Dr. Jones and the Spitting Camel - Link to Alaska Cruise TR 9/18

When I left you it was about 9 am and I was headed back to the WL. While in the cab I checked in with Jeff to see if anyone was up via text.

“Nope. No one up.”

“I’m on the balcony having coffee” Nice….

“Ok, can you wake them? They need to pack and get ready for photo’s.”

“Ok.”

“But we have a problem”

“What do you mean a problem?”

“Mom and Paul didn’t make the flight”

“So are they on standby for the next one?”

“No. They aren’t even at the airport yet.”

“Huh? Why not”

“Paul had to go to the hospital.”

WHAT???

Ok. You’d think he would have LED with that information.

I get on the phone, too much to type. I can’t get him as apparently his mother is getting him on the phone as well to update him

Finally I get through.

Turns out, at 4 in the morning (their ride to the airport was coming at 5:00)

Paul wakes up Sandie and says

“Honey, I think we need to go to the hospital”

OY.

As some of you may recall, Paul has gout. And it was giving him a LOT of trouble, mostly pain. We knew about the gout, and the high blood pressure and both Sandie and Paul had minimized it saying “Oh, he’ll just sit while we do stuff”. Ok…not terribly realistic but given that we learned about the gout maybe 1 week before the trip, not much we could do or say so we just decided to roll with it.

Apparently the pain was so bad, his meds so not working, he felt he needed to be seen so as to be able to have an ok vacation. And so off to the ER they went. And were still there at 9am EST as I headed back in my cab. Not really much we could do other than pray things were ok and they’d make it to the airport in time to catch one of the other flights. At this point it sounded like it was a pain management issue, they were getting it dealt with and chances were good to make a later flight. They weren't stressed at that point, so as a result, neither we we. Or at least we were trying hard to not be. The good news was that the kids knew they were on standby so it would be hours before they even realized they weren't there on time. We'd been pretty clear that the arrival time was an unknown and while we'd hoped they'd make it for dinner, it was possible they wouldn't. So we didn't need to say anything to the kids. And really, there wasn't much we could do other than go on with our day, keep our fingers crossed, hope they could help him, and wait for an update. And be really really glad I’d hedged our bets by “locking” up their room. Or at least hopefully locking it up. While I felt great about it, it is one of those things that until you see that connecting door unlocked….you don’t feel entirely secure that it’s “yours”.

All of this somehow had me now feeling a little behind the 8 ball. Kids had not only not gotten up yet, but still needed to pack. So did I for that matter. It didn’t need to be pretty but it all had to get squished in and stuff we needed for the day, set aside.

Still. I REALLY wanted to do the WL tour and raced into the lobby at 9:05 to find Ranger Joe with a family of 3.

The family of 3 couldn’t do a full hour tour and Ranger Joe offered to do a condensed 30 minute version, which worked perfectly for me! It wasn’t ideal but it sure as heck was better than no tour at all and gave me a little breathing room for packing, baggage movement and pictures.

And so he began.

He spends a lot of time discussing the building of WL, the lobby, the meanings of the totem poles, the fact that when they went to have the lodge blessed, the poles were facing each other directly and thus caused bad energy and had to be moved (slightly rotated). Can you imagine MOVING a huge totem pole after it was in? Even though they aren’t structural, wow!

But they did, move them. We were treated to a wonderful story of one of the poles that explains the placement of each animal and the story behind it.
My pictures are SO bad, just not set up for zoom in low light like that. UGH. But they do prove I was there. :rotfl:

Carvings. These really resemble the headboards in the rooms, pretty cool.

After the short version of the lobby, we headed over to the Villas

Joe showed us his favorite Hidden Mickey

Some real memorabilia of Walt’s. Trains!!!!!!!!!

And...the man himself! Joe that is, not Walt. The picture he is pointing to is of Walt's home in CA!

I loved the fire screen in this little sitting room

With that, our time was up. Joe offered to keep going, just for me, but sadly I was starting to freak out about the time (it was maybe 9:45 at this point) and had to decline.

I cannot say enough great things about Ranger Joe and the tour. Here is a person who LOVES his job, LOVES the WL and it just shines through. Though I was worried about Paul, Joe really helped me step back, enjoy the moment and learn a little bit about the lodge. I know I will always think of the stories when I look at those totem poles and smile that much more at Humphrey and when I go to the fitness center, sneak in to see Joe's favorite mouse at the Villas.

