Note the mentions of Bahamas and Hurricane Ike!!!

From the AP 9:10 am

Associated Press Writer
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) - Tropical Storm Hanna roared along the
edge of the Bahamas on Thursday ahead of a possible hurricane hit
on the Carolinas, leaving behind at least 61 dead in Haiti.
Hurricane Ike, a still-more dangerous Category 4 storm, was
advancing from the east.
Hanna was forecast to pass east of the Atlantic archipelago
before striking along the coast of North or South Carolina by
Friday night, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said
Hanna's sprawling bands of outer winds are likely to hit far
sooner. Tropical storm force winds extended outward as far as 290
miles (465 kilometers) from the center.
Haitian authorities on Thursday blamed Hanna for 61 deaths, most
due to flooding.
Civil Protection Department spokesman Abel Nazaire said 21 of
the deaths were in the northern city of Gonaives, which has been
almost entirely cut off by floodwaters.
The storm also was blamed for one death in Puerto Rico.
Hanna's heart was about 280 miles (455 kilometers)
east-southeast of Nassau - and about 760 miles (1,220 kilometers)
south-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, around dawn
Thursday. It was moving toward the northwest near 12 mph (19 kph).
Its maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph) were just a
little short of hurricane force, and forecasters said it could
strengthen.
A hurricane watch was posted from Surf City, North Carolina to
Edisto Beach, South Carolina, with a tropical storm force watch
south to Altamaha Sound, Georgia.
Forecasters said it could curve northeastward after hitting U.S.
coast and run up the seaboard past New York with
tropical-storm-force winds.
No major damage or injuries have yet been reported in the
Bahamas.
"Most certainly I am relieved. We are tranquil," said Stephen
Russell, interim director of the Bahamas National Emergency
Management Agency.
But he was already worried about Ike and Tropical Storm
Josephine behind it.
"As soon as we are clear with Hanna, we have to turn our eyes
now on Ike, a powerful one coming ashore," Russell said.
Early Thursday, Ike had maximum sustained winds near 145 mph
(230 kph). It was centered 550 miles (885 kilometers) northeast of
the Leeward Islands and forecasters said it could reach the Bahamas
by Monday. It was moving toward the west-northwest at 17 mph (28
kph).
Ike is the third major hurricane of the Atlantic season, which
runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. The other two were Bertha and Gustav,
which was blamed for 112 deaths in the Caribbean, including 76 in
Haiti.
Josephine, too, grew stronger early Thursday after weakening on
Wednesday. Josephine had maximum sustained winds near 60 mph (95
kph) and was moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph (17 kph).
"We've got three of them on the way. We've just got to be
prepared," said Frank Augustine, a 47-year convenience store
manager, as he bought 10 five-gallon water jugs under blue skies at
a Nassau depot.
Only a few dozen of the Bahamas' roughly 700 islands are
inhabited, but they are near sea level and have little natural
protection. In the south, Hanna knocked out electricity in
Mayaguana Island and forced the closure of some small airports
including those in Long Island and Acklins Island.
The storm has drenched the Turks and Caicos and Puerto Rico but
wreaked the most havoc in storm-weary Haiti, where it flooded the
western city of Gonaives.

We completed day 2 of our homeschool year today :goodvibes It feels so strange to say "Ok, it's time to sit down at the table for some work"...but it's going well.

Although, Reese really, really hates to write, color, cut, etc. His fine motor skills are OK, but he'd rather do more physical things. So, each day I have printed out his name in dotted lines to trace, because I really, really want him to work on signing his name!

Our first day, yesterday, we sit down, he writes the R,E,E and then says "I don't like Kindegarten. I'm done."

Uh, no sweetheart. We're less than 60 seconds into our 14 year homeschool journey, you can't quit yet! :lmao:

Today went much better, and he was very proud to show Daddy what we did for phonics. I'm still debating whether or not I want to bring anything onboard or not. Any homeschoolers here....are you bringing anything? I know some schoolers are bringing assignments from teachers...

I was thinking I'd just leave our phonics work at home, & have Reese dictate some journal entries to me about each day. Then I could put it all on the blog & it would do double duty!

