusing to eat. I was actually threatened several times with being put in the hospital for an eating disorder...Anorexia. Now my metablism also faces my age (33) so it is very difficult to lose weight. I certainly don't want to stop "putting fork to mouth"...but I do want to improve what I put on that fork.

Since I see Dr. Phil in person all the time I have a hard time taking advice from him about my big butt ::yes:: Nice man . ...
I have nothing but kind words for him . But he is on the hefty side

Get off your high horse. No **** America has a problem with portion control. I don't think Tara needed you pointing that out to her. She was asking a simple question...and she stated that what she has already tried has not worked, so she's looking for something new! hmph

Tara  I know what it's like. This is actually my second time trying Weight Watchers and thankfully I have a better mind set about it this time. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you're able to find something that's right for you.

Actually, I'm not on a "high horse". And it's not easy...but it's also not necessary to subscribe to an expensive, "catchy" program. That's what America has bought into..."What program works best." It's not a program...It's healthy eating and exercise. It's not always easy or fun, but it's also common sense. Dr. Phil's book is good for the psychological aspects of weight control...Not so good for actual nutrition and portion control, exercise, etc.

I did a search over at the WISH forum for Dr. Phil. I remember there were some using that when it first came out. There were several comments on it at the time. I don't know if there is anyone still following this program there. This will link you with one thread. I hope this may be helpful to get you started.

Good luck in you quest to become healthier.

I bought Dr. Phil's book and the South Beach Diet book at around the same time earlier this year. I read some of Dr. Phil's book, but did not get beyond the self tests early on. I just read the South Beach Diet and am anticipating starting on 7/19. South Beach looks very workable. Got a lot of info/insight reading the South Beach thread over on the WISH board. Good luck to us both.

While I haven't bought Dr. Phill's weight loss book, I do watch his program on t.v. all the time. His book isn't a "diet book", it's a life style change. He trys to lead people on a path to eat healthier all the time (and exercise on a regular schedule), not just for a few months until you've lost the weight. That's why most diets don't work! They tell you to eat healthy and exercise for a certain timeframe, and then go back to the lifestyle you were accostom to before dieting.

To accompany his book, he also has a cook book filled with tons of healthy receipes! Things you never thought you could eat while losing weight! Even if you don't want to lose weight, you could still enjoy the receipes from this cook book. Dr. Phil's wife Robin, cooked many dishes from this cook book on an episode of Dr. Phil. These were dishes that their family eats at home.

Remember that being healthy doesn't mean looking like a toothpick! Dr. Phil happens to be over 6 foot 7 inches tall, and he's very athletic.

In March my Mom started Dr. Phil's book since she wanted to lose about 20 lbs. I never thought she was overweight, but she felt like she needed to lose. And I guess we are in the minority, but we both like Dr. Phil...

Anyway, she has done amazing! She has lost alot of weight and looks great. She also bought the Total Gym and exercises on that and walks all the time.

I really think sometimes you just have to have your mind ready to do something like this. She was done feeling uncomfortable and was bound and determined to be healthier. She swears by this book.

Now if only I had time to go walking with her, since DS will NOT sit in his stroller long enough for me to go my minimum of 2 miles! ARGH!

I just want to jump in here and say that after not being able to lose weight at all no matter what I did - even with my doctor's help - he sent me to a wonderful endocrinologist and after blood work, it was determined that I have insulin resistance and hypo thyroidism. I was put on glucophage and synthroid and worked out everyday and ate a diet with lots of fruits and veggies and whole grains and I lost 40 lbs!!! It didn't come off fast but it did come off. Then last fall my sister passed away and my two yr old niece died unexpectedly!!! I went off my meds and ate what I wanted and stopped exercising and put back on 15 lbs very slowly but steadly. Then I decided to lose it again without the meds. I worked out and ate like I did before for three months and couldn't lose it again. So I did the bloodwork again last week and have an appt this week with the doctor to refill my meds. Sometimes it's more than exercise and diet. Lucky me!!!

heart4pooh...good luck to you on your tests. I hope things improve for you!:goodvibes
