Dorian expected to strengthen to Cat 3 Hurricane

Do they add phone support hours for these occasions. I am supposed to arrive noon on the 4th. Thinking of pushing the vacation one day back, just every time I tried to call today life intervened. On hold right now, but they may close at 11 pm tonight.

I get where you are coming from.

Living in South Florida all my life I've been in that cone of death every year at some point.

I've posted at least 4 times today that until late tomorrow afternoon or even Friday try to predict where this thing will hit, when, and how strong is silly.
They still don't have accuracy down pat. I remember Chicago 1967. We got 27 inches of snow flurries. They were predicting that as it was snowing. My advice...don't panic yet, Disney will take care of you.

We were in Disney for 2 weeks at the end of Sept 2016 and were supposed to go to Savannah for 3 days after however Hurricane Matthew had hit. Our Savannah portion was cancelled, for obvious reasons, so my husband decided instead of just staying at Disney we would go to Nashville. We left the Thursday and the hurricane hit on the Friday and I really wish we had stayed at a Disney. We were driving and due to all the evacuations in Savannah and along the coast the drive was horrible. It took over 4 hours just to get from one end of Atlanta to the other. We always go in September and have always been lucky to have a trip the week before or after a hurricane. I go in 2 weeks and honestly completely forgot about hurricane season until Dorian.

We do not need to worry about food scarcity when getting to the grocery stores by WDW (Publix or Walmart) correct? We leave tonight and can always adjust our packing to include additional food.

I don't think it will be an issue but just figured I would ask if anyone had been to the store today or last night.

The grocery stores have had some bare shelves the past couple days, but they are still getting daily shipments. If you have room to bring some food items without it being a big inconvenience, it wouldn’t hurt. Since the storm is now projected to linger over Florida for three days, it’s going to take more food than the typical hurricane to get through it.

I'm so with you. We are scheduled to arrive Sat mid-day. I'm frightened we'll get down there and then be sequestered to our hotel, and pay big bucks to do nothing but watch it rain. But then I also feel like maybe we'll lose a day in the parks, but we'll also have WAY lower crowds and a lot more pixie dust??? What to do, what to do.....

Go there and enjoy the low low crowds. I was there for Irma 2 years ago. They closed the parks down for two days but the low low crowds more than made up for it. One thing I will recommend is get in a Disney hotel that you can move around in. That everything is inside. Not like ssr, all stars etc.
I was at the boardwalk. They had chefs, maids, guest services etc staying in the rooms so that the guests will be taking care of. A Buffett was 15 dollars. It wasn’t the greatest Buffett but it was definitely worth 15 dollars. Go enjoy. The low low crowds thousands will cancel.

You all may laugh , but if I was heading down. I'd be throwing some gallon ziplock bags in my suitcase. If I couldn't find bottle water at the resort, I'd fill the bags ( fla water might taste yucky but it's still drinkable water) and stand them up inside a suitcase or something to keep them standing zipper side up.

I'd also add PB and Jelly, bagels, crackers, tuna in a pouch, breakfast bars, etc. If I had access to microwave (like DVC) I'd add some mac and cheese, but wouldn't count only on foods that could be heated, there could be power loss.

And glow sticks. Of course we always have glow sticks.

Does anyone else have edit posts 6 times because you mean to type one word, but type something totally different???

Bottled water is tough to find (empty shelves for the stores I've been in over the past several days). Canned goods and snacks are being depleted, but I cannot attest to all stores inventories. Peanut butter has been almost empty for days.

Our Governor just gave us an update. Regarding Orlando, it is currently projected to be a Cat 1 when, and if, Dorian makes the turn northward up the spine/peninsula. The turnpike service plaza at Turkey Lake in the Orlando area now has troopers to try and keep folks orderly when getting gas. Folks from the general SE Florida region are starting to come northward.

The stores will be bare. You will not find bottled water or bread. Bring yourself a couple of water bottles with filters, and do as a PP suggested and fill zip locks with water before the storm hits. Prepare to be stuck for a few days.

It's amazing to me the run on grocery stores during emergencies like this .. I still have canned goods leftover from Hurricane Florence. People buy enough food to last them weeks in appears. Most people don't drink (or use for cooking) that much water on a normal day, yet now people feel the need to have like 5 cases of it?

I would suggest getting some canned chicken or tuna (that doesn't need refrigeration) and vegetables that do find without refrigeration (like carrots).

Unless it is a MAJOR disaster in the Orlando area (unlikely due to how inland it is) .. you may need supplies for 2-3 days .. tops. Having stuck around for Florence, I found it amazing how quickly a town can get back up and running after a disaster. Being around Disney probably helps as they will be pretty well stocked.

Stay safe!

NWS is now saying 80%-90% chance that Orlando will experience at least Tropical Storm force winds in the next 5 days. Research has indicated that in recent years, when the NWS predicts a hurricane or tropical storm will hit an area 80% of the time, it hits that area 80% of the time.

This is not a drill guys.

Really it's suggested you prepare for about a week for no power, running water, and grocery stores to be empty, but for the most part. IME (a LOT of hurricanes since 1982) things are usually back to relative normal in about 3 or 4 days.

Usually.

After Wilma in 2005 we were without power for 10 days, our water was running but on a boil notice, and FEMA was handing out MRE's and water since no stores had power yet.

After Irma we had power back in 3 days and the water was good all the way through.

True for the most part.

It's good to get what you need but people go freaking bonkers. Right now down here, every gas station has a line around the block with about half of them saying they have no more fuel.

My wife went to Publix and there was next to nothing on the shelves.

Oh it's gonna be ugly for sure.

It's just a matter of how ugly, where, when, and for how long at this point.

But.....

We just went to the Publix by Disney springs and it wasn’t crowded and they were fully stocked with water/bread milk etc...

I may have just hit it at the perfect time. I was expecting the worst and it was totally fine.

I was in the process of buying a house in the Orlando area back in 04 that happened to be after Charley and Francis but before Jeanne. Orlando and locations heading to the east coast were hit pretty hard. The thing that struck me was the amount of blue tarp roofs, partially destroyed houses and downed trees I saw out of MCO heading up into Deltona. Lots of damage outside the airport along SR436.

Take this seriously, a hurricane is no joke. (putting on my public safety hat now)

If you are deciding whether to go or not go, please consider the cast members in your decision. I worked in a hospital system during a hurricane. We dedicated ourselves to our patients and facility a full week before and after the storm. Thats what it took and that’s the choice healthcare members make, willingly. It was still very difficult. While working, we were worried about my own families and homes. Getting ready for work was harder because of the lack of electricity. Getting to work was harder because most gas stations didn’t have generators or ran out of gas from all the people buying it for generators. I wouldn’t wish that stress on anyone but I would do it again will because the best place for our patients was in the hospital. They didn’t have another choice. You do.
