I am very computer challenged, so please bear with me.

My DH bought a laptop about a year and a half ago, and he also had Windows 7 (I think it said "Home and Student" also?) installed there at the store (CompUSA.) My DD can no longer access power point, word, etc. I cannot find the product key it is asking for. I have the receipt...is there a number at Microsoft that I can call and they can give me a new one? If so, what is the phone number? I have tried a few and I get lost in the voice prompting.

I may not be able to get back to the computer until later tonight, so thanks in advance for any help you can provide! I will check in later!

If you can't get through to them and you really need to use the office suite products you can download Open Office for free and it is the same suite of products as MS office, there is a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software etc. & you can open MS Office docs in Open Office and visa versa. It is great and what I use for my husband's business.

To use it, just install and run the program. Click on ‘Find Windows 7 Product Key’ button. You can then copy the key and save it somewhere.

just google Windows 7 Key Finder its a free prg.. and easy to use.

Did you peel the sticker off the bottom of the laptop with the product key?

Mine is on the bottom of my laptop. Also, there is a sticker on the side of my desktop tower for the Windows system that my desktop runs.

ETA: Nevermind, ignore my post, as others have clarified you need the product key for Office, which should be with the software when you bought it. However, if you ever need the Windows product key, it is placed on the laptop/CPU itself.

Are you looking for the product key for Microsoft Office or Windows 7. They are 2 different things. The MS Office is where you get Word, Powerpoint, Excel and such, Windows 7 is the actually operating system.

It sounds like you need to product key for MS Office. When Comp USA downloaded it they should have given you the paperwork/box with the product key on it. It won't be on the register receipt. I don't believe there is anywhere you can get the key and I can't imagine them just giving you a new product key.

You can also try that Open Office that a PP suggested or you can try restoring your computer to an earlier time to see if MS Office comes back up.

I think you're referring to MS Office, not Windows 7 as Windows 7 has no Home and Student edition (Windows 7 editions - Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate).

You will need the original key from inside the software package that you purchased (it should have been given to you, even if someone else installed it). I personally do not think moving to OpenOffice is a good solution as others have mentioned. If you have a valid license key that you purchased you shouldn't have to use something else.

How long ago did these programs stop working? Is it recent, in the last day or two? She might just be able to do a System Restore, to last week. System Restore corrects almost everything! It is my FIRST "go to" when fixing anything on the computer. :surfweb:

Thank you everyone! I am copying and pasting this in an email for my DH to see in the morning! I soooo appreciate all the help.
