Went for an eye exam today and ordered new glasses. However, while I was getting the glasses, I asked about getting a paper copy of the prescription, just in case. Every time I've gotten glasses before, prescriptions were always provided handwritten on a printed pad with the eye doc's name, other than one time the optician called up the eye doc's office. I'm pretty sure that they're required by law (in my state) to provide eyeglass prescriptions to the patient, unlike contact lenses where they can insist on buying them through the eye doc or affiliated optician. However, I used to go to an eye doc who would always provide contact lens prescriptions on demand as a matter or courtesy, while others would restrict it to the opticians they were affiliated with.

An optician said I could get a paper copy, but then I checked my email right there on my phone and saw there was a downloadable copy available. Seemed a bit new. It had an image of the eye doc's signature and everything was printed. Not sure how well accepted it would be. However, being printed I'd think it would be very readable compared to some of the chicken scratch I've seen on some prescriptions.

My husband downloaded his recent prescription from his eye exam (from his medical records) and used that at the optician to order his new glasses. No problem.

I've been able to have my eye Dr. email me a copy of my RX for years now, which I use elsewhere. Never a issue.

I don't think it would be a problem using anywhere if it's downloaded.

Also, IIRC if you order glasses from like Zenni, all you have to do is input the numbers and you're good to go.

At the end of each yearly visit, my current eye doctor gives me a printed copy of my current eyeglass prescription. It is a typed looking, computer system generated 8.5x11 sheet of paper, and wouldn’t look any different if it was emailed to me and I printed it out. I have been going there for six years now.

My eye doctor has been emailing mine to me for several years and I have never had an issue using it to buy glasses. I usually receive it a day after my appointment, they also send an electronic copy of my receipt, and the manufacturer rebate form for my contacts.

I buy my eye glasses from the doctor that does my exam because my insurance covers almost everything but I get my sunglasses from Walmart because they're very affordable.

I have to take a printed copy of the digital download in with me only because they have to include it in the paperwork but they have no problem using the digital download.

I just got a paper copy for the eyeglasses, took a picture, and e-mailed it to myself. I also ordered my glasses from an online retailer where I had to enter the prescription (it's backed up on their server via my account).

Mine will not email any RXs...not even for over the counter eye cleansers he recommended. You always have to pick up in person.

I have digital too, it is a new thing but I printed it out myself.

For the contacts, I think the rule is (at least in our states) they can insist on filling it once then they need to give you the prescription so one box each eye then we are out. Generally, we like 1800contacts because they let you send back excess old prescription to exchange for a new prescription and that is such a big deal to save money for a whole year or two worth of lenses without worry.
