OK I am going to look like a fool asking this question. Just got my son an ipad 1st gen and want to download a few books for him. I know I can download through itunes. Can I download from other places too? If so where do you find good prices. For example we want to load Artemis Fowl
Also where else can I download movies from? I know I can stream some but he has the wifi only version so that might not always be good when traveling right?

Yes

For example we want to load Artemis Fowl. Amazon $5.69.

There are Kindle and Nook apps for the iPad. You would download them just like you would if you had a Kindle or a Nook. Also, Adobe Overdrive Media has an ipad app now. That allows you to borrow library e-books from your library without needing a computer at all. Some libraries will let you keep checked out books for 21 days on your device.

So if I have a nook app and my friend has a nook can she lend me books

you don't buy books from iTunes, you buy them from iBooks - which I really wouldn't recommend because those books can only be downloaded to Apple devices.

All the major bookstores (Amazon, Barnes, Borders) and several online stores have Apps for the iPAD. If you buy from one of those stores you can then later read the books on several devices. For instance if you put the Kindle App on the iPAD - your son will be able to read the book on the iPAD, his computer, an Android tablet, or a Kindle .... should he ever happen to obtain those, even if it is 5 years from now.

You can go to Inkmesh.com and search them for a price comparison on books from different retailers.

Like someone else mentioned, download the (free) Kindle app for the iPad. There's are thousands of free books available.

I haven't read this entire thread so I apologize if I repeat something already mentioned.

I have a ipad and I get books from:

amazon - download the kindle app to do this

barnes and noble - download the nook app to do this

itunes - download the ibooks app for this

and my favorite
Overdrive app - lets you borrow digital title from the public library - It is my favorite b/c it is FREE
You need to set up an account with adobe for this after you download the app. But after that it is simple as long as your library does digital loans.

I am sorry to hijack this thread, but is it possible to download Overdrive to a Kindle so that I may borrow books from the library?

I got an I pad 2 yesterday and was wondering how the free books worked thanks for the info