Heading back to our room, I swung by the photopass desk to see if we could push our appointment a little as I had little faith that people were actually going to be dressed, packed and that we could get our stuff to Bell Services and make a 10:30 session.

They could! Not by a ton, I think they moved it to 11:15 (maybe 11:30) but it was enough.

It was a darn good thing I did. They were not remotely ready!

Which had a hidden benefit. It meant I had time to really reorganize stuff so we’d have suits for later and in doing so, somehow I dug through every pocket of every bag and to what to my wondering eyes did appear?

A Key!

The long lost room safe key!

:dancer:
Upon opening the safe I had to thank my lucky stars for that bit of pixie dust. There was more in that safe than I’d realized. Not only was there the tip envelopes, and a (mostly) empty wallet but one that had more back up cash than I'd realized (for Universal tips), there was also my ipod and something else that I’d have been quite upset about once I realized it was gone. What it was I honestly have no idea but I had stashed way more than I’d realized and was so incredibly grateful to have gotten it back. Finally, with everyone dressed in their new shirts (new white shirts, handed out the night before at bedtime so they couldn’t get dirty before the pictures lol) we headed to bell services with our ridiculous load of stuff. Despite taking the time to sort of sort and repack, we seriously looked like the Clampetts once that cart was loaded up. All the luggage, most of our carryons, bags with our refillable mugs….it was something like 13 items! Bell services was busy and it seemed to take forever to get our stuff checked but finally, it was done. Which meant…

Picture time!

My family was SO excited they could hardly stand it. :rotfl:

Oh my! That is quite a story and quite a ride so far and it isn't even noon!!! :rotfl: Well I know your photos turned out nicely, from earlier posts, but I hope everything works out in the end! Looking forward to the next update!

Oh! I also wanted to say that the tour at WL seems like that would be a fun activity. I would enjoy something like that, too. Nice choice, even if it was short!

Man what an exhausting morning!!! :scared1:
Ranger Joe seems like a swell guy who loves his job :goodvibes I love his Hidden Mickey!! So cute!!
Oy on the gout  My father had that once (gout is such an ugly word, isn't it) and it was extremely painful as I recall. I remember getting him some organic pure cherry juice from a store I shop at to help with the medication.
So happy you found the key....I would have been a wreck if I wasn't able to get to my stuff. Those archaic safes with the keys....:sad2:

Tracy

WOW what an eventful morning!!!!! You got a lot done!!

The tour at WL sounds like something I would really like to do someday!! The picture of the Hidden Mickey is too cute!!!!

YAY for finding the room safe key!! That's definitely a plus!!! :thumbsup2

Wow what a crazy morning, it's never fun to start a disney morning with such terrible news...hopefully the still made an ok flight

That's too bad that there wasn't time to do the full tour but what he packed into the half an hour one sure seemed interesting.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the photoshoot:goodvibes

What a morning!!! I hope things calm down for you in the afternoon!:rotfl:

Can't wait to hear all about the photo session.:goodvibes

Oh, no! Poor Paul having to go to the hospital!

What a fun tour with Ranger Joe -- I never knew totem poles couldn't face each other -- very neat piece of trivia!

Your chapter title gave me quite a fright! Hope that the ER is able to help Paul and they're able to make a later stand-by flight. I am WAY too much of a control freak to ever consider flying stand-by... I'd be a nervous wreck!!

So glad you got to squeeze in the tour and change your portrait appt time. Can't wait to see the pictures!!

On your earlier question on the villas... BCV has not been refurbished. Not sure if it's on the "to do" list or not. I hope it is!

Wow - What a morning!!

The YC looks gorgeous!!! I'm so glad you were able to check in, your room was ready & you were able to hold Sandie & Paul's room. I hope it all worked out as planned. :goodvibes

The WL tour sounds amazing - what a fun & unique experience. I hope Sandie & Paul made it!! Can't wait to hear about the photo session. popcorn::

On no! Poor Paul :sad2: I hope he was feeling ok for the rest of the trip.

The WL tour looks like fun. I love finding out interesting facts about different places. The Lodge is beautiful in a completely different way. It isn't elegant, it has more of a majestic quality about it. I love the totem pole.

True but then again, the YC is a closer walk to the boardwalk bakery and DHS! :rotfl:

WL is great and the boat to MK? Priceless. Not to mention relatively easy access to all the MK resort dining options. :thumbsup2 I'll admit, I actually liked our view better at WL believe it or not even though the balcony itself was smaller. I'd stay there again, I think our biggest issue was the bedding, it just paled in comparison to the comfort of the YC bedding. Plus the YC room was quite a bit larger (as it should be for the cost jump!) But, at the end of the day at our kids ages and for us...the ability to walk to Epcot just beats out the boat to the MK. If you had younger kids, I don't know which would win!

