First off, I love VMK and have been playing since January 2006. It has been a way to connect with virtual friends and enjoy the Disney parks when I cannot be in them. I am very sad that it is closing, but then again we have all said we knew it would happen sooner or later. I would love for VMK to stay open, but reaslistically that probably will not happen.
My first thoughts when I heard about the closing was of all the wonderful memories I have. I then decided that I was going to make the most of my last few weeks with VMK and just enjoy being in the kingdom, but sadly I am not enjoying VMK anymore due to the fact that in EVERY public room people are complaining, protesting, campaigning, etc... about this matter. I wish VMK would be like it always was for these last few weeks so when I log on, I could still escape to the virtual world and get away from reality for just a little bit. I want to be happy in VMK and now it just makes me sad and I'm now on the verge of getting annoyed.
I do not blame anyone for fighting to keep VMK open, but it is starting to get out of hand. What will contacting CNN do? Maybe they will run a story, but what will it do? If you only make Disney mad, then they will definitely not change their minds! What about all the millions of people who watch CNN? What are they going to think? Probably something along the lines of why are people so worried about a game with everything else that is going on in our world. Face it, VMK players are only a very, very small minority in this world. I understand that it is a good game for kids to play, but people who do not know VMK will think...then again is it good for kids to sit at a computer for hours instead of spending real time with family? The true reason that most of us want VMK to stay open is not for the kids, though, it is for ourselves because we love it so much.
Everyone is now looking for someone to blame. People are blaming Iger, Roy Disney, anyone they can think of that is high up in the company, but face it they probably did not make the decision to close VMK. In fact, many of the higher ups probably have never even heard of VMK. There are Presidents of all the different areas of Disney that make those decisions. Disney DOES care for its consumers, that's why they keep the parks and resorts so nice and have all of the Cast Members make sure to cater to the needs of every single guest and that is why they created this free game for us in the first place. We should be happy that we even had VMK, let alone for this long. Blame who you want, but Iger is not ruining Disney. Read the book Disneywar if you want to know the true innerworkings of this company and you really want to know about all of the higher ups. You will have a completely different viewpoint when you are done, I promise you.
Fight for VMK, but enjoy these last few weeks too. Be realsitic with who you decide to contact too. If you do not want to give up, then don't, but don't get your hopes up either. Don't let this get anymore out of hand either because seriously it is starting to go too far. Look around...it's like the VMK and the VMK boards have gone wild.