If you DO decide to bring the phonics work, let me know. Reese & Emmie can work on theirs together!! :rotfl: We're not homeschooling, but I'm thinking she may have some phonics work to do while we're gone, poor baby. Her school is using the A Becka progam for reading & seems to be working really well for her. The teacher speaks highly of it. She had this same program in pre-school as well.

Trust Me.. I know the feeling.. I wasn't the one who invited her.. My hubby did, because her Birthday is September 25th..

Doug knows better than that! Actually, we did invite her when we first booked - as long as she had her own state room, but she doesn't think Disney is her kind of Cruise Ship. :confused3 She just doesn't understand!

She has sailed on a Princess Cruise Ship (The one from the Love Boat Shows - there's an '80's flash back for yah!) and some little ship that sails out of Miami and does a 3 day to Nassau. She thinks they were elegant and that Disney wouldn't hold a candle to them. . . :rotfl2:

Funny, my inlaws are in Colorado also and we also get along well. We have cuised with them several times (including the TA--14 nights) and once when FiL was on a hunting trip MiL cruised on Princess with us and stayed in the same cabin (back then on Princess you could put 5 in a regular--interior-- cabin if one was under 3 which Rio was). It was a lovely week and I would not mind doing it again. I think very few people get along
that well with their mother's in law! Now, I love my own mother dearly but, well, I couldn't do that with her. In fact my mom arrives here for a 6 night visit tomorrow and I am torn between excitement to see her (she lives in Mexico and we see her every year or so only) and stress about seeing her:rolleyes1

I do get along with my inlaws, but I have the same apprehension when my Mom comes for a visit. She is just so critical and judgemental (sp?)! I never feel I can do, or have done anything right. Doug says we have about a 3 day limit that we can get along. After that - one of us has to leave, so a 7 day cruise would just not work out!

Thanks, we do have an REI by us. I will have to check it out. Are they called something specific so I can look online too?

Right after I read this I ran to get my camera and post a picture of my box, but Drea beat me to it! :lmao: Mine is the thinner version, but says DCL on it. They have the fatter ones on the ship too. In fact they might have them in the gift shop at the port. We never made it in there.

TVEPFOX - Thank you for the tropical update! Once we get through Hanna we will turn our eyes to Ike and hope he decides to turn out to sea!

Megan used A Becka last year in Pre-school, I liked it too! Megan starts Kindergarten tomorrow! I'm going to dig out my Christmas music and have the Staples song going in the car when I drop her off!!! Both kids will be in school! Kindergarten is full day, 5 days a week here! :scared1: Bad for her, but Mamma gets some home alone time!

I'm off to Angel Food! Have a great day everyone!

That is why my MOM is on deck 2 with Shoes99 !!! :rotfl2:

OK have you guys been talking to Kristen and Michelle behind my back:rotfl2: :rotfl2: All Michelle and Kris keep saying is it is a GOOD THING that there are two decks between mom and us:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I know they were doing the happy dance   when Joe and I upgraded to room 8548 (they keep saying it is because it is a suite) but mom knows better since before that we were all on the same floor!!!!

The goal here is obviously to have some simplicity so your autographs and pictures are the focal points. I have yet to make spots for pictures so you write around the frames, but you can get the idea. I used my Cricut for the letters, Donald's tie, Mickey's buttons, and Goofy's hat. Otherwise, it was all my own paper piecing.

I have a couple of other characters I plan to do as well, but OMG it's 2:30 in the morning!!!!

Night Night!
OMG those are adorable... NOTHING CLOSE to what I was planning.. might need to kick it up a notch LMAO:rotfl:

TVEPFOX--thank you for all the weather updates:thumbsup2 I really like all of your summaries of what this information means to us--I am not so good at interpreting the weather data myself:)
I agree Hadley... and the maps are a great touch thanks :thumbsup2

If there is a storm brewing while we're on the ship, I know how to read the weather charts posted in the ship's lobby. I can hold weather class!
Plus we're getting a tour of the bridge, I'll ask the Captain myself!
Sweet Weather Class.. can we work that in around the beer and martini tasting LOL

Have some fun Mommy time!

