Don't buy your computer from Best Buy! (vent)

There is a whole website that talks about all the problems with Best Buy. I would post the name but it would probably be censored, if that gives you any indication of what it is. Apparently this is not an isolated incident with them.

My cousin bought a computer there and they talked her into taking the display because they said there shipment would be a few weeks to wait for one still in the box. They assurred her it was a display--never used, etc.....
Well, the first problem was the monitor, it changed colors as soon as they got it home. Next the previous owners info and email started coming in. Needless to say it was a disaster.

I'm not a fan of Best Buy no matter what you buy there. You can't return anything there 30 days or more after the initial purchase even with a receipt. ??

I've purchased my last two computers from Dell. No complaints either (which is a far cry from the Gateway computer that I purchased years ago and for which I literally spent HOURS on the phone trying to get the thing to work).

Not pointing fingers at anyone here, but after 15 years in the PC repair business, rarely is there such a thing as a "bad" computer. All make PC's suffer parts failures of some form or another. Most PC makers just put together parts from other makers ie hard drives from Western Digital, motherboards from Gigabyte (yes Dell, Gateway etc. all do it) so no matter who you buy from you're getting similar stuff inside (depending upon model and price, I'm not saying you'll find the same components in a $3000 Dell as a $500 E-Machine, but A $500 Dell and a $500 E-Machine might have identical components other than case). You're not going to like me for this but most computer problems I've found are user related (no, or not updates antivrus, deleting things that are needed etc..). I have an uncle who has bought every major brand name of PC's in the last 7 years and he has had no luck with any of them. I take his PC, fix it up and run it for a week with no problems, he get's it back and within 8 hours he has problems again.

I've bought two top of the line computers at BB (Compaq laptop & Sony desktop) and haven't had any troubles at all. It does sound like it's that model so I'd steer clear of it.

If you decide to shop elsewhere, I'd look into Dell. Great customer service and a good product!

IMHO I think Dell is the best you can purchase. I have several E-machines and others before my Dell and has multiple problems and just not lasting very long. If you buy a top of the line to start off with, you will be very happy. As a general rule, Dell has great service and replacements are not a problem with them at all

Our first computer was a Gateway. I don't remember too many problems out of it. Since then we've purchased two Dell desktops and a Dell laptop. All have been great. I would definitely recommend a Dell.

DH bought an ~$1200 HP at BB that didn't work out of the box and couldn't get it to work even contacting HP. Returned for another of the same model that also didn't work. Finally found a Sony V that had been left forgotten in the lockup (no display model anymore) and way marked down. So a 1600 Laptop for 800.
He is Very happy with it and thinks the hassle of the first were worth it because of getting this one at a great price.

We got DS's college computer built at a small local mom and pop computer shop. You can custom order what you want and the prices are very competitive. For our home computers, DH builds them. He buys are the parts and the case and builds it. He didn't build DS's computer because if something went wrong, he didn't want to be blamed! He has upgraded it a couple of times but that's it. Of course, if something goes wrong here at home, I just holler to tech support in the living room!

Well, we went to COMP USA today and found a very helpful salesperson. We ended up with a Sony VIAO. Thanks to those who recommended it. We love it so far. None of the problems we experienced with the HP or Best Buy.

Snowysmom, How lucky you are to have your own tech person. :goodvibes DH is OK with computers, but I don't think he could build his own.

We have bought 2 desktops and one laptop from Dell and have been very happy with everything. No complaints here.
