Dopey’s Mum
DAY ONE
To give you a bit of additional background, we were due to go to DLP in May, and on the exact same day we were due to set off, I get cellulitus in my leg and have to spend the next 7 days having IV anti biotics in hospital! So this trip is long overdue!
We climb into our cab, bleary eyed, at 6.45 AM and we manage to catch the 7.09 train to ST Pancras International which takes forever. I have decided I could never commute. These weary travellers are on their way to the 9 to 5 grind, whilst we have the fortune of escaping to Mickey’s Kingdom for a much needed break. Mum cannot walk too well but she has the aid of a crutch I managed to get her off Ebay (£4-a snip!) We go through security/Passport control very quickly and we are soon eating our traditional sausage baguettes and quaffing our hot chocolates and wondering why people are stupid enough to take all their cases into a WH Smiths the size of a postage stamp, preventing me from seeing all the magazines!!
Euro star sets off at 9.53, and I manage to sleep most of the way-a blessing and also a gift surrounded by excitable kiddiewinks! Mum counts the tunnels-until we reach the big one and we move to a window seat once people disembark at Lille. Receive that oddly comforting ‘Welcome to France’ text on my mobile, realising we are a short time away from DLP
Climb into our bendy Disney bus to the Hotel Cheyenne. We have only ever stayed at Santa Fe, and I am happy that Cheyenne has a lot more going for it in design terms. All the buildings are named after famous Western characters and are nicely laid out creating the atmosphere of a genuine Western town. We can’t book in until 3PM so drop our cases off and hit Disney Village. I have promised to not overspend this trip-but I am a Stitch fan and I HAVE to have the Pumpkin Stitch and Yoda Stitch!!! I would not rest until they had been added to my worryingly large Stitch plush collection. After we have a good look around the shops, we catch bus back to the hotel.
Our block is Soaring Eagle and it’s the first time Mum has tried a bunk bed!! Grumpy and I are far too heavy for the bunks, and we would have preferred 2 double beds, but that wasn’t an option. We have a bit of a rest and catch bus back to Disneyland Park. It’s getting on a bit now so we arrive just in time for the fantastic Share A Dream Come True Parade, introducing Princess Tiana. DLP are in the middle of their ‘New Generation’ festival and are promoting the newer Disney characters like Princess and the Frog and Ratatouille, along with the Pixar characters. Get some great shots of Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy who lead the parade (as you would expect) Mum is beaming away and it’s the perfect way to kick off our trip. Take a photo of the huge pumpkin on top of the bandstand-angle it so I get the castle in the background!
We are about to leave, as the park is supposed to close at 6, but we notice a crowd gathering around the castle-I am so glad we stayed as Showtime Spectacular is one of the best things I have seen at DLP (or Disneyworld for that matter) Mickey dances with some of his new friends-seeing him as a member of the Incredibles was hilarious! Take loads of photos, which I will put up here when I get the chance. It’s also my first chance to see Stitch in the flesh (or fur) along with Buzz and Woody, Remy, Tic and Tac (Chip & Dale) and other characters-it really is amazing and a total highpoint of the trip.
We are delighted when we walk into Planet Hollywood and straight to a table without queuing! We also have a book, which shaves 20% off our total bill. So as much as I love character meals, Café Mickey didn’t get a visit from us this time around. I have a Turkey club sarnie with mash and am a bit miffed the photographer doesn’t visit us to take our photo. We get some ice cream in the Village, then walk back to the hotel. A guy is singing in the bar and he’s very good, but people are ignoring him and chatting away, which annoys Grumpy so we head back to room and soon fall asleep.
