Dove Campaign

- It's a weekday, so people aren't on as much. Also, you've only had this posted for 20 minutes. Most of the time people click on threads because of the topic and not the OP. Don't give up, sometimes it just takes a bit for people to respond. =)

- Body image is affected hugely by the media. If everyone says that 90 pound model is the hottest thing around, young teenage girls are going to believe it, and strive to look that way.

I think the campaign is a beautiful thing.

I'm a large girl but I have self confidence. My friends are all much thinner than me but a few of them don't have self confidence. I'd give up some of my self confidence for them no doubt.

I'm gonna be devil's advocate. I'm one of the people that all of you hate. I 'fix' the photographs of models and make them inhumanly beautiful. Whats worse, I plan on becoming a fashion photographer, for the media that everyone hates.

I spend most of my days with models, be it in person or just their images. Models are single handedly the most self-conscious people in the world. Why? Because their career is based on HOW THEY LOOK. Any of you could do any job in the world, and you don't have to live in fear of being fired becuase someone doesn't like how you look. That is why their photos are so worked on. An average looking woman may sell a magazine to you, but she won't sell a fashion show to a designer who needs a model. She won't fill a portfolio with Vogue or Covergirl, which is what models need to survive in this world.

I think the Dove campaign is a beautiful thing, but i don't see it changing fashion/media any time soon. I don't see it saving girls from eating disorders. I don't see it doing anything except making dove lots and lots of money, by people who don't see the industry the same way I do.

One of my only talents is to make an average person beautiful. Hence, I have a distorted perception of beauty. I view everyone to be beautiful. I've never met an ugly person in my life. I find something beautiful about everyone. So, instead of hating the media, hating the photographers, hating the editors, and hating the models for what the industry has done to them, why don't you try seeing it that way. Everyone has something beautiful about them. You don't need DOVE to tell you that.

i think its a really amazing idea. but i agree with shelby, i dont think it will change what most people believe.

i model. and im not gonnna hide it, im not really self consious at all. Why? Because I love the way i look and i love my build and i just love me. i do know my career is based on my looks, but to be a model, you would have to understand that it takes mindpower too. you have to be smart. from all the stories of crack, OD's, and eating disorders by models, its almost impossible to believe any model has a brain. and i think for the most part, we're steroetyped as dumb and annorexic *****s. but im definately not like tht, nor will i ever pretend to be. I've been through my share of eating disorders and depression because of modeling and its not great. everyday fashion changes, and the look does too. so if it's lose 5 or so pounds, you have to do it, if you really want the job. i dont think theres anythin wrong with that, if thats what you want in life or whatever the situation may be.

i really wish sometimes that the world can just see that EVERYBODY is beautiful. and im like shelby, i swear i've never ever seen an ugly person and i find beauty in everyone. I would love to see more normal sized and larger sized people walk the runway for Vogue and whatnot. People complain abotu how our society sucks, when if they wanna change it, they need to be more accepting. I'm totally open for a new modeling world. i think its be amazing

well said! i dont think i've ever considered anyone ugly either , because everyone has at least one thing that makes them physically and/or emotionally and mentally beautiful.

It would be *nice* if it changed how people feel about themselves.
That takes a lot, though.

It just makes guys even more judgmental of girls and makes girls even more aware of their flaws in my opinion.

we are talking about this is psych class. It is proven that having a skinny model does not cause a product to sell. It will sell as well as a curvey cover or one without a model at all. So why put a stick thin person on it?

I understand hyper ultra fashon using ultra skinny models, cause the clothes are meant to be art not real clothes. To be honest they are meant to look ridiculous! I also dont think its fair that fashon shows restict women under a BMI of 18. Not only are BMI's extremly inacurate but some people are naturally skinny, without being pressured.

I get annoyed when shops like H&M or Topshop (I dont know if you have them in US) which are clothes for everyday people are being modeled by very skinny girls. These clothes are meant to be for everyone, not just the 1% of the population who are that skinny.

I look at curvy girls and love them, cause they dont look like pre-pubesent girls, they look like women. They look healthy and happy and those people should be selling clothes. I also don't agree we should be using very overweight people, we should be using the average. In the UK thats a size 14 (dont know in US), so those women should be advertising these products, like the Dove adverts.

