I don't think anyone is wishing Delswife or Nikki ill. I don't think anyone is saying she deserved to get so sick because she doesn't have insurance. I think people are just really concerned because not getting health insurance is akin to borrowing trouble and don't want them to have to go through this horrible experience again.

I am so sorry:( It is awful watching your own child when they are so sick. I hate the health insurance system in our country. I hope she gets better soon.

Well, I certainly don't think this calls for debate about health insurance and personally I think its pretty darn rude to insinuate she's being negligant because she doesn't have any. Poor thing is going through a hard enough time dealing with what happened and all some of you can do is give her a hard time! Shame on you!!!!! $600 a month is an awful lot to some people, maybe not to you, but I can certainly understand where she is coming from.
I was thinking the same exact thing a couple of pages back. No one here, including myself, knows Robin's situation as well as she does. I've seen too many of her posts here, ones where you can see the love she has for her family, to second guess her. If she doesn't have insurance, I'm going to assume she has a darn good reason for it. And as for how she manages to go to WDW... That's her business, not ours, and it's pretty darn tacky to throw that at her when she's worried enough about her sick daughter.

Robin, don't let them get you down. Hope Nikki feels better soon :D

Wow, I hope Nikki feels well enough for graduation. She deserves her day! :teeth:

Robin, I will be praying for healing for Nikki. God bless you guys!

I think I would write a detailed letter to the first hospital just to scare the pants off of them and maybe keep it happening from someone else. I'm glad your DD was treated and is feeling better. Something similar happened when I was 9 months pregnant and my DH had a high fever and was delirious. They stuck us in the waiting room and treated us like crap, all the nurse was concerned about was yelling at me because my toddler was up at midnight and crying his head off. We ended up leaving, I was hysterical and had been throwing up all day myself. The next day my DH was much better, we got him treated and my Mom went to the hospital and ripped the administrator up one wall and down the other. She said the woman never stopped pacing up and down her office the entire time she was there. I would let them know and not in a nice way.

Robin,

I am so glad Nikki is finally doing better, Do you think you may also have mono you have been sick and isn't Mono contagious?

Hoping everyone is feeling better soon.

I hope that you take those test results and throw them in the face of every ER Doc and hopital admin at SMMC. Then tell them you'll sue them all for malpractice and anything else you can think of!!!!! Of Course this is after Nikki is better give her hugs and yourself one too. Please take care and keep us updated.

I totally agree!!! Let those doctors know what they did was WRONG!! How many other people do they mis-diagnose??? GRRR, that just makes my blood boil! No insurance, SO WHAT, it's their responsibility to TREAT everyone!!! did they forget their oath???????

Oh My I am sorry she was treated so horribly. Tell her to rest and I hope she is feeling better soon.

If you can afford to take trips to WDW, then you can afford health insurance. Yes health insurance is a lot of money. Believe me, I know. I've not been on any sort of vacation in several years because I can't afford it. I do have health insurance, though.

what if something happened to the rich relatives and the credit cards weren't available? What if you got into a horrible accident or got a disease that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to treat?

i agree -- this isn't a debate, it's genuine concern. the first doctor did a minimal exam because Nikki didn't have insurance. if Robin hadn't taken Nikki to another ER, who knows what could have happened? scary, isn't it? $600 for insurance, or your daughter's life?

I pay a lot more for my children's medical insurance. I certainly wouldn't want some doctor to turn me away or do only the minimum that was required because i didn't have a little card with an insurer's name on it.

Well, if I wasn’t feeling bad enough…..

How can I argue any of this? I read the link from mudnuri about the laws in Maine. The guidelines are $17,964/yr for an individual. Nikki is 18 and legally an adult (does this still make me a negligent parent?) and her income is well below this total.

I still feel that she should have received the same treatment as someone that has insurance. I believe she has that right as a human being. I feel that she was ignored.

Why not at the very least give her something to reduce her fever? 103 degrees is dangerous.

If strep throat and mono are so closely related, why not take at least a throat culture? Guessing at what was wrong with her only resulted in another visit to the ER.

