Doubletree Guest Suites in the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort
VS
Royal Plaza in the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort

Both were recommended as "preferred hotels" through mousesavers.com. These resorts are right next to each other in DTD. They both have qualities we are looking for. So, any thoughts on which one to stay at would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch:banana:

I would stay at the Doubletree DTD VS Royal Plaza. Doubletree Suites are HUGE, 2 rooms, kind of like a bedroom/bathroom area and then doors you can close off to a large livingroom/"kitchen" area. Royal Plaza rooms are not that big and no microwave/frig, which I think is a big plus.

I live only an hour and a half away from the Mouse House so we are there almost every month and we pretty much only stay at Doubletree if we are not onsite.

Have a great trip!:cool2:

The Doubletree is nice, especially if you need space for extra people, or if you have small kids that you'd rather be able to put to bed while you stay up and watch tv.

The doors between the rooms aren't the greatest, but it's better than trying to fit a lot of people into one room.

Either way you'll take the same bus to the parks, which stops at the hotels along that side of the street. The bus times are scheduled, but sometimes they come a little after the "scheduled" time, because they stop closer to DTD first.
Epcot and Hollywood Studios share a bus and so do the Animal Kingdom and the Magic Kingdom. The Magic Kingdom bus stops at the TTC.

Definitely make sure you're signed up for the Mousesaver's Hot Deals e-mails either way, because those tend to be better than the ones you get through their website, and the only way to take advantage of them is by clicking on a link in an e-mail.
We got $89/night last July at the Doubletree.

So far Doubletree is in the lead. I have a feeling Royal Plaza may be less expensive with the Mousesaver.com discount at 40 % off. I'll know for sure tomorrow when I can get a price quote.

I've stayed at both. With kids, hands down I'd go for the space at the Doubletree. Plus, it's closer to the Crossroads shopping center, so you can walk there.

We stayed one night in a "suite" at the Royal Plaza. It was fine for me and my 2 kids, and the room was nice and big! Separate king bed for me and DD, and pullout sofa for DS. Fridge was there too. The pool was icky (to me) but my kids spent some energy jumping in and swimming (no lifeguard, no slide, but they loved just cooling off there). It was only one night, and we were tired, and we did get room service which was very friendly and fine. The free breakfast I could have skipped, but it was fine.

The Doubletree we stayed at one night when we drove down and arrived into Orlando at 1:30 am, and couldn't get a room at the Boardwalk villas until the next morning (called on the way, they had a room at the Inn but it was expensive, and we just needed a bed for a few hours). The room wasn't fancy, but it was very big! We also got room service (breakfast) and it was good too.

I'd go for the space!

Is the bus system the same as the system for the on site hotels? We've stayed in them before - but are considering d-tree in dt disney this summer - considering skipping a rent-a-car if the busses from the double tree are dependable for disney theme and water parks. Any advice here is appreciated.pirate:

Is it a quick walk to DTD?

You can walk pretty quickly to Crossroads from the Doubletree. But, if you're grocery shopping you may 1) want a car, and 2) want to shop elsewhere than Gooding's, as they stock very little and have very high prices.

If you look at a map, you will see that Downtown Disney is a bit of a walk, about 15 minutes or so. The bus system that serves the Downtown Disney hotels is its own system, but they are all kind of connected (a bus serves I think 2 or 3 of the hotels at a time). They say they run every 30 minutes or so. Some folks like it, some don't and prefer to use their cars.

Another option is to supplement the bus system with a taxi every once in a while.

I'd weigh out the option of a rental car, as if you're flying you still need to get from the airport to the hotel. You could look into getting a car for a day or two, then turning it in, then getting it again the last day (you can pick up at the airport and drop off for example at the Dolphin with Alamo and National, I've done that and saved $ as I got a great deal for a day rental, did our shopping and turned it in). Just be sure if you book it online to reserve it at the correct pick up and return locations - there are rental car offices at a couple of DTD hotels, I forget which ones (mousesavers has some info).

If you look at a map, the Hilton is closest to DTD, and the Doubletree is furthest. Still, if it's not too hot out, and you like a nice walk, you can definitely walk there. If it's hot, I'd drive or take a cab, or use a bus if you are willing to wait.

For any of you who decide to stay at the Doubletree - try their restaurant - I think called the Evergreen Cafe - it was outstanding! After driving from PA we opted out of heading to DTD for dinner our first night as planned & we were thrilled we stayed at the hotel. The restaurant was beautiful and the food was excellent! We enjoyed it so much that we went back again later during our 9 day trip. Plus we had a discount coupon from Mousesavers that came with our reservation.

Another option...the hotel has Pizza Hut items, if you don't need a big meal. You can call the restaurant from your cell when you're on the bus back to Doubletree & they'll have your pizza ready for you when you arrive, to pick up & take back to your room.

We really enjoyed the Doubletree. We need extra space because I travel with my sister, plus teen son & niece. Got an $89.00 per night rate through Mousesavers that included free breakfast (muffins, pastries, cereal, yogurt, fruit...) that we also took advantage of daily. The only thing that wasn't acceptable was the sofa bed - I can't imagine anyone being able to sleep on that thing - absolutely awful! The sofa itself was comfortable, but the bed had a wafer thin mattress that allowed you to feel every metal support in the frame. But other than that, we were extremely pleased - PLUS I got Hilton HHonors points which was an added bonus.

Can't say anything about the Royal Plaza because we've never stayed there, but we LOVED the Doubletree!