Thanks :-) What does you hubby do now? See why I have anxiety! lol It's even worse when I listen to the scanner :scared1:

Thanks. We are going to Maui. A week after the cruise.. so it's been crazy planning. Pearl Harbor would be cool.
Tonya

He now.....drum roll please.....drives a ready-mix truck. That's a cement truck in layman's terms. Like I said, at least he doesn't have to put on a bullet-proof vest to go to work....just a hard hat. :rotfl: Ooooo, I didn't listen to the scanner. Too much to stress about there. I was able to go on a ride-along one time. That was pretty neat. It was Christmas night so it was very quiet......& kinda boring truth be told.

HI sounds like so much fun. I agree, Pearl Harbor would be a neat thing to see. My DDad is a WWII buff, so I've seen several programs about it.

And I did mean K-9 as in dog.. crazy.. lol He has been trying to be a k-9 handler and then they just called him for this other task force. He didn't want to pass it up incase K-9 doesn't work out. They should be hiring for it in a couple months.

Oh, good. That's what I thought you meant by K9....but then w/Drea's comment wasn't sure. K9 is a very cool assignment. When DH did it, his partner was home w/us - a very sweet German Shepherd named Rin (as in Rin Tin Tin). Well, he was sweet at home....he knew when it was time to work & shifted into that mode.

cute cute!! Very nice work.

Tropical Storm Hanna is moving at 13 miles per hour. That's fast for a storm. She seems to be moving north. Not really a big story for us cruisers. Let's just write this gal off. :cheer2:

Hey!! Don't write her off just yet. She's set to affect those of us in NC. We need the rain, but can do w/o the winds. We're inland & so won't be affected as much, but we're still projected to get some stuff. I'm picking up water this afternoon. Even if we don't need it for this storm, I'll take it w/us on the cruise. :)

Thanks for all your updates on the weather!!

That's a great relief to many in the Bahamas and southeast coast of US!!! Myrtle Beach won't be happy though.

Aaahhhh, many fond memories of vacationing in MB - every summer when I was a kid in fact.

Woohoo!! Megan's 1st full day! Don't cry. :)

OK Important stuff.

I am making an assumption on Monday our first planned Day at sea there will be several tastings.

FatCat (assuming Mrs. FatCa) gives the go ahead) will be at the tequila/margarita tasting.

You can buy these tickets(last time $15) when you board at guests services.

So that is my plan... All are welcome.

Thanks for the weather updates, hopeing for docs today:woohoo:

Thank you for all the weather updates. I read on the main board that the Sept 1 dd is on its way to the Florida Straits they won't be getting their second CC day thanks to Hanna!!! Glad we are not going until the end of September.

LOL!! I had another woman tell me that this week. I just shook my head. She just doesn't get it.

Hey, Drea - I LOVE your new avi!

Did anybody see New Kids on the Block perform on the Today Show this morning? I DVRed it at home and watched it online! :)

About the MIL and Moms ~ my MIL said I was a sl_t and her son would be sorry he married me on our wedding day! She is probably turning in her grave to know her son has been married to me for 37 years.:woohoo: She once gave me a bottle of red finger nail polish for a Christmas gift.......I bite my nails ......

My Mom ~ 1/2 hour is tops for us on any given week! Everyone else loves me to death.....why not her???? :sad1:

Kimberly ~ Love your pages......

TVEPFOX ~ I check your weather forecasts first thing each morning and last thing each night. Better than the Weather Channel.....

jjgarv ~ where in central PA are you?

Yikes. You sound like you have a mil like mine. My mil had a little thing in her house one day that I was admiring. She said "I bought it for you, but I decided to keep it." Wow. How nice. :sad2: Crazy lady. She thinks her daughter is perfect and that all 3 of her in-laws are dirt. Whatever.:confused3

My Mom ~ 1/2 hour is tops for us on any given week! Everyone else loves me to death.....why not her???? :sad1:

:grouphug: I'm sorry. That stinks. My mom and I fuss sometimes, but we're very close. I wouldn't trade anything for her.

