Ugg been checking for months and was holding off on buying tickets for the autotrain. Just went on tonight and the jumped almost $200 since the weekend that I didn't buy them earlier. We are not going until August. Now it looks like we will be driving.

So if you are thinking about dont wait to long.

I'm not sure how the tickets for the Auto Train work, but I know regular train tickets are ALWAYS cheaper the earlier you buy them, and also 100% refundable as long as the ticket itself hasn't been printed.

I book reservations for my daughter to take the train home from school during break periods very early to lock in the lowest cost. Its true I have to pay for the ticket at the time of the reservation, but as long as I don't print it I can cancel the reservation at any time for a full refund. The ticket doesn't need to be printed until she arrives at the station for the train, so in reality right up until the last day it can be canceled without penalty.

Once we have it booked, I start searching for airfare within our budget. If we can find it low enough, I book the plane ticket and cancel the train, using the credit on the train to 'pay' for the airfare.

This ensures I've locked the lowest price on the train and can still look for affordable airfare.

Lowest reates for the Autotrain are available 11 months in advance. They just go up from there as each fare tier sells out. The reservation is fully refundable unless you are a no-show at the station. Sorry this happened to you