Just my rant!
I am personally fine about my weight. Weight is nothing but a number, and changes depending on where in the galazy you are. More important is fitness and confidence. I like to stay toned, but hey if i fancy penut butter on a spoon, im gonna go for it!

The sexiest thing is confidence ladies, so strut your stuff!

lol, i see what theyre trying to do, and its good and all.. but people dont judge on what beauty is because of magazines and stuff... seeing a girl in an ad and seeing a girl in real life is different... the girl in the ad is trying to sell something, so she has to appeal to as many people as possible.. hence why they need to photoshop it to look good and to catch peoples eyes... however, its not like guys go around, expecting to meet girls that look like those models... far from it.. personally, i dont like the whole skinny look lol.. i keep thinking that theyre going to break a bone from like, sitting wrong or something lol.. just be normal! curves pwn sticks :P

the dove campain is AMAZING my mom showed it to me a while ago.

it makes everyone feel a little better about themselves ya know?

couture isn't meant to look ridiculous. its meant to look different than ANYTHING on a shelf right now. Sometimes, it DOES look ridiculous, but its not a designer sitting infront of a mess of fabric saying to herself "let me make something god-awful ulgy" it doesn't work that way.

Thin is in, whether you want to believe that or not. Fashion starts in Europe. All the trends move from there. As long as europe (france and spain mostly) are saying "i like skinny models in everything" skinny models will be everything. Very few shows restrict by BMI. Fashion show people care more about how the clothes look and how well you walk and how well you're going to sell clothes. They don't so much care about your BMI. they will work with you to tone specific things, like if you've got wider hips, they'll have you lose a bit of weight. if your arms are too thin, they might have you gain a bit.

A UK size 14 is an american size 6 or 8, i believe. I also think that in america there is MORE pressure to be thin, put on by clothing companies and the media, than in the UK. example, the sizes. an american 14 is almost plus size. we have size 0 and 00, sometimes even 000. women aren't getting skinnier. Clothes are just being resized, to make you think that.

Thin is in, and it will be for awhile.

I think the dove campaign is a pretentious money making scheme whose whole campaign is based off rocking people to their self conscious core. I believe that DOVE doesn't believe what they're selling. Because why would a campaign for TRUE BEAUTY have to sell age defying cream? Is age not the beauty that they're looking for? All they did was get a few former models and a few plus size models (average american plus size wears a size 14, btw. which isn't even plus size) and did a shoot where they were laughing.

This campaign isn't really for anything but making money in a really pretentious way.

I Think It's a good video. :)

But I hate how all people ever talk about is how people always want to get skinny. I'm Sick of it. I wish I would GAIN WEIGHT. But nobody ever talks about that. They all say to be happy that I'm skinny, and maybe i'm being selfish or somthing, but I hate it. I'm underweight but naturally, and I really wish I could be normal. Guys always go for the curvy, womanly girls over the skinny ones who have 0 curves what-so-ever. I think instead of cocentrating on being Skinny, people should think more about being Normal.:rainbow:

Sparz I dont agree.
I dont think Americans are put under more pressure than the English. We have just as much problem with 'Size Zero' Debate as America. We have just high rates of anorexia as America per percentage of the population. Our clothes arent being re-sized but they are getting lower sizes. It is still hard to find size 4's in any shops appart from designer, but they are around. High street goes as low as size 6. Our average size is 14, which i have found out equivilates to your size 12.

Maybe by our clothing in adult sizes not going down that low helps against people thinking they are too big. ut we have just as much advertising using skinny women as in America, we have just as much pressure on being 'perfect'. Ok so we dont have beauty queens, doesnt mean we aren't pressured to be beautiful. We see all your american shows too, more than we see English shows, with people who are mode sized.

I think its a bit unfair saying one country has it worse than the other, cause its a problem for all western countries, not just the biggest one.

Sorry for the rant.
I like the dove campaign. Its nice to see real women who are happy being who they are than a lot of the sour faced women on tv.

Okay, maybe I was wrong about their being MORE pressure, but I do feel that there is a different pressure.