I used my TA. Which is kind of funny after my whining about her but the best way to get OBC is through a TA and I was able to do a little shopping around for the deals that were out there and she matched that as best she could so I ended up with 3 OBC's, one via Disney Direct for $25, one by using our Disney Visa for $50 and then she's matching the Dreams Unlimited OBC offer, which for our class was $200, so $275 total. I could have gotten slightly more if I booked through magic for less but feel much better about using someone I know who responds quickly. The big ones (DU and MFL) take a good 2 days to respond and that doesn't work for me.

So, souvie money is covered! :cool1: All I could have gotten on my own by booking direct (sans a PIN which is unlikely for that time and location) was $75.

Disney does do some great off season offers, kids cruise free is the best, but of course it doesn't work with our timeline. And, as I understand it, if you do basically a bounceback and book another one while onboard, those incentives are really nice, 10% off and I think a $200 OBC plus only 10% down instead of 20%.

I forgot about the BW Bakery :rotfl:

One of the biggest cons for us with the WL is that my parents and I usually travel together with my nephews. The WL rooms have a lower occupancy level than the other deluxes. And I know I could try to get a villa. But, honestly, I find the decor so ugly and outdated.

I understand what you mean about the bedding. It's the same situation at the Poly. As much as I  the Poly, the bedding is SO much better at YC, CR, and BLT. I'm not a huge fan of patterned comforters. I like the basic white at the YC, CR, and BLT, with accent throws and pillows to add some color.

You scored with the OBC. That definitely makes it worth using a travel agent. We're thinking of a cruise for summer 2012. I may need to find a travel agent.

OK, everyone kind of covered it with "WOW!". That was an interesting, eventful morning! So glad you stopped for the cup of coffee- I know I couldn't have handled all that without some serious caffienation.

Sorry to hear about Paul, and hope it all worked out. Thank goodness for cellphones. I remember traveling not so long ago when it would have been impossible to even get the information about missed flight to you.

Yeah  on finding the key! Isn't it always in the last place you look! And don't you HATE that expression.

Thanks for the review of the WL tour. How often does Ranger Joe do that. On our July trip, we wanted to pop over to WL to look around, but we never made it. :sad2:

I'm glad they could reschedule the photopass shoot for you.

Shoot! Not a good beginning for Sandie & Paul - I hope you aren't going to tell us it was something MORE than pain management. Now wasn't there an issue about one of the E's not registered anywhere yet - I thought you were going to list one of them in Sandie and Paul's room?

Can't wait to see the photo session shots!

You, and I think your whole gang, would love the WL tour. He does a great job of working with the audience and focusing on things that might be more interesting to whomever is there. We were mostly adults and an older child but I think he'd do well with younger ones as well.

Yes, quite the ride of a morning. I am so glad I still took the time to do the abbreviated tour, despite it all.

Man what an exhausting morning!!! :scared1:

Tracy

Isn't that mickey adorable? Much more Mortimer than Mickey, and so cute!

Gout is such an ugly word. Rich man's disease they call it. I (We) didn't even know it still existed.

What's awful about those safes is you really want to keep your stuff safe and yet, are terrified you'll lock yourself out, forget the combo or lose the darn key. I've had some bad safe karma over the last year. Which means Mary Ellen is in charge of the safe in May. :rotfl: So glad I found the key, I swore I'd looked wherever it was before but, obviously not. Put it in such a safe projected place that I couldn't find it.

WOW what an eventful morning!!!!! You got a lot done!!

The tour at WL sounds like something I would really like to do someday!! The picture of the Hidden Mickey is too cute!!!!

YAY for finding the room safe key!! That's definitely a plus!!! :thumbsup2

The tour is really really neat, I highly reccomend it! If you are lucky (like Mary Ellen) and have the time, he might take you up to the roof! Her pictures are a amazing.

I love that Mickey and it was a HUGE yay for the room key and a huge DOH for all I actually had in that safe .

Wow what a crazy morning, it's never fun to start a disney morning with such terrible news...hopefully the still made an ok flight

That's too bad that there wasn't time to do the full tour but what he packed into the half an hour one sure seemed interesting.

It was a great tour, I would do it again and get the full hour if we ever stay there again. Photoshoot coming up next!

