Just thought I would throw this out as an FYI to all those out there that ever wondered how things work.

A friend of mine just called all excited about an email he got read on.

I’m sure by now hundreds of you have gotten those emails claiming that you can block pay per views on your digital cable box. They claim to sell a filter that will block the cable company’s access to the cable box and let you order as many pay per view movies as you would care to purchase all for free!!! WOW… The filter goes from about $50 to $150.00. First shock of the day the filter is worth about $7.00.

They claim its legal because the filter sits inside your house and once the cable enters your house it’s yours to do with what you will. That statement is in most cases true, and also true the filter will not interfere with reception, the local guide or operation of your box. You can in fact order PPV movies and events all without the knowledge of the local cable company, and never be charged a dime.

BUT!!!! You knew there had to be a but doesn’t there always. Here is what happens… The filter blocks the return path to the cable company’s computer, you see the box on top of your TV sends signal to the cable company just to let them know everything is just ducky, or to inform them that you just made a PPV purchase, in some areas it sends back information as to what your watching if you signed a special form okaying this for research used in say the Nielson ratings that is. (relax big brother is not watching… yet)

If you block this information with a filter your digital box will start to store the PPV purchase information, and after it hits a certain purchase limit it will shut down, plus the cable company’s computer will tag your box as non respondent since it can not see it anymore and no information is coming from your residence. Then you will get a visit by your local cable company service person. They will remove the filter, which of course you will claim not to have any idea how it got there, and then the box will download all that purchase information. Now you will have to explain to you spouse how all those naughty movies got on your bill.

Don’t get spammed kids if its too good to be true, its not. Stay legal and honest and in the morning you’ll feel better about yourself.

Disclaimer: I'm not in anyway shape or form implying that anybody here would ever even think of trying such a thing :p
