Doubting Disney

Because we are early risers at WDW, our son has opened the MK twice. We didn't ask for it, but they chose him. We just got back from DL and our friends' 4 yr old daughter had some great interaction with Chip and Dale. They poured syrup on her hand and tried to wipe it off with sugar packets. She thought it was so funny.

Now, if we should get picked for one of these magical dreams that would be so cool. But if we don't, someone else will and that's cool, too.

Aww, Starbox, you made me cry--I'm such a sentimental baby. I didn't buy DVC for entitlements but because I love WDW. No matter how tired, how cranky we get or others get, the magic usually works and soon enough everyone is happy again. I've gotten superb treatment at the Contemporary before I bought into DVC. I took my sis and family and had asked for adjoining rooms. Somehow that didn't happen and when I asked the CM checking me in about it, she looked in the computer, asked me to wait a moment, went to the back room and got the OK to give us a big, honkin' suite!! Whether I win a dream is irrelevant; being able to afford to go to WDW as often as I do is living the dream every time. Frankly, if someone who scraped and budgeted for a long time to afford the "trip of a lifetime" gets a prize, great! Think of their memories and how special that will be.

ENTITLEMENT! I don't know if it is genereation X or just the progression of our society in general.

I think it's generation me, a.k.a. babyboomers. :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

On a more serious note, my wife and I were just talking about the promotion. We're so fortunate in many ways and we'd prefer to see any wishes go to others. Regardless, nothing wrong with trying to promote dreams. :)

I am glad to see my fellow DVCers see this for what it is, a contest and nothing more. Not that I really expected anything less from this group, than level headed, caring thinking. :thumbsup2

I guess because I post here and on the other forums, I am amazed sometimes at what I read on the other forums such Theme Parks, Resorts and Restaurants. I mean some of those folks are scarey. ;)

Why would any parent build up a young child with the possiblity of unfullfilled expectations about getting one of the big prizes. I mean that is borderline cruel in my opinion. Just don't tell them about it and if you win something, great, if not, they got a great trip to Disney World.

I am just glad I can come back here and find there are some caring, rule abiding people (most everyone  ) here on the DVC forums and I am greatful for ya. :thumbsup2

Personally, I think it's a DIS board problem and especially a DVC board problem.

These boards seem to me at least to have a HIGHER then normal population of "Disney doesn't love me" and "I paid a LOT for DVC and I want to be treated like a KING" groups.

I pretty much knew that the first place this program would get "examined" was the DVC boards followed soon by the resort boards.

However, if you go outside of the DIS I think you would find this thought line doesn't go far. (Kind of like the HYSTERIA over points transfers, cruise other Disney boards, not even a minor mention on a lot of them. Here the sky was falling and Disney was ruining EVERYTHING)

I figure it will work fine and the thing to do once 10/1 comes around is to avoid opening ALL posts on the DIS where someone is posting.. "I went to Disney and spent thousands of dollars and I didn't win so I am never going to Disney again"

Some times I think it is just easier to criticize than it is to compliment. :teeth: Does any other theme park company give away good freebies?

Ditto Sammie. A couple weeks back a post of mine was moved to the community board. So I took a look at some of the threads on that board and I was quite surprised at some of the very heated exchanges going on.

The CB can get pretty scary. I used to post there quite often but very rarely even look at the threads now. I come to the DISboard to be enlightened...not enraged, and unfortunately that's what happens with a lot of the CB content. There are some repeat offenders that obviously just post comments to get everyone fired up. I'm not saying that doesn't happen on the DVC boards, but it's certainly not as frequent as the CB.

Now, as for the Year of a Million Dreams...I will be there on Oct. 1st and can't wait!!!

I'm interested in this thought of Disney leaving "holes" in its rules. First, I have not read the rules or any official fine print, so basically I don't know what I am talking about. ;) However, with what I have ever heard when it comes to Disney's lawyers, I can't imagine there are any stones left unturned. I can't imagine Disney leaving themselves wide open like that. What do you guys think?

My other thought is, wow, I am pretty naive when it comes to whats going on with the other boards on this contest. I had no idea there was that big of a deal. Sure, I have a couple of issues with Disney corporate, but as far as my beloved WDW, let me tell you...If you ever think WDW is majorly lacking in customer service or nice, unexpected "freebies," just take a trip to the other parks around. I live in Florida, in the Tampa area, and I just shake my head in shock and shame when I go to other theme parks. There is NO comparison. It is truly the happiest place on earth for us. And our DVC membership brings such a welcome respite from everyday life. And I'm even a generation Xer!!!! :rotfl2:

I think they will have it completely under control, which is why I was amazed that people were already thinking it was going to be a problem and cause chaos. I just don't see that happening.

BTW, I'm already a winner because I am a licensed Monorail Pilot...and I've got the official card to prove it!
This is awesome Calypso ! :thumbsup2 :cool1:

Starbox....loved your story :grouphug:

Happy DREAMIN' everyone.........

Hey Guys,
Next time some one complains about Disney's contest...

I just read an article from the associate press that Great adventure's theme parks are running a contest for Holloween (also starting in October) If you eat a live cockroach you and 3 guest get to go to the head of the line at the attractions.
I think I'll stick with a Year of a million dreams.

Life isn't "fair" for everyone and yet some choose to blame others for what "they" don't get.

Your topic reminds me of the folks who complain about the cost of a Disney trip after trip but keep going back. They feel as if Disney "created this monster" that they just have to keep feeding.

I wish that all those that do win these items for the Year of a Million Dreams a happy and joyous time.

On an off topic remark - someone said of generation X that we feel we are "owed" something and thats where alot of these attitudes come from - My husband and I are both of generation X and so are many of my good hardworking friends. Our basic philsophy - personal responsibility. You work hard for what you get (not that it should be dropped on our laps). Handouts and freebies is not something we "expect" nor should we. We are given many opportunities in life (especially here in the states) and if folks don't take those opportunities and turn them into something good well - thats their business. Just know that it isn't a generation X thing (I know others from the baby boomer & generation Y that feel they are entitled to many things).

Hey watch the the Baby Boomer coments remember there are a whole bunch of us. :lmao: And I for one don't expect anything for free because nothing in life has been so far. :goodvibes

Don't sweat it.

There are some people in life who would gripe if you gave them $10,000 in tens instead of twenties.

Just enjoy your trip while your there. That is all that matters isn't it?

If someone is gong to WDW with the intent of inning something they should possibly go to Vegas instead. MHO. YMMV

I've posted this elsewhere, but for those who don't venture far from DVC areas:

Just thought I'd post a bit of an article in the Orlando Sentinel on Sept. 18th:

Disney is counting on the unexpected nature of the prize giveaways to provide as much excitement as the actual wins. The rule is anyone, any time, anywhere within Disney properties, said Ken Potrock, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts senior vice president of global alliance marketing.

"Completely random. Completely unbiased. Completely luck of the draw," Potrock said. "What we created was a mathematical model, a randomizer, that will select the different dream giveaways each and every day.

"It gets into detail like, it'll be the fourth person to walk through the exit of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at 3:01 p.m.," he said, describing a hypothetical selection. "And we've even gone so far as to say, if two people are walking through the doorway at the same time, it's the person on the left."

Winners will be split between those visitors who show up on Disney properties, and those who send in postcard entries.

To avoid spontaneous scenes of envy and disappointment among nearby people, major prizewinners won't be told what they won on the spot.

"We're not going to announce that in front of hundreds of other people who were so close," Potrock said. "We're going to celebrate later in the day by putting those people in as grand marshals in the parades."
