Downtown Disney in December?

I am planning a mid-December trip with my mother (age 70) and son (age 11). This is our 2nd trip to Disneyworld. My mother has limited mobility (she rents a scooter) in the parks. We will spend 3 days total:
Day 1: Hollywood Studios - Fantasmic! Dining Package at Brown Derby
Day 2: Animal Kingdom OR Cirque du Soleil/Downtown Disney
Day 3: MVMCP

I am trying to decide between a day at Animal Kingdom or Downtown Disney with Cirque du Soleil's Nouba for day 2. The price will be about the same. Weather permitting we can enjoy the pool at our hotel (Grand Floridian) before heading to DTD for the 6 PM show.

Alternately, we could spend the day at Animal Kingdom and return to the hotel for dinner at Narcoossee's.

I'm concerned that DTD is too chaotic with construction.

Any thoughts or feedback?

There of course is a lot of construction going on at DTD and the crowds will get bigger and bigger around the holidays as usual. The issues of construction are not all that bad to be honest. Yes, they are walls up and the parking can be, well, hectic with all the traffic around the DTD area.

Hopefully, one of the pedestrian bridges closest to that end of DTD will be open by December. It is the one that is the furthest along with construction that will help some with people traffic not having to stop traffic to cross over to DTD.

Also. That end of DTD does not have a lot of construction walls up near Cirque, Splitsville, etc. which is nice since you will be near that end for your plans. I personally say go for it if you are wanting to hit DTD and you will be fine It's not as bad as some make it out to be.

Thanks so much! We decided to go with La Nouba (I just booked our tickets).

We will not have a car. Should we plan to take a taxi or UBER? What is the quickest and easiest way to get from the Grand Floridian (DVC Villas) to Downtown Disney?

Resort busses are available. While a taxi or Uber might be slightly faster (I say slightly because of all the construction, much of which Resort Busses bypass), I don't think it would save you so much time that it's worth the extra price. I'd just stick with the bus.

Also, by the time you go in December, Downtown Disney will be no more. It will be Disney Springs!

Would you use a scooter or wheelchair for your mother at DTD/DS?

The reason I ask is that the resort bus depot is at Marketplace, and a VERY long walk to La Nouba (and back). There is a boat available, which helps, but it's still quite a bit of territory.

To avoid traffic and congestion would it be easier to go to a nearby resort (e.g. Port Orleans) and then take the water taxi?

I am considering UBER.