I just got back from 4 days in DL- Paris! I missed so much on this thread - trying to catch up!

Wow, I get along well with my in laws. (maybe it helps we live 2 hours away.) my inlaws are almost my grandmas age, and they are set in their ways, but will do anything for you. ( they took us all on a cruise 3 years ago).

My mom, my kids call her Pammy not grandma. :goodvibes :goodvibes she wants to come with us on our next cruise, she goes to Disney with us every other year or so. I wish we lived closer, it will be really tough once we move to Georgia. :(

Has this question ever been asked yet?? What does your screen name mean? (some are easy to figure it out.) Mine actually had nothing to do with the Disney Magic. someone one time asked if I was done having kids? and my answer...3 is the Magic number for me.

Now to Mr. Ike. He's a hurricane. He could be a problem for CC, he's currently a cat 4! Yikes! He should hit CC around Monday. Then Florida later in the week.:headache:

025413W_sm.gif

Josephine... a go-go. Looks like she's not going to come close to land with her hook. Bermuda might be worried, but not us.

024014W_sm.gif

I will add and keep your fingers crossed, there's nothing out there in the open water after this!:woohoo:

I am totally in love with TVEPFOX and her hurricane updates.....who even needs the silly Weather channel anymore? Or weather.com? Her maps are much easier to find and read and she actually summarizes things in a way that's meaningful........I'm glad that the storm that looks like it might actually be a problem is hitting well before our trip. In my experience traveling to WDW and cruising with DCL during hurricane season....unless it's a HUGE disaster of a storm....both WDW and DCL rebound pretty quickly....so even if a storm is there a week or two before we are.....it shouldn't impair our experience!

Okay…. I would hate for you guys to have to memorize yet another post number. We’ve already retired 577 and 6! So, it looks like I might need to start the new thread tonight and get this Chapter closed! That’s good news, IMO!! Can you believe we went through nearly 250 pages in just 2 months?!! Geez! I’ll let you all know when it’s out there.

Awe…thanks ladies for the compliments on the scrapbook pages! What I did was really quite simple, so anyone could do it (and feel free to make them for you, too!)!!

I still have my transparency sheets cut up to use as well, which I’m thinking will work wonderfully for new friends and CMs to sign (dining companions, stateroom host/hostess, servers, etc.) so I can lay it over their photo. It will travel well around the ship. I also have a set for characters to sign that I’ll drop off at GS.

I think we have a new QUESTION OF THE WEEK!!

…Megan starts Kindergarten tomorrow! I'm going to dig out my Christmas music and have the Staples song going in the car when I drop her off!!! …I'm off to Angel Food! Have a great day everyone!

I bet you’ll still get misty eyed mom! Is she excited?

Angel Food…what a wonderful program that really helps a lot of fraught families and fixed income senior citizens. How nice of you to volunteer your time!

He now.....drum roll please.....drives a ready-mix truck. That's a cement truck in layman's terms. Like I said, at least he doesn't have to put on a bullet-proof vest to go to work....just a hard hat. :rotfl: Woohoo!!

No Kidding!!! Hard hat vs. bullet-proof vest?!!! ABSOLUTELY I would be thrilled he’s going to work in that attire! All of the military and law enforcement spouses who live this life...I salute you, too!

I just got back from 4 days in DL- Paris! I missed so much on this thread - trying to catch up!

I hope you had a great time! Nothing like having just enough time to get home from a vacation, do the laundry, pay the bills, and pack again to head back “home”!

Oh my!! That’s just horrible!! I’m so glad to know that you have a great relationship with the family you created though! Furthermore, I think it’s fabulous that a former DIL and MIL are so close and STILL family!!

OK Important stuff.

A trip to GS to get tickets for at least the Martini Tasting and maybe the Margarita Tasting is indeed on my to-do list once we board. I also want to pick up a walking ship tour pamphlet…shoot. I can’t remember the name of it now.

BTW, sorry I’m going to miss the Palo Ressie Line Party complete with umbrella drinks (well, I’m not sorry that I do not have a reason be there!). Maybe I can be your runner to keep your hand cool with a full-glass as you sweat out the anxiety to get reservations you want!
