Don't Try This At Home!

OMG girls....WOW...that photo is amazing!!!. What a bunch of old fuddy duddies on here...lol I mean come on you were young once , dont tell me you didnt do anything a little riske..think of the memories those kids will have when they get older having that photo to show their kids. I for one LOVE it..if I saw them do it I would give them a round of applause. Lifes too short...heck I wish I could do something like that!!!! Life is full of risks, what do you want them to do, walk about wrapped in a blanket??? they are young and should enjoy life..I think that picture is awesome...GO GIRLS!!!:cheer2:

Yes, they should enjoy life. However, not in such a public and crowded place. I am not a fuddy duddy but I am 51 years old and have done lots of stupid things in my life. And one of them led to my neck being broken, as I have said. Yes, I was living life large that evening, rolled my car and guess what? Been paying for it now for the past six years. Thousands of dollars of medical bills and my life changed forever. Do I take risks? Yes, I still do but they are limited. Don't talk it unless you've walked it.

They would not do something to hurt themselves.

 None of the cheerleaders who've had catastrophic injuries thought they were doing something that would get them clobbered. Believing "I won't get hurt" has nothing to do with someone's odds of injury.

For that matter, those who argue "they're legal adults, don't worry about it" are on no better grounds. College-aged cheerleaders have more injuries than younger and more monitored groups, and five times the catastrophic injuries of high school cheerleaders, so being technical adults isn't an excuse, either.

USASF has one of the better cheerleading safety records, partly because of their rule structure, and what these cheerleaders were doing is against USASF rules. I don't think the cheerleaders should have been thrown out of the park, but they were doing something stupid and it's reasonable to say so. There will always be people who enjoy taking physical risks and think that's fun, but if they do that sort of thing in public, they should expect to be called on it.

It was interesting to wake up on a Sunday and find this thread. I am a member of the rules committee for a national cheeleading safety organization. I've been coaching cheer at all levels (including college and semi-pro stunt teams) for 27 years.

Since we seem to feel (based on the OA on the tops) that this might be the Orlando All-Stars, they fall subject to the USASF rules. From the "general safety" section of the USASF rules:

5. Athletes must always practice and perform on an appropriate surface. Technical skills (stunts, pyramids, tosses or tumbling) may not be performed on concrete, asphalt, wet or uneven surfaces or surfaces with obstructions.

Seems to me that closes the subject.

Thanks for posting!! This is the rule I was speaking g of, but couldn't find the link.

A good coach would look at this picture and tell any student involved in that stunt, "There is a line between courage and stupidity, and you just crossed it."

But what amuses me about that photo, especially in light of the crotch comments, is that I hadn't noticed before that Hanes sponsors the R'n'R. :teeth:
Exactly!

There have been several of us on here, including a senior member of the safety committee of the sport point out just how insanely dangerous what they are doing is. It is so dangerous that their program could be held responsible for their poor choice. They are violating a major safety rule while representing their program at the biggest competition in the nation.

You do realize that if that top girl falls and it goes bad she could be killed or paralyzed right? Stunts like this fall all the time. We have had concussions, broken noses, broken ribs, ACL tears, and various sprain statins ect at our gm this year when doing this on an appropriate padded sping floor. all our coaches are credentialed and grils properly trsted for level appropiate skills. no one is perfect, falls happen. There is some inherent danger in this sport just like any other. Would you encourage an elite gymnast to perfor her bar routine over concrete because it would make a cool photo? After all they know what they are doing and won't fall, right? this is the same level of injury risk. Stunting on concrete is a STUPID thing to risk.

If it had a photo of me doing something this stupid and risky the only reason I would show it to my kid would be as a warning. She is only 9, but knows her coaches and her parents would be irate if she and her teammates or any other team at the gym pulled something like this.

Lol. Yep. We are old giddy daddies. Except I'm 26 and while I don't follow the rules always, I do t do things that will get me hurt. You know what else makes awesome photos!? The ones Adam the Woo took when he went backstage! Those are gonna be awesome to show his kids before he goes on a trip to Disney. Oh wait. He can't because he got banned. There is a reason people aren't allow backstage, they can get hurt dive they don't know the area. Like multiple other people have said, what if one of them got hurt? What will you have said? Live while your young? Please. Everyone has their own opinion and I can respect that. But when someone wants to give theirs and bash others, that's what irritates me about a message board.

I agree with everyone saying it's dangerous and they should never have done that. It doesn't matter how professional they are, it's still on concrete and they could have seriously injured themselves. But it's also risky if kids/teens sees what they're up to and decides to try similar stunts themselves. Peoples safety is something that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Stupid is as stupid does....

Put safety aside... it's just not the place for that kind of thing. Would you take that picture in a grocery store? In the mall? At a doctor's office? Of course not. It's disruptive and obnoxious. It seems more and more that these types of groups go into the park thinking it's all about them and behave as such.

A stupid, inappropriate, self-centered stunt. Really dumb.

I couldn't agree more.

This may be a stunt these young women have done with each other hundreds of time and some may consider them "professionals" in the field of cheerleader. IMHO, though, a true professional would have recognized that doing the stunt in the location was not appropriate. All it would take is a young child, that got away from their parents and wasn't watching where they were running, to bump into them and the girl to come crashing down on concrete.

Oh, I'm sure they are.

But is it safe? Is there any safety gear? Any spotters?

Looks pretty darn dangerous to me. But Disney clearly has approved it and the dude is a mature adult with obviously a ton of experience doing it. Not so with the kiddos.

I get your point, don't get me wrong. I thought of this exact same example earlier but chose not to go there. :goodvibes

As old as Aerosmith is, it should be Depends.

On a side note. My 4 year old started tumbling class at the local cheer gym. I've noticed that there are three types of parents.

1) The fathers (like me). . .we try not to pay too much attention, either because we don't want to look like pervs, or (at least in my case), we don't want to actually see our young children get hurt doing something we know is dangerous in the best of cases.

2) The mothers who just socialize, they chat with each other, share recipes and do basically whatever it is that mothers do (being a father, I can't speak for you)

3) The CHEER mothers. These are the crazy parents who are yelling, and WAY too involved in their child's extracurricular activities. Ther was one girl at the gym wearing the same type of elbow brace I've seen sidelined NFL players wearing. When she told her mother that hand springs seemed to be hurting her elbow, the mother ratcheted up the brace and sent her back out there.

I've seen type three on all sorts of fields, being an athletic youth myself. These tend to be the ones that need to be removed from the facility.

Not really making a point. . .just sayin'.

Cool picture, but shouldn't have happened for the posted reasons by those who actually DO know what they are talking about.
