Don't laugh - but how many bags should we check?

First trip ever with DS4. Doing 3 nights on property. Now, I know that this sounds silly, but how many bags? I CAN squeeze everything into one suitcase and a carryon backpack, but is this wise? Should I check 2 bags to give room to bring things back. I have no idea of what types of things we'd bring back though.

Hi!

Being the worry-wart that I am, I always check at least two bags - even if they're both just half-full. I then make sure I split our clothes evenly between the two bags - that way if one bag is "lost" or "delayed", I'll have one suitcase that will have some clothes for each of us. (yes, I have had experience with lost luggage - lesson learned!)
