Door Magnet Question

To celebrate my Air Force retirement next year we are surprising our kids with a 7-day trip on the Fantasy with another week at Disney. I started seeing all the posts with the designs for door magnets and decided that was how I would let the kids know about the trip...would be difficult to get DD and DS to pack for 2 weeks without them knowing about the trip at some point!

How does everyone get the magnet designs to a finished product? I was looking at using some laser jet magnet paper, but I read some bad reviews about how the finished products turned out and wanted to see what other options were out there.

Your milage may vary, but I used VistaPrint to create what they called "postcard magnets" Start with a high resolution image and your will get an excellent result. They also have "car magnets" of various sizes. I found the postcard size easy to cut with standard scissors so if you wanted to print your image on the rectangle then cut around it for a custom shape, that's absolutely possible.

Drawback: if you do the post card size magnets, you have to order in lots of 10. Still affordable-- you just have extra, so not a big deal. I made a blank Disney cruise line name tag and just used sharpie to write all our names on them.

So I have no creative abilities whatsoever and so I ordered mine off of Etsy. I wish I could make them because I would not mind having a few more, but this is the first year for me to do a door magnet. The fourth cruise is the charm!

We printed ours on magnetic sheets from Staples on an inkjet and they came out great! I also have some from Shutterfly that were photos, but for the room number porthole "ears" I used the inkjet. I also printed some Mickey ears with each of our names with the inkjet.

Can I ask what program you used to print? Or do you just print a picture? I'm looking to make the mickey head magnet..how do you cut it out from the magnet sheets?

I printed them on thick photo paper and then attached them to magnetic roll. This also allowed me to convert some character stickers to magnets as well. We were very happy with the final products.

We print on thicker paper, take it to kinkos to laminate them. Then we cut them out and stick self adhering magnets to the back (we use the ones from a sheet not a roll).

I had all of my DISigns printed at Staples and then I cut them out and laminated them (I bought one because they are actually cheap)...then I used rare earch magnets to glue them on the back.

The Wonder and Magic's door paint is so thick that the other types of magnets slide right off. This proved to be true because the few magnets we got as FE gifts slid right off.

Laminating might be a good work around to get the glossy look that I want without using photo paper. Love my laser jet, but am missing being able to print on easily available papers

Lamination also helps with regards to it getting accidentally folded or torn as well. It is sturdy.

I print my pictures on photo paper, cut them out and then place them on the sticky magnetic sheets I get at Michael's, and cut them out again from that. I found that cutting them out first, before putting them on the magnetic sheet, saves wasting a lot of magnet materiel. I don't laminate my magnets, since the photo paper is glossy.

I print them out on photo quality paper and then use magnetic tape on them. You can have them printed at your local photo shop

I printed mine on photo paper on a colour inkjet printer. Then used magnetic business card backings from staples to give them magnets. Worked very well on the cruise.

In addition to the OP's question, what size do you recommend printing the images? Should I print 2 Mickey Heads per sheet, for example? Or do most print 1 Mickey head per sheet?

Are you asking about the random blank Mickey heads? Mine are about 2" across (maybe 2 1/2"), I can get several on a sheet. But you certainly can print them any size you wish.

We also print our on card stock paper and attach them to a magnetic roll.
