Downloading memory cards

Careful about making too broad a generalization about these things.
You're assuming that everyone has a low MP camera (or shoots at low-rez).
Although a 1GB card can hold a LOT of images, "thousands" is a bit of a stretch.

Here's the breakdown.

A 1GB card can hold:

853 images at 3MP
512 images at 4MP
409 images at 5MP
320 images at 6MP

A 256MB card can hold:

213 images at 3MP
128 images at 4MP
102 images at 5MP
80 images at 6MP

I have a 1GB and a 8MP camera. I get about 250-270 on it. I always save them at the highest resolution so that later I can crop them or enlarge them in photoshop. :goodvibes It never hurts to save them at a little higher resolution in case you want to crop them later. :goodvibes

If you take a lot of digital pics and you don't have a laptop computer to take with you then pick up a INDi Photo Harddisk. It is sooooo worth the cost in the long run. We got one prior to our last trip with our new digital camera and my DW thanks God that we did. We ended up shooting almost 4000 pictures in 11 days. At $11.99 a pop per disc the cost was almost the same as the total cost of the Harddisk and we have it to use year after year after year. The Harddisk cost close to $200 and Best Buy has it right now on sale for $175. We highly recommend it. It was simple to use and it brought our memories home safely.

Agree 1000%.

I too have high end DSLR (minolta maxxum) with multiple lenses. Alway take pictures at full res, then crop or resize as need. You can always make them smaller from a large file size. But you can never go bigger.

I carry 2 - 1GB - CF cards with me. Thats about 600 pictures between visits to my laptop. I have only filled them both 1 time, and that was when I was just playing around trying out some "quirky" shots.

My camera is a 3.2mp. I was explaining that with the settings I have on my camera I can get 3200 photos. To me that is thousands (as in 3 thousand). I understand that not every camera is not the same as well as the photographer but in my case (as I stated before) I can get 3200 pictures on my xD 1gig card.... ::yes::

If you are using the full 3.2 MP, you can't get 3200 high-quality photos on a 1 MB card.
I didn't make up my chart. It's just math.

Now, I'm not saying you CAN'T get 3200 images on the card...
I am saying that you can ONLY get around 800 - 850 (or so) FULL RESOLUTION 3MP images.

And while 3.2 MP images are not extremely high rez to begin with, they are good enough to print pretty well.

BUT, cutting them down by 75% (that's what it would take to get 3000+ images to fit a 1GB stick) would make them VERY LOW QUALITY and/or small images.

If you'll re-read my post, that's what I said.
Most people want images of high enough quality to print.

Thanks for all the input. In June we went to Disneyland and our card went bad and we lost over 200 pictures.

I think we are going to buy at least one more card maybe two.
