My favorite pro athlete has retired. I followed his career through college, the NFL, the CFL but most rabidly when he played for the Buffalo Bills.

I've heard he could be a bit much as far as personalities go but for shear out and out fun on the field, he never let me down. From the Hail Mary pass to the Buffalo broken play to last years Drop Kick, Doug showed his originality nearly every time he took the field. And wasn't it fun to watch him run!!! :thumbsup2

So thanks Doug for all the enjoyment you brought to my family. You will be missed on the field doing what you always did best.... making us smile. :goodvibes

When I was 14 years old, I had season tickets to the NJ Generals USFL football team and I got his autograph on my book of clippings- wouldn't you know just a few weekends ago I found that augograph at my Dad's house while I was helping him pack to move?

I've really enjoyed following his career - both the ups and the downs. He's been such a class act and i'm so happy for him that he was able to retire a Patriot. He sure had a long and glowing career for a 5'9" Quarterback whom everyone said wouldn't ever make anything of his football career.

I wish him the best of luck with whatever he chooses to do next. Has anyone here read that SI article from last year about his son (and how him and his wife/daughter cope?). That was very touching.

For someone who was way too small and too freewheeling to be successful in college, much less the NFL, he certainly has had a long, and, by all accounts, successful career.

I wish him all the best.

He will be missed. First place I ever went in the world was to BC to see him play.

I was SO thrilled when Doug came up here to Canada to play in the CFL. He was, IMO, the best QB to ever play here (with apologies to Warren Moon fans everywhere ;) ). When he got his chance to go to the NFL again, I was happy for him - he had done all he could do up here, and a shot at the big time was more than he could be expected to pass up. I think he got hosed by Buffalo and San Diego, and I wish he would have tried one more year with the Patriots, but so be it.

Doug is an amazing athelete. I only regret that, living in Nova Scotia, I could never buy Flutie Flakes, the cereal he endorsed with the proceeds going to Autism research. I have 8 year old twin sons both of whom have autism, like Doug's son, and his efforts in that arena almost match his efforts in football arenas all over North America.

Best of luck, Mr Flutie. Your presence will be missed.