What a morning!!! I hope things calm down for you in the afternoon!:rotfl:

Can't wait to hear all about the photo session.:goodvibes

It was a bit nutty to be sure. I think it's something about moving day. It "should" be calm as I generally don't schedule much to allow for the transition but for some reason, is and isn't all at the same time. If that makes sense.

Photo's coming up next!

Oh, no! Poor Paul having to go to the hospital!

What a fun tour with Ranger Joe -- I never knew totem poles couldn't face each other -- very neat piece of trivia!

I thought so too! I wish I could remember the story and retell it, (something about Raven, I swear, it's always about Raven) but that's all I recall.

Your chapter title gave me quite a fright! Hope that the ER is able to help Paul and they're able to make a later stand-by flight. I am WAY too much of a control freak to ever consider flying stand-by... I'd be a nervous wreck!!

On your earlier question on the villas... BCV has not been refurbished. Not sure if it's on the "to do" list or not. I hope it is!

Sorry to scare you! I've done standby before but it wouldn't be my first choice. Then again, for free and with a usual upgrade to 1st class (they fly as a relative of an employee and somehow get this all the time, we don't quite get it) I can see it being worth it! They are used to it so while it's a bit hard on us to plan around, we roll with it.

Did they redo the BCV regular rooms? YC was just done, no idea if BC was as well. It would seem like they'd all get hit eventually

Wow - What a morning!!

The YC looks gorgeous!!! I'm so glad you were able to check in, your room was ready & you were able to hold Sandie & Paul's room. I hope it all worked out as planned. :goodvibes

It is SO beautiful! I loved our room.

The WL tour sounds amazing - what a fun & unique experience. I hope Sandie & Paul made it!! Can't wait to hear about the photo session. popcorn::

Photo session next and the tour is absolutely wonderful! too bad my pictures aren't better.

On no! Poor Paul :sad2: I hope he was feeling ok for the rest of the trip.

Majestic is a great description!

I  the bakery!

If they redid the linens it would change the whole thing. I love the beds themselves and the rest of the decor works for me. I will say, it is very true to the PNW/Lodge type of decor through. But I'm with you on patterned comforters. They do have the family suite that sleeps 6 which is bunkbeds. Could be fun for a night or 2. 3 nights there and 5 at the YC was the best of both worlds for me.

You scored with the OBC. That definitely makes it worth using a travel agent. We're thinking of a cruise for summer 2012. I may need to find a travel agent.

Well, our very own Rebecca is one you know and I'm happy to send the info for mine if you want as well. I know Rebecca is working on her cruise cert stuff and my agent specializes in them so I actually feel like I'm in very good hands for this. She gave me some great advice and it really helped us!

What a morning! Wow. Hope everything worked out just fine with Paul. Can't wait to see the Photopass pictures!

Glad you found the key! :cool1:

But now I'm going to be fretting about whether Sandie & Paul made it and what arrangements had to be made for the "leftover" E :headache: ;)

Sounds like a pretty exasperating morning. Sorry about Paul's health issues; I hope they were able to join you eventually.

I'm glad you were able to get a short tour with Ranger Joe. I love to meet people like that, who obviously love their job.

Truthfully at that point it really wasn't exasperating as well. I'd been mentally prepared for both flight and health issues, much as I adore Sandie and Paul drama was not totally unexpected and so while it was a bit like worst fears realized...neither of us were all that surprised that something had gone wrong. I mean we'd had to restructure the trip around some of Paul's stuff already, this was a little (sounds horrible but...) par for the course. The question for us at that point would be how it would, or wouldn't, play out.

You would really enjoy the tour!

I love Ranger Joe and I am so glad you got the abbreviated version of the tour. I thought that whole totem pole thing was pretty cool. What's so cool is you would never notice that they aren't completely aligned. I could see it when he took me up some steps from the concierge level to the roof. I wish I could remember the story behind the characters on the totem pool, but I can't. I also think its so cool that fireplace is designed to replicate the geological layers of the grand canyon.

You'd think Ranger Joe would get sick of talking about the same thing over and over, but you're right, the guy LOVES his job. He really is the coolest of dudes. He embodies what Walt Disney World is all about.

If I ever take a trip where I don't hit the parks, I am going back to take that tour again. Too bad you couldn't go to the roof, but you would have baked up there in 30 secs. Not good for your upcoming picture.

Glad you found the key. Bummer about the gout attack. Yeah to moving back the photo shoot.
