Went for an eye exam today and ordered new glasses. However, while I was getting the glasses, I asked about getting a paper copy of the prescription, just in case. Every time I've gotten glasses before, prescriptions were always provided handwritten on a printed pad with the eye doc's name, other than one time the optician called up the eye doc's office. I'm pretty sure that they're required by law (in my state) to provide eyeglass prescriptions to the patient, unlike contact lenses where they can insist on buying them through the eye doc or affiliated optician. However, I used to go to an eye doc who would always provide contact lens prescriptions on demand as a matter or courtesy, while others would restrict it to the opticians they were affiliated with.
An optician said I could get a paper copy, but then I checked my email right there on my phone and saw there was a downloadable copy available. Seemed a bit new. It had an image of the eye doc's signature and everything was printed. Not sure how well accepted it would be. However, being printed I'd think it would be very readable compared to some of the chicken scratch I've seen on some prescriptions.
