Downtown Disney Resorts

Tell me about staying in a DTD Resort. Good/Bad/Ugly? I am looking at a long weekend in December.

We recently stayed at Regal Sun Resort which is a DTD resort. It was in a great location. DTD was literally across the street and the Crossroads plaza was just down the street. Most, if not all resorts charge a resort fee (which can add up if staying more than one night). We did not use their buses but did enjoy the pool. The gift shop sold WDW merchandise, not knock-off stuff.

We recently followed up a week at the Beach Club with a four nights at Doubletree in DTD. It was a nice enough hotel, but not very "disneyfied". We had elevator problems the first morning, our room didn't get cleaned the first day, and we had a very cocky bus driver downing Disney employees all the way to Downtown Disney. The pool was very plain, but okay. My least favorite part was when my husband checked in and was given a card inviting him to come down for a free gift. We came in that night after the concierge desk had closed. When I went down to get our breakfast the next morning, I stopped to pick up the "gift". The lady gave me a couple of postcards with pictures of the hotel, then tried to get me to sign up for Hilton Honors and go to some kind of timeshare lunch. I thought that was a little sneaky.

The room itself was spacious, with a fridge and microwave. It was definitely worth the $89 per night, even though they tacked on parking and a resort fee. However, if we can afford it, we would always choose on property.

We stayed at the Royal Plaza for one night in November and we thought it was a really good deal for what we paid. We got it for $89 on Hotels.com. It was clean, ther rooms were really nice, and the staff was super helpful. We couldn't get that kind of deal agian this year so we opted for the Regal Sun at a similar rate. We figured since it was just a place to sleep for the first night after traveling all day as long as we had a clean bed it really didn't matter. We have heard good and bad about the Regal Sun and the general consensus seems to be that it is nice if you arein a tower room, and not so nice in the more "motel" section. We spent the extra $10 for the tower room.

I have stayed at the Hilton, the Buena Vista Resort and Spa and the Royal Plaza.

I would compare all of them favorably to a Disney Deluxe and the pricing is more in line with a Disney moderate. (Wonder why I am not paying Disney much anymore? )

Do you find the transportation difficult to navigate? What about going back in afternoon for a rest?

The buses are no harder to navigate than the Disney buses. You just have to walk a little farther to get to it when entering and exiting the parks. As a matter of fact, our entire family thinks that Downtown Disney buses are more comfortable than the Disney buses. Over the past nine years we have stayed at the Grosvenor Resort (now Regal Sun Resort), Royal Plaza, Lake Buena Vista Best Western & the Double Tree. Last year Thanksgiving we opted for Port Orleans Riverside because we wanted to vacation with friends. It was nice, but we were disappointed after being spoiled by the extra square footage at the Double Tree (not to mention the price difference)!

The Holiday Inn was "under construction" back in November of 08. Closed in 2004 due to one of the 'canes that rolled thru Central Flordia. A lot of work was being done and it did look better than November of 07. The HI is next door to the Hilton.

I have stayed at 3 DTD resorts and by far like the Hilton. It is very close to DTD and you can walk to all it has to offer and the transportation options from there too. I caution as some of the other DTD hotels say they are only an couple or a few blocks from DTD but these are not New York City or Washington DC blocks but in my estimation are 1/4 mile blocks. These get very long if you want to walk in the heat. The Hilton has a great pool, character breakfast on Sunday and we did not have poblem with the transportation that come to the hotle. If we happened to be out late we always had the option of taking transportation to DTD and taking the short walk to out hotel.

I stayed at the Regal Sun Resort in Nov 08 and enjoyed it. I was there with a group of fellow college students (although I am 35 and most of them were younger, LOL) and we LOVED being able to walk to DTD every night. I am going to miss that on my next trip for sure!