If strep throat and mono are so closely related, why give her an antibiotic that makes her condition worse? (She did have hives, I forgot to say that, sorry)

He took the time to look in her ears and throat, why didn’t he feel her abdomen for swelling?

I don’t feel my anger is misplaced. But thank you for pointing out to me that I am a failure at providing for my child. I will say a prayer that you never lose your professional job or have to dip into your transplant trust fund.

And trust me, if I ever thought for one second that spending $600 a month would mean the difference in my daughters life and death, I would have found a way to pay it. I pay our doctors bills at the time of the visit. I would pay the hospital bill. I never would have believed that because she doesn’t have insurance she wasn’t entitled to the same care as anyone else.

Believe me, lesson learned okay? I am looking at health insurance for her. I am doing the best I can. Before this I never realized how badly I needed it. That she wouldn’t qualify for the same care as anyone else because of a card.

Luckily for most of you, you will never have to learn this lesson. If someone had ever said to me, “Pay us $600 a month or your kid will die.” I would have listened. Most people I know don’t have insurance. 254,000 Mainers went without health insurance at some point in 2001-2002.

I did get my feelings hurt in this thread, however I also did learn a lot from this thread.

~Thank you all for you hugs prayers and advice.

hope nikki is feeling better...thats gotta be awful for the both of you going through all the hospital junk...it gets frustrating!! hopefully now that they know what it is , she will start to feel better!

and congrats on her graduation-hope she feels good for it-the ceremony goes by so quick when you are in it--i just did it last year :)

Can't even post a legitimate gripe on the DIS anymore without someone getting on their high horse and criticizing a mother that we all know cares so much about her daughter. She comes to the DIS for support and to just gripe and all some can do is tell her everything she did wrong. Welcome to the new DIS. And I still wonder why I don't post like I used too.

Glad Nikki is doing better. Tell her I said hi again and congrats on graduation!

Wow Robin, guess I better go back and read the posts from page one to now.

First, you are so right. I am a nurse and see it all the time. Even in my own family we have people who work, get no benefits, and can't afford to pay for insurance for themselves. I think this is criminal but....we are planning to explore Mars for Heaven's sake.

National Healthcare. Folks, we need this. We need a means of people getting affordable healthcare for EVERYONE. I work at a county hospital. If you sit on your butt and have no job, we can help you. If you have private insurance, we can help you. If you work but can't afford or don't have insurance, well, we can help you make payments for many, many years or we can help destroy your credit.

Now, I will hop off my soapbox...DARN, twisted my ankle. Guess I will have to go to ED and pay my $75.00 copay and 20% of my remaining ballance, unless I get admitted. ::yes::

Edited to add: I work part time but DH "gets" insurance through his employer. They take out nearly $300.00 a month for our "benefit". It was changed from a really good HMO to Anthem. So far they haven't paid hardly anything this year as of June.

Also. to the poster who thoughtfully encluded all of the details of Maine's subsidized health care. You need to read it better. It covers children UNDER 18 or pregnant women. We also have it in Ohio and it's called Healthy Start. I'm afraid it wouldn't have helped here.

 Robin, and Nikki! Hope you're both feeling better very soon!

You are certainly not the only individual/family/parent walking around without insurance tho. There are obviously sooooo many others out there in the same situation or there wouldn't be those laws, and supposed 'protections', for noninsured individuals. If the 1st hospital was private, they should have referred Nikki to the public hospital, at the very least, imo.

And, personally, as an individual/family/parent, I have seen our own BCBS coverage drop over the past several years, while the price we pay and the deductibles keep going up. I'm not blaming BCBS either, this is happening because the employer is choosing cheaper and cheaper premiums for THEMSELVES, while WE are paying more each visit/each year, and getting less and less coverage. :(

So, in short, even some of the best insurance carriers can provide the minimum in insurance and, you end up paying more and more each year. :(

In case I'm being misunderstood in any way, this is a POSITIVE post for Robin and her family. :sunny:
